『吳歈萃雅』를 통해 본 17세기 明末 서사문학 삽화의 회화사적 의의 (The Significance of Illustration in the Epic Literature of the Late Ming Dynasty: An Art History Perspective Through Wuyucuiya)

초록

본 논문은 『吳歈萃雅』 삽화를 통해 17세기 명말 서사문학 삽화의 회화사적 의의를 고찰 하였다. 『오유췌아』는 1616년 周之標(?~?)에 의해 소주에서 간행된 戱曲選本이자 16점의 삽화를 수록한 삽화본이다. 희곡은 명대 주요한 서사문학 장르였으며, 명말에는 금릉, 무 림, 소주를 중심으로 삽화본이 다량으로 제작되었다. 그중 소주의 판화는 <西廂記> 판본과 더불어 희곡선본을 만들면서 양식적으로 성장하였다.
명말 소주를 배경으로 제작된 『오유췌아』는 서두에 題辭와 小引 등을 갖출 뿐만 아니라 삽화를 효과적으로 활용한 서적이었다. 16점의 삽화는 ‘題境’으로서 서적의 외관을 꾸미고, 제정을 펼친 이미지였다. 또한, 널리 유통되지 않았던 <明珠記>의 두 장면을 삽화로 만들 어 대중적이기보다 소수의 아취 있는 이미지를 추구했다. 『오유췌아』 삽화는 펼친 두 면이 한 폭의 그림을 이루는 쌍면연식으로 권수에 배치되었다. 이러한 판식으로 인해 삽화는 글 을 포함해 감상할 수 있는 이미지가 되었다.
『오유췌아』 삽화의 회화사적 의의는 크게 두 가지이다. 첫째, 소주판화의 양식적 특징이 나타난다. 『오유췌아』는 같은 휘파 계통인 무림의 판본들과 상관관계가 있지만, 장식적인 무 림판화에 비해 인물과 산수 표현이 간결하고 담백한 소주판화로 구별된다. 둘째, 시의도를 수용·변용해 희곡의 이미지를 만든다. <白兔記>의 삽화를 <淸明>의 시에 맞춘 이미지로 그린다거나 <浣沙記>의 ‘採蓮’ 장면을 산곡 선본이나 시사화보처럼 표현하는 등이다. 다시 말해, 『오유췌아』 삽화는 희곡 서사에 얽매이지 않고 시정을 추구한 이미지로 의미가 있다.

This paper investigates the significance of late-Ming period epic literature illustration within the context of the history of painting, using the example of Wuyucuiya. Published in Suzhou in 1616 by Zhou Zhibiao (?-?), Wuyucuiya is an anthology of plays featuring 16 illustrations. During the Ming period, plays were a prominent narrative literature genre, with numerous illustrated playbooks published in Jinling, Wulin, and Suzhou. In Suzhou particularly, stylistic advancements were made within works such as Xixianji (The Romance of the Western Chamber).
Wuyucuiya, set in Suzhou during the late Ming dynasty, not only included appropriate inscriptions and introductions but also effectively utilized illustrations. These images not only set the scene for the plays but also adorned the volume's exterior, enhancing its overall presentation. Notably, they featured two scenes from Mingzhuji, which were not widely distributed at the time, and catered to a more sophisticated audience rather than the general public. The illustrations in Wuyucuiya were positioned at the beginning of the book in a double-page spread format, allowing for appreciation of the images containing text.
The illustrations in Wuyucuiya hold historical significance in the realm of painting for two key reasons. Firstly, they represent an early example of the stylistic traits of Suzhou woodblock prints. While classified under the same Anhui school as their counterparts from Wulin to which they are correlated, they exhibit the distinct succinctness and lightness of Suzhou prints, especially in the depiction of figures and landscapes, contrasting with Wulin's decorative style. Secondly, they incorporate the style of poetry-based painting in the rendering of images from dramatic plays. For instance, the illustration for Baituji reflects the Qingming poem, and the “lotus picking” scene in Huanshaji resembles imagery from a collection of sanqu verses or a poetry painting manual. In essence, the illustrations in Wuyucuiya are significant for their pursuit of a poetic refinement that transcends the narrative confines of the plays.
