중국 남조의 사찰명 분석을 통해 본 남조불교의 특징 ― 백제 불교 이해를 위한 전제 ― (The features of the Southern Dynasties’ Buddhism seen through the analysis of the names of the temples)

초록

현재 확인 가능한 중국 남조 사찰명을 분석하여 분류를 시도해 보았다. 크게 명칭형과 종교형으로 양대분하고, 명칭형은 다시 지명형과 인명형으로 구분했다. 종교형은 다시 인간의 보편적 기원이나 전통신앙에서 유래된 용어를 쓴 사찰명과 불교적 용어를 채용한 사찰명으로 구분할 수 있었다.
동진이전의 사찰 건립 초기에는 지명과 인명 중심의 명칭형이 다수를 차지했는데, 그것이 남조대에 이르면 지명형부터 크게 줄어들기 시작하여, 남제대에는 인명형마저 그 비중이 미미해지니 이제 종교형이 절대 다수를 차지하게 되었다. 그리고 양대에는 종교형 가운데에도 불교형 이름의 비중이 가장 높아지게 되었다.
사찰명의 시대적 변화는 중국에서 불교 이해가 점차 깊이를 가지게 되어 가는 양상을 그대로 반영하는 것으로 이해된다. 지명이나 인명 등을 채용한 사찰명은 과도기적인 양상으로 이러한 이름은 곧 사라질 것이 예견되는 것이었다. 종교형 사찰명 가운데 전통신앙형 역시 순차적으로 불교적 용어에 밀려서 후퇴되었어야 하겠지만, 견고한 역사적⋅철학사상적 기반을 가지고 있는 중국의 전통 철학 사상은 오히려 불교에게서 변용을 이끌어냈고, 그러한 사정은 사찰명에도 반영되었다. 전통신앙적 성격의 용어가 이후에도 사라지지 않고 계속 사찰명에 채용되었으며 마침내 일반화되기에 이르른 것이다. 남조대는 불교가 중국의 전통사상과 신앙의 기반위에서 이해되는 과정을 거치는데 그와 같은 사실이 사찰 명칭에서도 다시 한 번 확인되는 것이다.
이와 같은 불교가 백제에 전해졌다. 백제는 동진으로부터 불교를 수용하였고, 그 이후에도 백제는 주로 남조와 교류하며 정치⋅외교적으로, 또 문화적으로 남조의 영향을 받은 바가 크다. 백제 불교 역시 남조 불교의 영향이 적다 할 수 없을 것이다. 그런 점에서 남조 불교가 중국 전통 사상⋅철학과 긴밀하게 얽혀 있었다는 사실은 백제 불교의 모습을 추론하는 데 참고할 필요가 있다.
백제에 수용된 불교는 백제에서 또 다시 백제의 전통적인 철학사상⋅신앙과 서로 영향을 주고 받으며 성장해 갔을 것이다. 수용 초기의 불교와 백제에서 일정한 시간을 지난 불교 사이에는 어느 정도 차이가 형성되었을 가능성이 있다. 그러나 백제가 처음 수용한 불교, 그리고 그 이후 백제불교에 영향을 주었을 남조 불교가 여전히 도교 등 전통사상적 요소를 포함하고 있었다는 점, 그리고 불교를 수용한 백제 사상계의 기반이 불교의 그러한 요소와 친연성을 가지고 있었다는 점 등을 고려하면 수용기뿐 아니라 이후의 불교에서도 전통신앙적 요소는 엄연히 존재하였을 것이다. 즉 백제에서 불교는 도교 등 중국 전통사상⋅신앙적 요소와 서로 분리되어 존재한 적이 없이 늘 함께였던 것으로 짐작된다.

영어초록

I tried the analysis and the categorization of the temple names of the Southern Dynasties in China. First, I categorized them into name type and religion type. Then, I categorized the name type again into region-name type and person-name type. Finally, I categorized the religion type into general religious term type and Buddhist term type.
In the early days of building temples, before East Jin Dynasty, many of the names were name type. However, as it reached the Southern Dynasties, name types rapidly decreased, starting with the region-name type. At the NamJae period, the person-name type decreased too, and religion type held a huge proportion. At the Yang Dynasty, the Buddhist term type held the largest proportion.
The change of temple names along times reflects the deepening understanding of Buddhism in China. The temple names using the names of people or regions were a transition period, and were deemed to disappear. Out of the religion types, the general (traditional) religious term type must have retreated gradually because of the Buddhistic term type names, but the Chinese traditional religion with its strong historic and philosophical roots actually changed Chinese Buddhism, and it was shown likewise on the names of the temples. The traditional religious term type names didn’t disappear and were constantly used for the temple names and it was gradually generalized. The Southern Dynasties period is when Buddhism is understood on the basis of Chinese traditional philosophy and religion, and it was reflected directly to the temple names.
This kind of Buddhism was accepted to Baekjae. Baekjae embraced Buddhism from East Jin, and even after that, Baekjae mainly interchanged with the Southern Dynasties and was influenced very much in political, diplomatic, and cultural ways. The Buddhism of Baekjae also was influenced very much by the Buddhism of the Southern Dynasties. In that point we need to remember that the Southern Dynasties’ Buddhism is very much intertwined with traditional Chinese ideas and philosophy when inferring the form of Baekjae’s Buddhism.
The Buddhism accepted by Baekjae must have developed while exchanging influence with the traditional philosophy and ideas of Baekjae. The early times of Buddhism in Baekjae and Buddhism in Baekjae after a certain period of time should have some difference. However if we think of the fact that Buddhism first accepted in Baekjae, and the Buddhism after some time later still contained some traditional content such as Taoism, and the fact that the base of Baekjae ideas had affinity with such content in Buddhism we can deduce that Buddhism in the accepting times and after still contained elements of traditional religion. Thus it is thought that in Baekjae, Buddhism was never separated from Chinese traditional philosophy and ideas such as Taoism and was always together.
