초록

본 연구는 조선 후기 나전유물인 나전베갯모(민속1172)를 자세히 살펴봄으로써 조선 후기 나전칠기에관한 조형성과 기법적인 특성, 역사적인 의미를 조명하고 이를 근거로 현재 우리 민족정서의 기원을 재인식하여 향후 현대공예에 적용할 수 있는 전통 미의식의 발전 가능성을 재고하고 새로운 나전칠기 공예품개발방향에 필요한 이론적 자료를 제시하고자 하였다.
본 연구의 진행은 크게 세단계로 진행된다. 첫째, 여러 문헌자료를 바탕으로 조선시대를 전기, 중기, 후기로 나누고 각 시대적 특징과 변화 요소를 살펴본다.
둘째, 전해지는 대표적인 나전유물을 통하여 조선시대나전칠기의 시기별 특징과 변화요소를 고찰하며 조선시대 베갯모의 다양한 모습을 제작 기법과 재료 등의관점에서 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 나전 기법과베갯모에 관한 여러 연구 자료와 각종 유물 관련 도록 등을 참고 하였으며 이를 바탕으로 나전베갯모(민속1172)유물을 분석하고자 한다.
조선시대는 성리학과 유교를 근간으로 500여 년이나 이어진 왕조로 크게 3기로 구분할 수 있다. 먼저건국 후 왜란 전까지 조선의 기틀을 마련한 전기, 임진왜란ㆍ병자호란 그리고 붕당청치로 국가적 위기를맞이했던 중기, 그리고 영ㆍ정조 문예의 부흥기를 통해 민족정서의 바탕을 마련하였지만 새로운 문물을접하면서 정치ㆍ문화적으로 격동기를 겪고 새로운 시대를 맞을 준비를 하지 못하여 조선왕조를 마감하게되는 후기로 구별해 볼 수 있다.
조선 전기의 나전유물은 고려의 영향을 받아 귀족적이고 불교적인 경향을 띈다. 그러나 곧 유교사상을반영하는 기물들이 제작되었고 후기로 넘어오면서 국권의 약화와 부유한 상인층의 형성으로 나전칠기의대중화가 이루어졌다. 이 때 나전칠기에 나타난 조선후기의 미의식은 한국의 민족정서와 예술정신의 밑거름이 되었다.
조선시대의 베갯모는 다양한 재료로 제작되었는데당시의 일상생활용품과 마찬가지로 소망과 희구의 마음을 장식에 담아 표현함으로써 그 당시의 민속사상을 고스란히 담고 있다.
나전베갯모(민속1172)는 나무 소지에 흑칠을 하고줄음질과 끊음질 기법으로 장식되었다. 장식문양인 봉황과 매화, 대나무는 조선의 정신적 중심인 유교적 사상과 민간신앙이 어우러져 있음을 반영하는 장식으로다른 여러 기물에도 공통적으로 나타난다. 흐트러진대칭구조와 해학적인 느낌의 형태는 조선 후기 민화풍의 이미지와 닮아있다.
나전베갯모(민속1172)의 연구를 통한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조선 후기 나전칠기는 부유한 상인층의 대두와 옻칠에 관한 엄격한 국가의 관리가 소홀해지면서 대중화되었다. 둘째, 나전장식은 줄음질과 끊음질이 성행하였고 해학적인 형태와 회화풍의 자유로운 구성이 유행하였다. 셋째, 조선 후기 미의식은 상류층과 서민층의 취향이 어우러져 토착화된 미감으로한국 민족정서의 기틀을 마련했다이상의 연구는 조선 후기 나전베갯모(민속1172)장식에 관련된 여러 문헌자료와 유물을 살펴본 것으로 조선 후기 나전칠기에 관한 이론적 자료를 보완하고 토속적인 우리 민족 정서의 근원에 관하여 고찰하였다.

영어초록

This study aimed to suggest theoretical datanecessary for the development of new lacqueredhandcraft with mother-of-pearl ornament, and also toreconsider the possibility of developing traditionalaesthetic consciousness applicable to the future moderncraft, by examining the lacquered pillow end withmother-of-pearl ornament(Folklore1172) which is thelacquered relic from the late Choseon dynasty, sheddinglight on the formativeness, technical characteristics,and historical significant of the lacquered ware withmother-of-pearl ornament of the late Choseon dynasty,and based on it, recognizing the origin of our currentnational emotion.
The progress of this research is consist of threeparts. First, this study will examine social and culturalfactors in accordance with periodical changes of Choseondynasty can be largely divided into three periods basedon the number of literature data. Second, this researchwill discuss criterion about characteristic ofmother-of-pearl lacquer in each period of ChoseonDynasty through the typical mother-of-pearl artifacts inChoseon Dynasty and analyze a variety of features ofpillow ends decorated by mother-of-pearl in terms oftechniques and materials. To this end, various studies andbrochures related to pillow ends with mother-of-pearlornament in Choseon Dynasty is reviewed and based onthis reference a Lacquered Pillow End withMother-of-Pearl Ornament(Folk 1172) is analyzed.
As a dynasty continued for about 500 years basedon Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism, Choseondynasty can be largely divided into three periodsincluding the early period in which its basis wasestablished after its foundation before Japaneseinvasion, the middle period facing the national crisiscaused by Japanese invasion, Manchu invasion andfaction politics, and the late period in which Choseondynasty was closed down due to lack of preparation forthe new era after experiencing new culture andpolitical/cultural turbulent era even after establishingthe foundation of national emotion through the periodof the Renaissance in King Yeongjo and Jeongjo.
The lacquered relics with mother-of-pearlornament of the late Choseon dynasty show noble andBuddhistic tendency influenced by Goryeo. Before long,however, objects reflecting Confucian ideas wereproduced. In the late part, the lacquered ware withmother-of-pearl ornament was popularized owing tothe weakened national sovereignty and formation ofrich merchant groups. The aesthetic consciousnessshown in the late Choseon dynasty became thefoundation of Korean national emotion and spirit of art.
The pillow end of Choseon dynasty produced invarious materials contains the folk ideas of the time byexpressing their hopes and desires in the ornament, justlike other daily household items of the time.
The lacquered pillow end with mother-of-pearlornament(Folklore1172) was lacquered on wood withblack lacquer and decorated in such techniquesincluding Juleumjil(digging) and Keuneumjil(cutting).
Its decorative patterns include phoenix, apricot blossomand bamboo reflecting shamanistic folk beliefs in thelate Choseon dynasty, which are shown in other variousobjects. Its asymmetric structure and humorousfeelings are similar to the image of the folk paintingsin the late Choseon dynasty.
The results of the study on the lacquered warewith mother-of-pearl ornament are like following. First,the production of the lacquered ware withmother-of-pearl ornament in the late Choseon dynastywas popularized getting out of the strict control of thestate. Second, Juleumjil and Keuneumjil were a lot usedfor the lacquered ware with mother-of-pearl ornament,and its humorous form and free composition came in.
Third, the aesthetic consciousness of the late Choseon dynasty was based on the tastes of the upper class andordinary people, which established the basis of Koreannational emotion.
Examining various literature and relics related tothe lacquered pillow end with mother-of-pearlornament(Folklore1172) of the late Choseon dynasty,this study complemented theoretical data aboutlacquered ware with mother-of-pearl ornament of thelate Choseon dynasty, and also considered the originof our folk national emotion.
