14면 주사위를 통해 본 신라 귀족의 놀이문화 (Recreation culture of the Silla aristocracy seen through 14-faceted dice)

초록

신라귀족들은 어떤 사교모임이 있었으며, 어떻게 친교를 유지했을까? 1975년에 신라왕조 동궁전의 연못인 안압지에서 발굴된 14면 주사위는 이런 질문을 또다시 수면위에 떠오르게 했다. 이 주사위는 세간에 많이 회자되어 잘 알려져 있으나, 실상은 이에 관한 본격적인 논문도 없고, 그에 관한 단편적 서술도 연구자에 따라 각기 다르게 제시되어 있다. 그러나 14면 주사위은 그 형태와 내용면에 있어서는 세계에 유례가 없는 주사위이다.
본고는 이 유물이 발굴된 이후 지난 35년간 14면 주사위에 관해 언급된 모든 글들을 분석했다. 그리고 그 용도를 추적하면서, 지금 혼용되고 있는 ‘주령구’와 ‘주사위’라는 명칭의 타당성을 검토했다. 그리고 이 주사위가 사용되었을 때의 놀이 현장을 안압지에서 출토된 유물과 신라의 풍습 등을 통하여 고찰해 보았다.
14면 주사위가 언급되어 있는 글은 인문계통에서 14곳, 그리고 사회과학 및 자연과학 계통으로 분류될 수 있는 논문 7편이 확인된다. 이중, 『안압지 발굴조사 보고서』에 게재된 김택규의 글이 주사위에 관해서 첫 번째로 발표된 글임과 동시에, 가장 많은 해석을 시도한 글이었다. 그의 뒤를 이어 이기동이 14면 주사위로 사회발전단계를 진단해 내려고 시도했으며, 고경희 등의 단계에 이르러 酒令具라는 이름이 혼용되기 시작했다. 한편, 자연과학계통에서는 이 14면체의 출현확률 조사와, 제작방법 규명작업 및 수학훈련 교재개발 등을 시도했다. 또한 관광분야에서 관광기념품 개발 등의 주제와 관련하여 이를 다루었다. 그 결과 이 주사위는 각각 다른 모양의 14면을 가지고 있지만, 각면이 나올 확률이 일정하다는 결과를 얻었고, 이를 통하여 이 신라시대의 주사위는 고도의 기술로 만들어진 것임을 입증하였다.
결국, 이 주사위는 그 유물 자체의 중요성과 대중의 관심에도 불구하고, 명칭이나 사용 용도나 내용 등에 대하여 학계의 합의를 보지 못하고 있다. 그것은 아마도 이 유물이 보존처리과정에서 불타 버리고 지금은 복제품만 있기 때문에, 학계에서는 이에 관한 본격적인 연구를 꺼려했던 까닭이었다고 생각된다.
본고는 우선, 일반적으로 사용된 ‘주령구’ 또는 ‘주사위’라는 그 명칭의 타당성을 검토했다. 그 결과 이를 주사위라는 명칭으로 확정하고자 했다. 그리고 이 주사위가 놀이 자체를 위한 것인지, 아니면 본격적인 놀이 다음에 벌칙을 위한 도구인지를 검토하여 후자의 것으로 비정했다. 즉, 酒令이란 중국의 酒宴에서 술마시는 규칙 겸 놀이를 만들고 지키는 것인데, 이에는 여러 형식이 있다. 따라서 이 목제 유물을 주령구라고 했을 때, 그것은 유물의 정확한 이름이 되기 어렵다. 또한 14면 주사위는 주령구라기 보다는, 특정 놀이에 부수된 벌칙 도구라고 생각된다. 더 정확한 사실이 드러날 때까지는 이 유물의 명칭을 ‘14면 목제 주사위’라고 하는 편이 옳겠다.
한편, 이 14면 목제 주사위의 각면에 쓰여진 내용과 唐代 성행했던 酒令을 비교할 때, 또 포석정의 流觴曲水나 신라사회의 시짓기 등 귀족들의 생활태도로 미루어 보면, 신라귀족 사회는 文字令을 주로 했던 듯하다. 또, 14개 벌칙을 통해 볼 때, 신라의 주연은 음주가무와 문장 창작이 어우러진 고급 잔치였다. 이곳에는 물론 여성도 참여했다. 그리고 당시 술이 곡주인만큼 술잔도 주발처럼 컸을 것이다. 안압지 연못에서 나온 벼루, 주발, 등잔 등은 바로 이때의 생활용구였을 것이다.

영어초록

What kind of social gatherings did the Silla aristocracy have and how did they foster the relationships?This question was raised again when a 14-faceted dice was excavated from Anapji, a pond in Donggungjeon(東宮殿) in 1975. The dice was talked about a lot, however, in reality there was not a single thesis on it, and its interpretations also varied. However, the shape of the dice is unique ever reported, and high-technology was applied to it in order that each 14 numbers turned out evenly.
In this article, every documents and materials on the 14-faceted dice which were published for the last 35 years right after excavation were analyzed. In this process I referred to fourteen papers of humanities and seven thesis of social science and natural science which mentioned this dice. Among these 14 papers of humanities, Kim Taek-gyu's article which was carried in 『Anapji excavation research report』 was the first and the most variously interpreted one. And then, Lee Gi-dong tried to decide a social development stage with 14-faceted dice rather than to interpret the dice itself. The rest of the humanities papers only introduced the dice. Interestingly, natural science papers tried to calculate the probability of the 14 facets, to find out how it was made and to develope a textbook for how to learn mathematics. From the tourism perspective how to create souvenir was dealt with.
As we know, the historic circle did not attempt to decide or confirm a name, usage or content of this dice. It would be because the dice was burn out in the preservation process and only its replica remains now, Scholars were reluctant to study it.
In this article I first evaluate the validity of the generally used name ‘Juryeonggu(酒令具, tool for dirinking manner)’ or ‘Dice’, and defined it as dice. Also, I examined whether this dice was for game only or for penalty for those who lost the game, and confirmed its purpose as the latter. And then, by referring to other artifacts excavated from Anapji(雁鴨池), I tried to reproduce a party scene at that time.
In other words, Juryeong was a Chinese drinking manner as well as a game in a pub, and there were a variety of types. Therefore, when it is called as Juryeonggu, it is not clear to be a name of relic. Another one was that the Silla aristocrats seemed to play letter Juryeong(文字令). It is appropriate to be considered as part of aristocratic life of the Oriental society including Yusanggoksu(流觴曲水) in Poseokjeong(鮑石亭) or writing a poem in the Silla society. In this regard, the 14-faceted dice is regarded as a penalty tool rather than Juryeongju.
Seen from the 14 different penalties, feast in the Silla society was a sophisticated one with drinking, dancing and writing poems. Women also attended it. And since they drank grain wine, glasses must have been large like bowl. Ink stones, bowls and lamps excavated from Anapji pond must be household items in those days.
Finding out the Silla aristocrats' social life and leisure pattern is a very important task to understand the ancient society. So far, however, the existing studies on recreation culture limited to figuring out types of games or interpreting religious aspect of games. Therefore, this paper makes an attempt to newly interpret the aristocrats' living style focused on the 14-faceted dice. I might be gone too far while I was trying to interpret the meaning of the dice actively, and because it was excavated a long times ago. I hope that continuous studies on ancient people's living style accumulate and supplement the study on this dice.
