울산지역의 4~5세기 목곽묘 연구 (An Analysis of the Wooden Chamber Tombs of the Ulsan Region in the 4th~5th centuries)

초록

울산지역은 남북방향으로 이어지는 3개의 대구조곡과 1개의 소구조곡을 기준으로 하여 크게 4개 권역을 설정 수 있다. 4개 권역에는 각각 최상위고분군과 주변고분군이 위치하며, 위계관계를 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 권역별로 목곽묘의 유형과 평면형태, 면적, 출토유물 조합상, 상면 단차, 곽의 수 등에서 차이를 보인다. 동부는 위석목곽묘, 세장방형, 日·ㅏ자형 평면형태, 서부는 석곽묘, T자형 평면형태, 상면 단차, 중부는 U자형 내곽, 남부는 적석목곽묘에서 특징을 보인다. 동부는 경주, 서부는 부산·김해의 요소가 강하고, 중부와 남부는 동·서부의 양요소를 모두 복합적으로 반영하고 있다. 유물은 목관묘 축조기부터 울산을 비롯한 경주, 포항지역에서 대부분 공통된 문화요소를 간직하고 있었다. 고대 정치체가 형성·발전한 4~5세기대에도 대부분 신라의 문화요소를 보이고 있다. 따라서 울산, 경주, 포항은 동일한 문화기반 위에서 성장한 것 으로 파악된다. 그러나 고분의 내부구조에 있어서는 전통적인 요소와 외부적인 요소를모두 반영하고 있으며, 경주지역과 어느 정도 차이를 보인다. 울산지역은 4세기 후반까지 최상위고분군과 주변고분군이 상하관계를 가지하면서 자체적인 군사력으로 지배구조를 갖추고 있었던 것으로 판단된다. 최상위고분군에서는 대형분이 밀집해 있으며, 갑주를 비롯한 무구·무기류, 마구류, 농공구류 등의 부장이 지위에 따라 차등을 보인다. 이에 반하여 주변고분군에서는 대형분이 소수에 불과하며, 무구·무기류의 부장도 일부에서만 이루어진다. 5세기 전반부터는 신라의 직접적인 지배하에 놓이게 되면서 고분의 규모와 부장유물에서 제약을 받았던 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The Ulsan region consists of four different areas, which are divided by three large structural valleys connected along a N-S axis and a small structural valley. Each area contains, respectively, a cluster of tombs of the highest social status and peripheral tombs which also evidence social stratification. Differences in terms of tomb plan, size, grave goods assemblage, number of wooden chambers and gaps between main and sub floor can be observed between the different areas. In the eastern area, surrounding stone-type wooden chamber tombs which are an elongated rectangle or 日-shaped andㅏ-shaped in floor plan are characteristic. In the western area, stone chamber tombs which are T-shaped in floor plan and have gaps in between the main and sub floor are distinct. In the central area, the tombs have a dual cist structure and the inner cist is U-shaped in cross-section. In the southern area, the tombs demonstrate features of the wooden chamber tombs with stone mound. The tombs of the eastern area show similarities with those of Gyeongju, while the tombs of the western area contain heavy influences of the Busan·Gimhae tombs. The tombs of the central and southern area contain elements of the tombs of both the eastern and western area. From the beginning of the wooden coffin tomb phase, the grave goods show common cultural elements with the Ulsan, Gyeongju and Pohang regions. Even in the 4th~5th centuries, which is around the time of state formation, most of the cultural elements of Silla can be observed. It therefore appears that the groups of the Ulsan, Gyeongju, and Pohang regions developed from a common cultural foundation. However, the inner structure of the Ulsan tombs evidence both traditional and foreign elements, and in this sense can be regarded as being slightly different from the Gyeongju tombs. It is believed that, until the late 4th century, the groups represented by the tombs of the highest social status and peripheral tombs in the Ulsan region were structured by a hierarchical relationship and maintained their own military force. Large tombs are found concentrated in the cluster of tombs of the highest elite, and this cluster also evidences stratification in terms of grave goods, such as weaponry and armour, horse trappings and tools. In contrast, large tombs are rarely found among the peripheral tombs and weaponry and armour were only buried in a limited number of tombs. It is believed that, from the early 5th century with the beginning of Silla rule in this region, tomb size and grave goods came to be restricted.
