조선 말 청화백자에 장식된 외국산 직물 문양의 연원과 유입과정 (Origin and Influx of Foreign Fabric Patterns in the Blue and White Porcelain in the Late Joseon Period)

초록

조선 말 19세기경 제작된 청화백자의 문양 장식 가운데 외국산 직물 문양으로 보이는 것이 있다. 만자문, 수파문, 귀갑문, 동전문 등 여러 기하학 패턴이 그러하다. 이들 직물 문양은 각종 백자의 넓고 편평한 기면 위나 보조문양대의 위치에 시문되었다. 그런데 이와 유사한 각종 직물 문양을 중국과 일본, 유럽 등 외국 도자에서도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있어 조선 말 청화백자에 나타난 각종 직물 문양은 외부와의 교류로 새롭게 나타난 외래 요소로 보여진다.
본고에서는 이들의 연원과 전파 과정을 살피기 위해 먼저 중국에서 직물 패턴이 각종 공예품에 등장하기까지의 과정을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 직물 패턴이 그려진 화보나 경전이 널리 유통되면서 각종 공예품 제작에 참고가 되었을 가능성을 확인했다. 또 제작자가 지역 간에 이동하거나 시대에 따라 생산 체제가 변화되며 문양이 전파되었을 가능성도 확인했다. 한편, 명·청대 제작된 수출용 자기에 각종 직물 문양이 두드러지게 나타나는 점이 주목되었다. 경덕진에서 유럽 수출용으로 제작된 크락자기와 일본 수출용으로 제작된 오채자기 및 숀즈이[祥瑞]에 두드러졌는데, 이러한 현상은 외부 수요자의 취향과 결부된 것으로 보였다.
마지막으로 조선 말 청화백자에 나타나는 직물 문양의 계통을 추적했다. 실물 자료의 비교 검토를 통해 조선 말에 동시대 일본 도자의 장식 경향이 유입되었을 가능성을 확인했다. 더불어 16세기 이후 중국과 일본의 도자 교류로 형성된 요소들이 일본에서 지속적으로 모방, 재창조 되다가, 차후 19세기경 조선에 유입되었을 가능성도 확인했다. 이 글은 직물문양을 통해 조선 말기 백자에 나타나는 외래 양식의 다양한 계통을 알아본 것에 의의가 있다. 아울러 조선 말 청화백자를 동아시아 도자교류사적 관점에서 논의함으로서 동아시아 도자사에서 조선 백자가 가지는 위치를 확인해 봄에 의의를 두고 있다.

영어초록

Among the patterns of blue and white porcelains fabricated in the late Joseon dynasty around the 19th century, there are some foreign fabric patterns such as swaskika, wave, hexagonal, and coin patterns. These fabric patterns usually appear on the wide and flat surface of various white porcelains or in the positions of supplementary patterns. They can be easily found in foreign ceramics such as China, Japan, and Europe. Therefore, various kinds of textile patterns shown in white porcelain from the Joseon period are seen as foreign elements newly adopted from exchange with other cultures in the ceramic field. To examine their origins and transmission process, research in this paper focuses first on the fabric patterns found in various Chinese crafts. It has been confirmed that fabric patterns were widely circulated in illustrations and scriptures, and became reference to produce various artifacts. It has also confirmed the possibility that the producers’ mobility from one place to another and change in the production mode in accordance with the times spurred the spread of the patterns.
On the other hand, it has been noted that various patterns of fabrics are prominently displayed on porcelains produced for export in the Ming and Qing periods. They are often found in porcelains made at Jingdezhen for export to Europe and Japan, such as Kraak, wucaiciqi(五彩瓷器) and shonzui porcelain(祥瑞瓷), implying their association with the taste of outside consumers. Particularly, the circle of the Japanese tea ceremony, which favored Chinese-made fabrics, seemed to be able to reflect their taste of patterns in porcelain when they placed a large amount of ceramics order to China.
Finally, the textile patterns have been traced in the Joseon blue and white porcelain. A comparative study of actual materials confirms the possible influence of the decorational trend of Japanese ceramics in the late Joseon period. It also confirms that the elements formed by exchanges in ceramics between China and Japan after the 16th century continued to be imitated and recreated in Japan, which might have then flown into Korea during the 19th century. This paper has significance in understanding through the fabric patterns various schemes of foreign style appearing in white porcelain at the end of the Joseon dynasty. It is also meaningful for identifying the status of the Joseon blue and white porcelain in the East Asian ceramic history by addressing it from the viewpoint of the history of ceramic exchange in East Asia.
