초록

이 글은 스토리테마파크 구축에 활용된 의병일기를 소개하고, 의병활동 등과 관련한 내용을 정리한 것이다. 2015년은 을미사변이 일어난 지 120년이 되는 해이다. 아울러 을미의병 120주년이 되는 해이기도 한다. 한국국학진흥원에서는 「2015년도 스토리테마파크」 구축 자료로 그동안 정리된 의병 일기 자료를 대상으로 이야기 소재를 추출하였다. 한말 의병전쟁에 관해서는 그동안 다양한 형태와 내용의 수많은 자료가 발굴되고, 이용되어 왔다. 의병전쟁 관련 자료들을 정리, 편찬한 다양한 형태의 자료집도 의병전쟁 연구의 수준과 정도에 상응하여 그동안 꾸준하게 발간되어 왔다. 한말 의병전쟁에 관한 자료는 의병 자신들과 그 관련 인사들이 남긴 의병측자료와 의병을 탄압하였던 일제측(대한제국 정부측 포함) 자료 등 크게 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 의병을 탄압한 일제측의 방대하고도 체계적인 자료 역시 의병전쟁의 성격과 내용을 이해하는 데 유용한 가치를 지니고 있음을 부인할 수는 없다. 하지만 의병측이 남기 1차 자료가 절대적인 사료적 가치를 지니고 있음은 말할 나위가 없다.
한국사에서 의병은 국가와 민족이 위급할 때마다 일어났다. 그 중에서 가장 대표적인 것이 임진왜란을 극복하기 위해 일어난 임란의병과 일제의 무력 침략에 반대하여 일어난 한말의병이다. 임란의병과 한말의병은 외세의 침략에 대응하여 백성들이 ‘의義’를 실천하기 위해 전개한 무력투쟁이었다. 이들이 택한 의병전쟁은 제국주의 침략에 맞서는 투쟁이다. 의병전쟁은 민족공동체가 소중히 생각하여 고귀한 이상을 실현하기 위해 자기 자신을 기꺼이 바치거나 혹은 생명을 내걸고 총칼로 불의한 대상을 직접 제거하려는 의거이다.
한말 의병전쟁을 주도한 유생들과 병사로 참여한 백성들은 결국 옳은 일을 하고 있다는 생각 때문에 투쟁하였다. 그 옳은 일을 하고 있다는 생각이 유생이나 병사들에게는 위정척사衛正斥邪였고, 충의정신忠義精神이었다. 국가가 위기에 처했을 때에 정부가 시키지 않아도 흔연히 일어나 자기의 모든 것을 바쳐 싸우려는 우국충정憂國哀情이 그 정신이었다. 또 이를 통하여 국가의 주권을 지키고, 민족의 위신을 되찾는 것이 그 목표였다. 그들이 국가 멸망의 위기 상황 속에서 사회적 지위에 상응하는 도덕적 책무를 성실히 이행해 나갔으며, 그것은 바로 이들의 본분에 충실한 삶을 선택했기 때문이다. 의병전쟁은 대의명분과 의리정신을 지키고 싶다는 명분 그리고 부끄러운 삶을 살지 않겠다는 선비정신과 노블레스 오블리주의 실천이 담겨져 있었던 것이다. 한말 의병전쟁은 성공과 실패의 여부보다는 어디까지나 그 정신과 목표에 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This study has introduced volunteer army journals that were used to build up a story theme park and has also organized the contents concerning volunteer army operations. The year 2015 is the 120th anniversary of the Eulmi Sabyeon (the Affair of Murdering Queen Myeongseong in 1895, the year of Eulmi), and also the 120th anniversary of organizing the Eulmi Volunteer Army in 1895. The Advanced Center for Korean Studies has extracted story subjects from the materials of volunteer army journals that have been organized to build up the 2015 Story Theme Park. Numerous materials in various forms and with various contents regarding the struggles of volunteer armies in the late Joseon Dynasty prior to the Japanese Occupation were found and utilized. These diverse types of materials concerning battles of volunteer armies were organized, compiled, and published according to the level and extent of research on battles of volunteer armies. The materials concerning operations of volunteer armies in the late Joseon Dynasty prior to the Japanese Occupation are divided into two types: one made by volunteer soldiers and other people concerned with volunteer armies and the other left by Japanese people who opposed and repressed volunteer armies and their operations. There is no denying that the second type of vast and systematic materials by Japanese people is very useful for understanding the characteristics and contents of volunteer armies in Korea. However, it is needless to say that the first type of materials by volunteer armies has absolute value for research on history.
Volunteer armies developed whenever the nation was in crisis in Korean history. The most representative were the volunteer armies that came about to overcome the invasion by the Japanese in 1592, Imjin Waeran, and the volunteer armies in the late Joseon Dynasty prior to the Japanese Occupation to oppose the Japanese invasion by military force. Imran volunteer armies in the late 16th century and volunteer armies in the late Joseon Dynasty prior to the Japanese Occupation conducted military struggles to respond to foreign invasions and righteously acted on the part of civilians. Civilian volunteer army battles were fought against imperial invasions. These volunteers struggled to realize the righteous and noble ideals that were cherished by the national community and removed unjust opponents with military force by willingly sacrificing themselves at the risk of losing their lives. The class that led these volunteer army struggles demonstrated aspects of the Confucian National Movement.
Confucian scholars who led volunteer armies and general civilians who participated in battles as volunteer soldiers fought under the notion of justice. Such an idea led them to support righteousness and drive out wickedness with patriotism and loyalty. When the nation was in crisis, they were willing to arise and dedicate themselves to fighting against foreign invasion with concern about national security. Their purpose was to maintain national sovereignty and regain national dignity. They faithfully did their moral duty corresponding to their social status in a national crisis. This was possible because they chose to live properly performing their roles. These volunteer army battles demonstrated their grand cause of being faithful and loyal, the righteous mind of the classical scholar, and the practices of noblesse oblige. The importance of the spirit and aim of the volunteer army battles in the late Joseon Dynasty prior to the Japanese Occupation, rather than their success or failure, still holds meaning today.
