초록

Gwanwangmyo Shrine in our country was first built by generals in the Ming Dynasty during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597〜1598. Later, as the worship of Guan Yu spread, Gwanwangmyo Shrine was built nationwide in the late Joseon Dynasty. Particularly, during the reign of King Gojong, Gwanwangmyo Shrines were established in the four cardinal directions of the capital city, as the royal family sought to stabilize the country and its own power through the spiritual influence of Guan Yu. Gwanwangmyo Shrine has a historical value as a shrine (祠廟) that was included in the national ancestral rites of the Joseon dynasty. It has a different architectural appearance from common shrines since statues (像), rather than ancestral tablets, are enshrined here. Additionally, Gwanwangmyo Shrine built in the local area has a clearly distinctive architectural appearance compared with the one in the capital city. This study examined the characteristic and meaning of Gwanwangmyo Shrine in Namwon in the process of its founding, reconstruction, and relocation. In addition, architectural characteristics such as the location and building layout of Gwanwangmyo Shrines built in the local area, and the structure and shape of the main shrine were studied. It, also, has attempted to identify the universality and uniqueness of Gwanwangmyo Shrine in Namwon by comparing in them with those of Gwanwangmyo Shrines in Seongju, Andong, and Gangjin, which were built in the same period. Gwanwangmyo Shrine in Namwon show a high level of architectural technology, the composition of the internal space and ceremonial object relatively retain their original form, making them highly valuable.
