백용성과 소태산의 同異에 대한 몇가지 문제 (Several considerations on the same and different parts of Baek Yongseong and Sotaesan)

초록

본 고찰은 근대공간 종교계의 거목인 백용성과 소태산을 비교하려는 논고이다. 이들은 불교의 혁신, 개혁을 추구하였고, 나아가서는 독자적인 불교의 교단(대각교, 불법연구회)을 출범시킨 불교혁신가, 불교개혁가였다.
그런데, 지금껏 이들에 대한 비교 연구는 거의 시도되지 않았다. 때문에 이글은 이들의 비교 연구를 촉진하는 성격을 갖는다. 인문학에서 비교를 하려면양측의 인물에 대한 이해가 충분해야 한다. 그리고 비교하는 관점이 선명해야한다. 이런 측면에서 필자는 이 연구의 적합자는 아니지만, 이 분야 연구를 개척하겠다는 입론에서 연구를 수행하였다.
백용성은 전통 불교의 교단으로 출가, 수행을 하여 깨친 고승이다. 그는 3⋅1운동 민족대표를 역임한 이후 역경, 출판, 참선결사회, 선농불교 등을 통해 불교혁신 활동을 치열하게 추진했다. 나아가서는 제도권 교단을 이탈하여 독자적인 교단인 대각교(大覺敎)를 창립(1926)하였다. 그러나 일제의 외압으로 대각교의 자진 해소, 조선불교선종 총림(朝鮮佛敎禪宗叢林)으로 재기, 해방 이후에는 대각회로 계승되었다. 이렇듯 백용성은 기존 불교 교단의 ‘주변부’에 있었다. 그에 반해 소태산은 수행과 오도를 한 이후 새로운 회상인 불법연구회(佛法硏究會)를 창립(1924)하였다. 이는 기존 불교 교단 및 여타 신흥종교와 무관한 노선이자 조직체이었는데 해방 이후에는 원불교로 계승되었다. 소태산의 지향은 불법에 연원을 둔 혁신불교이었는데, 불법연구회는 교단과 신흥 종교의 경계에 서 있었다.
필자가 주목한 비교의 대상은 일원상(一圓相), 삼학수행(三學修行), 승려의자립, 한글이다. 이와 같은 대상을 선정한 것은 백용성과 소태산의 행적, 정체성을 극명하게 보여준다고 판단하였기 때문이다. 이 논고가 백용성, 소태산, 대각교, 원불교, 개혁불교 등의 연구에 참고가 되길 기대한다.

영어초록

This is the dissertation to compare Baek Yongseong, the great tree of the religioussect in modern times, with Sotaesan. They pursued an innovation, reformation ofBuddhism, and moreover they were the Buddhist innovators, the Buddhist reformerswho inaugurated the religious orders of the independent Buddhism(Daegakgyo,Bulbeop research society). But so far, there have never been tried for thecomparative research on them.
So, this has the characteristic to promote the comparative study for them. If youwant to compare them in Humanities, you should understand both figures enough.
And the perspective to compare must be clear. In this part, I am not a suitableperson for the research though, I just implemented the study in the position todevelop this research field.
Baek Yongseong is a prelate who came to the traditional buddhist order,practiced, and gained an enlightenment. After he was in charge of the racialrepresentative of 3.1 Koean independent movement, he promoted hard theinnovative buddhist movement through translating sutras, publication, Chamseonresolution society, and Seonnong Buddhism etc. Furthermore, he establishedDaegakgyo(大覺敎, 1926) which was an independent religious order, leaving from the traditional system sect. the comprehensive monastic complex of JoseonBuddhist Seon sect, and was succeeded to the Daegak Society.Such like this, BaekYongseong was in ‘Surrounding part’ of existent Buddhist order.
On the other hand, Sotaesan established Bulbeop research society(1924), whichwas a new organization, after doing practice and gaining an enlightenment. Thiswas the irrelevant line and organization to the existent buddhist sect and other newreligions, but it was succeeded to Wonbulgyo(圓佛敎) after Korean liberation. Theaiming point of Sotaesan was the innovative buddhism based on the origination ofBuddhist dharma, the Bulbeop research society stood on the border between thereligious order and a new religion.
The comparative subjects that I focused on are the mark of great circle(一圓相),Practice with the three supreme principles(三學修行), Priest’s Economy ofindependence(僧侶의 經濟的 自立), and Hangul(Korean). I thought that theyshowed well the pasts, identifications of Baek Yongseong and Sotaesan for thereason why I choose such factors.
I look forward to having this dissertation that can be a reference for the studies onBaek Yongseong, Sotaesan, Daegakgyo, Wonbulgyo, and Innovative Buddhism etc.
