민요를 바라보는 몇 가지 시선 －임동권 선생의 『한국민요집』 살피기－ (A few views in looking at Folk Song －Looking at 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』 of Im Dong-gwon－)

초록

이 글은 임동권 선생이 간행한 『한국민요집』의 가치와 의미를 살핀 글이다. 한국 민요 연구사에서 임동권 선생의 『한국민요집』의 가치는 부인할 수 없지만, 몇 가지 한계를 가진 것도 분명하다. 이 글에서는 당대의 학문 흐름을 바탕으로 『한국민요집』의 한계와 의의를 살폈다. 먼저 임동권 선생은 『한국민요집』 수록의 민요를 취사 선택하였다. 민요가 전승되는 현장을 중심에 둔 것이 아니라 철저하게 임동권 선생의 관점에 따라 선택하였다. 민요 전승의 현장에서는 동일한 노래라도 가창자, 가창 환경, 수용자에 따라 가감이나 변화가 있게 마련이고 그것이 곧 구비문학으로서 민요의 특성이 될 터인데 임동권 선생은 자신의 관점이 곧 민요 선택의 기준이라고 제시한 것이다. 임동권 선생은 민요의 전승 지역이 가진 의미에 대해서는 전혀 고려하지 않았고 가창자나 전승자가 가지고 있는 민요에 대한 인식을 전혀 반영하지 않았다. 그래서 민요 분류항목의 기준도 모호하고, 각 항목 간의 위상도 분명하지 않다. 무엇보다 각편에 대한 정보가 상당히 부족하다. 민요의 가사와 함께 수록되었던 책이나 조사 지역만이 병기되어 있을 뿐 어떤 상황에서 부른 노래이고, 가창자의 성별과 연령이 기재되어 있지 않다. 그래서 임동권 선생의 『한국민요집』은 민요 연행 환경이 온전하게 남아있었을 당시 상황에서 기능, 곡조에 대한 관심을 나타내지 않고 오로지 노랫말에만 집중한 성과이다.
이러한 연구를 보인 데에는 다음과 같은 연유가 있을 것으로 추론하였다. 첫째 당대의 국어국문학계는 우리말과 우리글을 둘러싼 다양한 환경보다는 말과 글 자체에 초점을 맞추어, 설화나 민요를 조사 연구할 때 연행 환경보다 텍스트에 중심을 두었다. 임동권 선생도 이러한 흐름 속에서 그리고 국어국문학과 교수로 봉직하고 있어서 노랫말에 집중했을 것이라고 추정한다. 둘째로 임동권 선생은 한국 민요를 통해 민족성과 전통성을 찾으려 했다. 이 당시 민속학자들은, 민속이 우리 민족의 본질을 담고 있다고 보았다. 그들이 민족의 본질을 드러내는 데 최적의 자료로 삼은 것은 연행 환경이나 기능, 연행자가 아니라 그들이 부른 노랫말, 탈춤의 대본, 판소리 창본 등의 텍스트였고 임동권 선생도 그러했다. 셋째 무형문화재 제도가 영향을 주었다. 당시의 민속학자들은 연행상황이나 구체적인 사회 문화적 배경을 살피지 않고 텍스트를 통해 민족문화의 가치를 드러내려 했고, 그를 제도화한 것이 무형문화재 제도였다. 임동권 선생은 무형문화재 제도를 통해 민족문화의 가치를 드러내려 했고 그러한 연장선상에서 민요의 노랫말에만 주목하였다. 임동권 선생은 단순하게 민요를 모으는 데 그치는 것이 아니라 그를 활용하여 민족성을 드러내는 것까지 염두에 두었다. 사방에 자연물처럼 널린 민요 중에서 자신의 선택에 맞는 것을 골라 채집하였고, 채집물을 진열하듯이 『한국민요집』에 수록하였다. 그래서 글쓴이는 임동권 선생을 민요채집가로 정의한다.

영어초록

This article has taken a look at the outcome of 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』 published by Im Dong-gwon. In the folk song history of Korea, the value of 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』 of Im Dong-gwon cannot be denied, but it is clear to have certain limitations as well. In this article, it has taken a look at the limitations and implications of 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』 on the basis of academic flow of the time. First of all, Im Dong-gwon has opted to collect the folk songs listed in 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』. He did not focus on the field to hand down the folk songs, rather he made choices following thoroughly on the point of view of Im Dong-gwon. Within the field of handing down the folk songs, even the same song may have fluctuation or variables depending on singer, singing environment and accommodator, and it would become the feature of such folk song as the oral literature, and Im Dong-gwon has presented that his own point of view would be the standard of the folk song selection. Im Dong-gwon did not consider on implications contained in the succession region of the folk song and he did not reflect the perception of singer or successor toward the folk song whatsoever. Therefore, the standard for folk song classifying category is ambiguous and the status for each category is not clear. More than anything else, the information for each piece is significantly insufficient. Together with the lyrics of the folk songs have only the books listed along and the regions for survey are indicated, but it does not record what circumstance the song was sung, or gender and age of the singer. Thus, 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』 of Im Dong-gwon was the outcome from intensely concentrating only on lyrics without showing interests in functions and melody under the situation where the folk song performance environment was fully intact.
It is assumed that displaying such a study may have the following grounds. First, the Korean language and literature sector at this time was focusing on the words and writings themselves rather than the diverse environment surrounding out words and out writings to focus on the text over the performance environment when undertaking survey and research of story tales or folk songs. Im Dong-gwon was also working as a professor in the Korean language and literature department under such a flow that it is assumed that he was concentrating on the lyrics in songs. Second, Im Dong-gwon aimed at searching for nationality and tradition through the Korean folk song. The folklore scholars at this time considered that the folklore contains the intrinsic value of our people. What they considered for optimal data to demonstrate the intrinsic value of the people was the texts in lyrics of them singing, script for mask dance, publication of pansori, and so forth, not the performing environment, its function or performer and it was the stance of Im Dong-gwon. And, third, the intangible cultural heritage system has made impact. The folklore scholars of the time did not look at the performance situation or detailed social and cultural background, but they attempted to show off the value of national culture through the texts, and they epitomized such effort in the intangible cultural heritage system. Im Dong-gwon tried to display the value of national culture through such intangible cultural heritage system and paid attention only to the lyrics of such folk song in this perspective. Im Dong-gwon did not simply gathering the folk songs but intended to facilitate the same to demonstrate the intrinsic features of its people. From the folk songs scattered all around like the natural objects, he collected ones that fitted to his choices and those collected articles are listed on 『Collection of Folk Songs of Korea』 as he was displaying his collections. Therefore, this writer defines Im Dong-gwon as the folk song collector.
