고려후기 銘詩·挽詩의 특성과 장르적 상관성 (Characteristics and Genre Correlation of Myeongsi(銘詩) and Mansi(挽詩) in the Late Goryeo Dynasty)

초록

본고는 애도시의 관점에서 고려후기 銘詩·挽詩 두 양식의 양상과 특성을 밝히고 그 장르적 상관성 문제를 검토하였다.
고려후기에는 묘지명의 명시가 활발히 지어지는 가운데 만시 창작도 증가했다. 두 양식은 죽음이란 사건에서 비롯되고 애도를 기본 속성으로 한다는 점에선 공통되나 애도의 층위와 표현, 죽음 인식과 이미지에서는 대조를 이룬다. 명시는 망자를 공적 영역에서 다루고 칭양을 위주로 하는 데 대해 만시는 공적 영역과 개인적 관계에 걸쳐서 망자를 이야기하고 생자의 비탄을 위주로 한다. 명시의 시간은 영속적이고 미래를 향하며 그 어휘와 어조는 확신에 차고 당당하고 상승의 기세를 드러낸다. 반면 만시의 시간은 현재에 머물고 머뭇거리며 어휘와 어조는 침울하고 하강하는 경향을 보인다.
죽음 인식과 이미지에서도 대조적인 면이 드러난다. 명시에는 무덤이나 저승에 대한 언급이 자주 보이고 만시에는 장례 의식이나 장례와 관련된 용어가 빈번히 등장한다. 명시는 죽음을 받아들이면서도 그것을 이름이나 업적, 자손, 또 誠의 理法과 같은 인간의 영역에서 할 수 있는 노력으로 초극하려는 세계관을 가지고 있다. 만시는 죽음이라는 불가항력적 사태에 직면해 사/생의 격리, 인생의 유한함에 대한 허무와 절망감을 토로하고 신선사상이나 비교적 자유로운 내세관을 드러낸다.
두 양식은 애도시로서 역할 분담을 하면서 상호 보완적 관계를 이루었다. 그런데 고려후기에는 이런 분담의 경계가 흐려지는 양상도 나타난다. 이것은 상장례의 정착, 묘지명 문화의 쇠퇴, 그리고 三首連章體와 같은 만시 자체의 변화, 여기에 작자의식의 성장이 요인으로 작용했을 것이다. 이런 요인이 만시를 서서히 애도시의 주류의 위치로 밀어올린 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

This study explores the aspects and characteristics of myeongsi (銘詩) and mansi (挽詩), two poetry styles in the late Goryeo dynasty, from the perspective of mourning poetry and examines the issue of their genre correlations.
In the late Goryeo dynasty, a number of myeongsi of epitaphs were written and mansi writing was also on the rise. The two styles had commonalities, such as being written after death events and having condolences as a basic property. However, they have different layers of condolences and are in contrast with each other in terms of the perception and image of death. Myeongsi deal with and mainly admires the dead in the public realm, while mansi tell of the dead in a range covering the public realm and personal relationships and focus on the grief of the living. The time of myeongsi is permanent and future-oriented, and its vocabulary and tone are confident and dignified, showing the spirit of ascent. On the other hand, the time of mansi stays and hesitates in the present and its vocabulary and tone tend to be gloomy and descending.
The two styles are in contrast to each other in terms of the perception and image of death, as well. Graves and the afterlife are often mentioned in myeongsi, while words related to funeral rituals or funerals frequently appear in mansi. Myeongsi’s view of the world is characterized by accepting but trying to overcome death with efforts that can be made in the realm of humans, such as reputation, feat, descendants and the rules and principles of the sincerity (誠). Mansi are characterized by the expression of futility and despair as to the separation between life and death and a finite life in the face of death and hold a relatively free view of afterlife, such as Taoism.
The two styles were in a complementary relationship by playing their respective roles as mourning poems. But the boundary between their respective roles became less clear in the late Goryeo dynasty. This could be the results of such factors as the establishment of funeral rites, the decline of the epitaph culture, and changes in mansi itself, including change into a three-poem series (三首連章体), and the growth of authors’ consciousness. These factors are assumed to have gradually elevated mansi to the mainstream position of mourning poetry.
