신라의 벽화고분과 화상석묘 존재 가능성 고찰 - 신문왕릉과 황복사지 위치비정을 중심으로 - (An Examination of a Possibility of the Presence of the Tombs of Mural and Pictorial Stone in Unified Silla -Focused on the Determination of the Geographic Location of the Tomb of King Sinmun and Hwang)

초록

본 논문은 신라의 수도 경주에도 벽화 고분과 畵像石을 가진 횡혈식 석실분이 축조되었을 가능성이 높다는 것에 대해서 역사 및 고고학 자료를 토대로 검토한 것이다. 경주 남산 서록의 삼릉에 있는 傳 神德王陵은 벽화고분과 일제 강점기 경주 충효리 석실분에서 검출된 龍紋 石柱는 이러한 추정을 뒷받침하는 좋은 고고학 자료임을 부각시켰다. 특히 16세기말 홍성민이 작성한 ≪계림록≫에 해와 달이 새겨져 있던 석실분을 실견하였다는 내용을 소개하였다. 통일신라 화상석묘의 축조를 구체적으로 시사하는 이 역사자료를 제시하여 본고에서 주장된 내용을 뒷받침하고자 하였다. 아울러 경주 구황동 소재 전 황복사지 3층 석탑에서 검출된 청동제 사리함 뚜껑에 있는 명문 내용, 이 사지 인근에서 지표 채집된 ‘皇福’과 ‘王福’의 명문이 새겨진 와편, 1968년 발굴조사에서 확인된 12지신 상의 일부, 그리고 ≪삼국사기≫ 신라본기의 신문왕 葬地와 관련된 기사를 종합하여 검토할 때 이 사찰은 ‘황복사’로, 그 동편에 있는 원형의 석렬 유구는 신문왕릉으로 비정하는 것이 합리적이라는 견해를 제시하였다.

영어초록

This paper argues that horizontal tombs that have mural paintings and pictorial stone may have been constructed in Gyeongju, the capital of Silla Kingdom, during the Unified Silla period. In order to justify this argument, a few archaeological examples and historical documents were utilized. In particular, the putative tomb of King Sindeok, located in the western part of South Mountain in Gyeongju was briefly introduced. Because it turned out to be mural according to the investigations conducted by both Japanese and Korean archaeologists respectively in the past. In addition, one horizontal tomb excavated by a Japanese archaeologist during Japanese colonial period in Choonghyo-dong, Gyeongju, was also briefly mentioned. Because it yielded a stone post on which a dragon was carved. These are material evidence to indicate that there is a high possibility that the tombs which had mural paintings and pictorial stone were constructed in Gyeongju during the period of Unified Silla. Particularly, it is emphasized that the historical document of ≪Gyerim-lok≫ compiled by Seong-min Hong at the end of the sixteenth century provides a direct information concerning the construction of the pictorial stone tombs during the Unified Silla period. On the other hand, combining the inscriptions which appear on a gilt-bronze Sarira container lid and three different roof tiles on which the Chinese characters of either ‘Hwang Bok’(皇福) or ‘Wang Bok’(王福) are inscribed, some of the twelve cyclical animals of the Chinese zodiac stone statues exposed by archaeological excavation carried out in 1968, and historical account concerning the geographic location of the tomb of King Sinmun appearing in the ≪Samguk sagi≫, it is argued that the ruined Buddhist Temple and the putative royal tomb should be designated as Hwang Bok-sa Buddhist temple and the tomb of King Sinmun respectively.
