정호의 철학과 明代 유학의 탈주자학적 경향 (Cheng Hao’s Philosophy and the anti-trend of the Chu-tzu’s doctrine in Confucianism of Ming-Dynasty)

이정(二程) 형제, 정호(程顥)와 정이(程頤) 철학의 동이 여부는 오늘날까지 신유학의 사상사적 흐름에 대한 논의에 있어 주요 쟁점 중 하나이다. 본 연구는 이와 관련하여 이정 형제의 학문적 차이를 강조하는 신유학의 사상사적 맥락을 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 탈주자학적 사상 경향이 본격화되는 명대 유학에서 정호 철학을 정이-주희와 구별되는 별도의 사상적 체계로 간주하기 시작한다는 점에 주목한다. 명대 유학에서 정호를 존숭하는 분위기는 진헌장(陳獻章)에서 감지된다. 그의 제자인 담약수(湛若水)는 정호와 정이의 학문적 차별성을 제기하며, 정호의 사상은 주돈이에게서 전수받은 것인 반면 정이는 주돈이를 인정하지 않고 있다고 본다. 이로부터 그는 공자 이래 유학의 도통을 주돈이와 정호가 이어받았다고 주장한다. 이러한 입장은 왕수인(王守仁)에게로 이어진다. 한편, 이들과 동시대의 나흠순(羅欽順)은 形而上과 形而下의 구분과 관련된 道-器 문제를 통해 정호와 정이의 사상적 차이를 이론적 차원에서 다룬다. 그는 이를 통해 자신의 ‘理氣一物’ 이론이 정호에 근거하고 있음을 주장한다. 명대 말기의 학자인 유종주(劉宗周)와 황종희(黃宗羲)는 이러한 주장들을 종합하여, 정호의 철학을 ‘氣’중심의 일원론적 체계로 조망한다. 그들은 정호와 장재(張載)의 사상적 연관성을 강조하면서 이를 뒷받침하고 있다. 이와 같은 탈주자학적 명대 유학 사조는 기존의 주자학이 근거하고 있는 학문적 계보를 대체하는 사상 전통을 재구성한다. 이정 형제의 학문적 차이를 강조하는 현대의 연구 관점은 상당부분 이러한 명대 학술에 의거한 것이다. 이 점에서 정호와 정이 철학의 동이 여부는 실제 원전상의 사상적 차이 여부라기보다는 정호 철학이 주자학적인가 아닌가라는 해석의 문제라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

In the discussion of the philosophical development of Neo-Confucianism, one of the main issue until the present is whether Cheng brothers(二程) , Cheng Hao(程顥) and Cheng Yi(程頤) have the same scholarship or not. This dissertation attempts to examine the philosophical context of the Neo-Confucianism that emphasizes the academic differences between Cheng brothers’ thought. Especially I focused on the fact as follow: From the Confucianism of Ming-Dynasty, the viewpoint of the anti-trend of the Chu-tzu’s doctrine has emerged. It distincts the thoughts between Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, and regards Cheng Hao’s philosophy as the authentical heir of the Confucianism that fully succeed from Confucius and Mencius. A mood of respect for Cheng Hao in the Ming Confucianism are sensed in the texts of Chen xian-zhang(陳獻章). His disciple Chan Jo-shui(湛若水) had positively raised the academic distinction of Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, saying that only Cheng Hao had been succeed from the philosophy of Zhou Dun-yi(周敦頤), while Cheng Yi does not acknowledge it. For this reason, he claims that Cheng Hao and Zhou Dun-yi carried on the Dao of the Confucianism. This point of view also can be found in the thoughts of Wang Shou-ren(王守仁). On the other hand, Luo Qin-shun(羅欽順), a contemporary of these scholars, deals with the differences between Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi from a theoretical dimension. He analyzed the relation of Dao(道) and Qi(器), which is associated with the metaphysical and physical classification. He argued that his theory of ‘Oneness of Li-Qi(理氣一物)’ is based on the theory of Cheng Hao. At the end of Ming Dynasty, Liu Zong-zhou(劉宗周) and Huang Zong-xi(黃宗羲) put these various ideas together and views a philosophy of Cheng Hao as Qi(氣) centered monistic system. They emphasized the ideological connection between Zhang Zai(張載) and Cheng Hao in order to support their philosophical view. In this way, the anti-trend of the Chu-tzu’s doctrine in the Ming Confucianism reestablishes the tradition of thought which is replaced the academic genealogy where the existing the Chu-tzu’s doctrine is based. The perspective of modern research on the genealogy of Confucianism in Song-Ming period is based on the scholarship in Ming Dynasty that emphasizes the academic distinction of Cheng brothers. As of the likeness in the philosophy of Cheng Hao(程顥) and Cheng Yi(程頤), it is a matter of interpretation about whether Cheng Hao’ philosophy can be relevantly understood as the doctrine of the Chu-tzu rather than an ideological differences in original text.
