황석영 『오래된 정원』에 나타난 음식 먹기와 환대의 윤리학 (Eating Food and The Ethics of Hospitality in Hwang Seok-young’s Old Garden)

초록

황석영의 『오래된 정원』은 음식과 음식 먹기에 관한 서사를 압도적인 빈도와 비율로 다루는 작품이다. 이 문제를 분석하기 위해서는 음식 먹기에 대한 황석영의 사상을 참고할 수 있다. 그는 종종 자기 자신이 요리한 음식을 사람들에게 제공하여 함께 맛있게 먹는 것을 즐거워한다고 밝혀왔다. 또 『오래된 정원』 이후 발표된 여러 작품들의 윤리적 주제도 고려할 수 있는바, 그와 관련지어 『오래된 정원』에 나타난 음식 먹기의 양상과 그 의미를 해석해볼 필요가 있다. 『오래된 정원』의 주요인물이 음식을 먹는 장면은 작품 전체를 통틀어 총 62회 등장한다. 이 작품에서 적대적인 공동 식사란 찾을 수 없고 모든 음식 먹기가 상호호혜적인 인간관계를 중심으로 전개된다. 이러한 음식 함께 먹기의 지속적이고 압도적인 장면화는 식사행위가 갖는 관계성을 부각시키고 나아가 그러한 관계성이 작품의 형식으로까지 연결될 수 있도록 해준다. 즉 관계 중심의 서사 구조와 형식에 가닿는 것이다. 또한 한윤희가 남긴 노트와 편지에는 숱하게 많았던 타인들과의 식사가 기록되어 있다. 그리고 그 장면을 읽어나가는 오현우는 점차 사회적 일상으로 되돌아올 수 있는 방법적 계기를 갖게 된다. 상호호혜적 관계 속에서의 음식 먹기에 대한 기억의 소환 혹은 그 장면에 대한 읽기는 탈경계화된 대화적 주체로 회복 또는 성장할 수 있도록 해주는 매개 장치가 되는 것이다. 나아가 이 작품에는 음식 먹기라는 현상을 둘러싸고 오현우와 한윤희가 식욕을 강하게 느끼는 대목이 특히 자주 나오며, 두 사람 외에 다른 주변 인물들에게서도 이러한 강한 식욕 현상은 사람을 만났을 때 자주 나타난다. 이 작품 전체를 관통하여 식욕은 생명적 존재로서의 능동적인 자각과 함께 타자와 공존하는 사회적 존재로서의 주체적인 참여자가 되고자 하는 길목에서 만나게 되는 주된 욕망이다. 그런데 그 식욕에 따른 음식 먹기는 일부 고독한 인물의 상황을 제외하고 대부분 음식을 함께 먹는 것으로 그려진다. 이 점이 바로 황석영다운 균형감각의 결과인데, 본질적으로 같은 음식을 먹는다는 것은 그것은 함께 먹는 자들의 몸에 필요한 영양분을 공유하는 일이고 삶의 방식과 세계를 드러내고 함께 공유하는 일이다. 이러한 음식 먹기에 나타난 주체들의 태도는 갈뫼에서 한윤희가 오현우에게 보인 무조건적 환대와도 맞물리며, 그러한 성격을 내포하는 음식 먹기라는 기억의 소환은 바로 특별한 조건적 환대가 아닌 무조건적 환대의 이념을 지향할 수 있도록 해준다고 해석할 수 있다. 황석영의 『오래된 정원』은 작가가 이전까지 보여준 현실에 대한 리얼리즘적 태도의 소설미학이 보다 심층적인 윤리적인 내용과 형식으로 거듭날 수 있는 이정표 같은 역할을 개척한 작품이라 평가할 수 있다. 특히 환대의 윤리 차원에서 황석영의 소설 세계가 질적 전환을 이룩하는 데 중요한 모멘텀을 마련한 작품이라 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Hwang Seok-young’s novel Old Garden is a work that deals with the narrative of eating food in overwhelming frequency and proportion. To analyze this problem, we can refer to Hwang Seok-young’s idea of eating food. He has often sad that he enjoys eating deliciously together by serving people his own cooking. In addition, it is necessary to interpret the aspects of eating food and its meaning in Old Garden, as ethical themes in various works published following Old Garden. The scenes where the main characters in Old Garden eat foods appear 62 times throughout the work. In this work, there is no hostile communal meal, and all eating foods shows us mutually beneficial human relationships. This continuous and overwhelming scene of eating foods together highlights the relationship of eating behavior, and furthermore, such relationships can be connected to the form of this work. In other words, it is deeply involved on the narrative structure and form centered on relationships. In addition, the notes and letters left by Han Yoon-hee recorded many scenes of eating foods with others. And the main character Oh Hyun-woo, who reads the scenes, gradually has a methodical opportunity to return to social life. Summoning memories of eating foods in a mutually beneficial relationship or reading the scenes is a mediating device that allows recovery or growth as a dialogic subject through deterritorialization. Furthermore, in this work, there are particularly frequent scenes in which Oh Hyun-woo and Han Yoon-hee feel strongly the appetite of eating food, and this strong appetite often appears in other people besides the two main characters. Throughout this work, the appetite is the main desire to be an active awareness as a living being and to become a subjective participant as a social being coexisting with others. However, eating foods according to the appetite is mostly represented as eating foods together, except for lonely situation. This is the result of Hwang Seok-young’s sense of balance, and eating the same food together is essentially sharing the nutrients necessary for the bodies of those who eat together, and the way of life and the world together. It is also the reason why simple meals are the main scenes. This scene of eating food and the attitude of the subjects are also in line with Han Yoon-hee’s attitude of unconditional hospitality to Oh Hyun-woo in Galmoe. And it allows us to interpret that summoning the memory of eating foods reveals the main ideology of unconditional hospitality, not special conditional hospitality. Based on the results reviewed above, Hwang Seok-young’s Old Garden can be evaluated as a work that shows the role like a milestone in which the novelsist’s realistic attitude toward reality can be reborn as more in-depth ethical content and form. In particular, it can be evaluated as a work that shows the important momentum for Hwang Seok-young’s novel world to achieve a qualitative transition in terms of hospitality ethics.
