초록

본 논문은 불교에서 몸을 바라보는 관점을 존재론적 관점, 기능적 관점, 가능적 관점으로 제시하고자 한다. 존재론적 관점에서 몸은 불교에서 존재의 특징인 무상ㆍ고ㆍ무아의 삼법인과 공의 특징을 가진다. 기능적 관점에서 몸은 감각기능, 유기체적 기능, 연기적 기능을 한다. 십이처에서 몸은 감각기능을 하고, 오온과 사념처에서 몸은 살아있는 몸의 기능을 보여주고, 연기에서 몸은 모든 존재뿐만 아니라 몸의 구성요소들 간에도 연기적 관계를 가지는 열린 존재라는 것을 보여준다. 가능적 관점에서 몸은 번뇌와 청정의 가능성, 청정범행과 노병사의 가능성, 고락과 중도의 가능성으로 나아갈 수 있다. 신구의 삼업의 차원에서 몸은 번뇌로 나아갈 수도 있고, 청정으로 나아갈 수도 있다. 무기의 차원에서 몸은 청정범행으로 나아갈 수도 있고, 노병사로 나아갈 수도 있다. 중도의 차원에서 몸은 고락으로 나아갈 수도 있고, 중도로 나아갈 수도 있다. 이렇게 되면 몸은 ‘존재론적 특징을 전제로 하는 기능적 가능태’라고 할 수 있다.
부정관과 고는 불교에서 몸을 바라보는 기존의 대표적인 관점이라고 할 수 있다. 고와 부정은 유위법 전반에 대해서 적용될 수 있는 개념이다. 부정은 모든 유위적 존재가 깨끗하지 않다는 것으로 확장된다. 탐심을 대치하려는 부정관의 의도를 적극적으로 살리면, 탐심의 대상이 될 수 있는 모든 유위적 존재는 깨끗하지 않다고 할 수 있다. 이렇게 되면 고는 존재론적 특징이 된다. 그러므로 고와 부정이 아닌 존재론적 관점을 전제로 기능적이고 가능적으로 몸을 바라보는 것이 불교에서 몸을 바라보는 태도일 것이다.

영어초록

This paper intends to present the perspective of looking at the body in Buddhism as an ontological perspective, a functional perspective, and a potential perspective. From an ontological point of view, the body has the characteristics of being impermanent, suffering, and non-self, which are the characteristics of existence in Buddhism, and emptiness. From a functional point of view, the body has sensory functions, organic functions, and dependent originational functions. In the twelve sense fields, the body performs sensory functions, and in the five aggregates and the four establishment of mindfulness, the body shows the functions of the living body. In dependent origination, it shows that the body is an open being that has dependent originational relationships not only among all beings but also among its constituents. From the potential point of view, the body can progress to the possibility of defilement and purity, the possibility of pure living and sickness-death, and the possibility of suffering and middle way. In the dimension of the three karmas, the body can go either to defilements or to purity. In terms of unanswered questions, depending on whether the relation of the body and life as same and different or as dependent origination, it can progress toward a pure living or sickness-death. At the middle way level, the body can go either to the indulgence and asceticism or to the middle way. Therefore the body can be said to be a ‘functional potentiality that presupposes ontological characteristics’.
Suffering and contemplation on impurity can be said to be representative views of looking at the body in the Buddhism. suffering and impurity are concepts that can be applied to the conditioned dhammas. Impurity means that all conditioned beings are unclean. If the intention to replace greed is actively utilized, all conditioned beings that can be the object of greed can be said to be unclean. In this way, suffering becomes an ontological characteristic. Therefore, looking at the body in a functional and possible way based on an ontological point of view rather than suffering and impurity would be the attitude of looking at the body in Buddhism.
