신경림 시에 나타난 수몰고향의 로컬리티 연구 (Study of the Locality of Submerged Hometown in Sin Gyeng-Rim’s Poetry)

초록

신경림은 자신의 작품을 사회시로 규정할 만큼 개인적 자아에 관한 탐구보다는 사회·역사적 삶의 통찰을 시의 주된 제재로 삼는다. 따라서 그의 시에 나타난 장소는 개인적 서정을 담은 것으로 이해하기보다 중심권력으로부터 타자로 차별된 주변지역의 장소성, 즉 로컬리티의 시선으로 읽어낼 필요가 있다. 즉 신경림은 수몰고향의 장소성을 통해 1980년대 국가의 발전지상주의에 따른 공간관에 대한 성찰을 작품화한 것이다.
중심권력의 폭력성은 로컬의 장소성을 파괴하며, 이는 그곳에 거주하는 사람들의 다양한 장소 경험 방식을 통해 구체화된다. 신경림은 수몰 위기에 처한 고향을 방문하여 장소에 어린 자신의 과거를 실존적 내부성의 차원에서 경험한다. 또한 고향의 지리와 사람들이 처한 상황을 면면히 알고 있는 그는 감정이입적 내부자의 상태로 수몰 지역의 정체성을 구성하는 본질적 요소들을 만나고 이해한다. 여기서 그는 고향의 내재적이고 본원적인 특성이 아닌, 그 경계 바깥과 연결된 국가 권력의 영향으로 고향이 어떤 변화를 겪는지를 형상화한다.
궁극적으로 신경림의 기억과 재현을 통해 드러나는 수몰고향의 로컬리티는 중심의 시각에서 배제되어 온 수몰민들의 분노와 상실감을 작품화하여 그들의 타자화된 삶을 복권하는 것이다. 현재 충주댐으로 수몰된 마을은 댐 건설로 이전의 아름답던 남한강변 경관이 훼손되고 벌 형태로 남아 오히려 관광지 면모를 흐리는 등 낙후된 지역성을 면치 못하고 있다. 이에 신경림 시에 나타난 수몰고향의 로컬리티 연구는 충주댐 수몰 지역이 이러한 문제로 점철된 상황에서 로컬의 장소성을 고려하지 않는 중심권력의 발전계획에 제동을 거는 현실적·실천적 작업이 된다.

영어초록

Sin Gyeng-Rim takes a socio-historical insight on life as the main material of his poems, rather than an exploration of his ego to the extent that he defines his works as social poetry. Thus, it is necessary to read places in his poetry from the perspective of the placeness, that is, locality of the surrounding areas discriminated as others from the central power, rather than understanding them as places having his personal lyricism. In other words, Sin Gyeng-Rim produced works with his reflection on the spatial view according to the state’s development-oriented view in the 1980s through the placeness of his submerged hometown.
The violence of the central power destroys the placeness of the local area and becomes concrete through the various ways in which the residents experience the place. Sin Gyeng-Rim visits his hometown at the crisis of submergence and experiences his past sticking in the place on the dimension of existential internality. In addition, he, who knows the geography of his hometown and each of the situations in which the residents are placed, meets and understands the essential elements that constitute the identity of the area to be submerged as an empathetic insider. Here, he materializes the changes that his hometown suffers, not by the inherent and original characteristics of his hometown, but from the influence of the state power connected to the outside of the boundary.
Ultimately, the locality of his submerged hometown, revealed through Sin Gyeng-Rim’s memories and representation is to make works of art with the anger and the sense of loss of the residents in the submerged area, who have been excluded from the central viewpoint and to reinstate their lives. Currently, in the village submerged by Chungju Dam, the Namhan-gang riverside landscape, which had been beautiful before the construction of the dam, was destroyed and left as a mud flat, which rather spoils its image as a tourist destination, so it experiences a deteriorated locality. Therefore, a study on the locality of the submerged hometown in his poetry becomes a realistic and practical work that puts the development plans of the central power, not considering the placeness of the local area on the brakes in the situation in which the submerged area because of the construction of Chungju Dam with such a series of issues.
