칠궁 정당 내 木祭具와 감실 내 신주 관련 부속구의 종별 특징 (Types and Characteristics of Ceremonial Wooden Artifacts in Chilgung Shrine and Items Related to the Sinju (Spirit Tablet) in the Gamsil (Casket))

초록

본 연구는 조선 후기 국왕의 私親에게 제향을 올린 사당인 七宮 正堂 내 神主를 비롯한 각종 기물과 의장의물의 종별 특징을 알아보려는 데 있다. 칠궁은 禧嬪 장씨의 大嬪宮, 仁嬪 김씨의 儲慶宮, 淑嬪 최씨의 毓祥宮, 靖嬪 이씨의 延祜宮, 暎嬪 이씨의 宣禧宮, 綏嬪 박씨의 景祐宮, 純獻皇貴妃 엄씨의 德安宮이다. 칠궁은 원래 각각 별도로 규모있게 영건되어 의례가 거행되었으나 1908년 순종이 조선 왕실의 제사를 정비하는 칙령을 내려 육상궁에 다섯 별궁이 합사되었고 1929년 덕안궁 정당까지 이건되어 칠궁으로 완성되었다. 이러한 칠궁에 대해 그동안 宮園制 등 제도 정비나 조성 배경, 건물 구조 및 감실 등의 역사적 변천이 주로 연구되었고 龕室 내부에 핵심 의물인 신주나 정당 내부에 배치된 기물이나 설치된 의장의물 등은 주목한 적이 없어 본고에서 이것들을 처음으로 다룬다는 데에 연구사적 의의가 있다.
칠궁 정당 내부의 木祭具나 鋪陳諸具의 종별과 배치는 宗廟나 景慕宮의 것과 대체로 같은데 특히 유빈 박씨의 사후 1824년 경우궁을 조성할 당시의 전모를 기록한 『의궤』를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 현존 유물의 경우 칠궁 정당 가장 안쪽의 감실에 神主와 兩窓櫝 및 관련 排設諸具, 그 앞에 神榻과 踏掌, 神倚, 祭床과 香卓 및 灌地筒이 배치되어 있으나, 기록과 달리 冊印欌을 비롯하여 神簾, 揮帳, 扇蓋 및 각종 포진제구는 대부분 훼손되거나 배치되지 않아 향후 이에 대한 복원이 필요하다. 감실 내부의 신주는 기록된 대로 韜로 싸고, 藉를 깔고 櫝座에 넣고 盖를 덮은 다음 양창독에 넣고 그 아래에는 포진제구를 2중으로 깔고 배치되어 있었다. 다만 현존 유물 중 비단으로 제작한 도와 자, 그리고 양창독 내부에 바른 紗羅는 직물의 특성상 훼손되거나 탈색 변색되는 등 포진제구는 온전한 것이 거의 없어 개보수가 요구된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and characteristics of various kinds of ritual goods and objects, including Sinju (spirit tablet), which are placed in Chilgung, the seven shrines each of where rituals were held to the king’s birth mother in the late Joseon Dynasty. Chilgung refers to Huibin Jang’s Daebingung, Inbin Kim’s Jeogyeonggung, Sukbin Choe’s Yuksanggung, Jeongbin Yi’s Yeonhogung, Yeongbin Yi’s Seonhuigung, Yubin Bak’s Gyeongugung, and Gwibi Eom’s Deogangung.
Chilgung (the Seven Shrines) was originally constructed as a set of individual shrines, each serving as the site of separate ritual ceremonies. However, in 1908, following Emperor Sunjong’s directive to reorganize royal ancestral rites, five of the shrines were consolidated into Yuksanggung. Later, in 1929, with the addition of Deogangung, the current configuration of Chilgung was completed.
Until now, research on Chilgung Shrine has primarily focused on historical aspects such as legal frameworks, the background of its construction, architectural structure, and the Gamsil (casket for the spirit tablet). However, ceremonial objects—including the Sinju (spirit tablet)—that are housed within the buildings and the Gamsil have remained largely unexamined. Therefore, this study is significant as it represents the first comprehensive investigation into these ritual artifacts.
The types and arrangements of wooden ritual utensils and other various items within Chilgung Shrine closely resembled those found in Jongmyo Shrine and Gyeongmogung. This similarity is corroborated by the Uigwe (Illustrated Protocols of State Rites) compiled during the construction of Gyeongugung in 1824. Existing ritual artifacts include the Sinju (spirit tablet), a two-windowed spirit tablet casket (Gamsil), and related ceremonial items. In front of the Gamsil were placed a table for the spirit tablet, a ritual table, an incense burner table, and a coffin container. Notably, as recorded in the Uigwe, the spirit tablet was first placed in a triple-tiered device lined, covered, and wrapped with silk, then positioned on a double-layered mat, and finally enshrined on a wooden pedestal specifically designed for the casket.
However, contrary to the records in the Uigwe, the existing artifacts do not include the silk cover or mat, both of which require restoration. Moreover, items made of silk or paper have suffered damage or discoloration and are therefore in need of conservation.
