초록

Since photography became one of the leading art media in 1970s, the concept
of absence is regarded to replace the meaning of presence. As photography
expresses the existing objects in real life, it has differentiated itself
from that of traditional art making. After Walter Benjamin, a number of art
historians believe that the mechanical reproduction undoes the‘aura’
which was constructed by the specific time and space of the original art
piece by the artist. Following the concept of‘original-less,’‘authorless,’
the appropriation art has been widely recognized by the artists.
Among them, Richard Prince, is the one of the most well known artists,
who has re-photographed or painted the everyday images including advertisements,
pulp fictions, jokes, and those of mess media.
Prince began working as the advertisement editor in Time-Life company,
interested in the fabrication, fiction, and the banality in the massmedia.
<Marlboro Cowboy> series, the famous advertisement, has been
re-photographed by Prince as examining the prototype between the material
desire and the cliché of expression.
After Duchamp, who borrowed ready-made objects and other wellknown
art works, Prince is free to work on the industrialized products.
However, Prince’s photos, changed in either sizes or colors of figures,
could hardly make difference enough to recreate the meaning of the original
photos. Prince would rather take advantages from the original pieces;
the composition, light, movement, color, landscape, and more. The post-
modern art theorists continue to advocate Prince upon either Barthes’or
Foucault’s theories of an author,
The idea that an author is the major figure in the interpretation of the
art work has been challenged both by Barthes and Foucault. Foucault suggests
that the meaning of author should be defined based upon whether he
can form the discourse.
Richard Prince utilized other’s works under the umbrella of the artistic
convention, appropriation. He has been regarded as the practitioner of the
post-modern theories and the author under the post-structuralists’theory.
However, Prince utilizes the author’s power which he intends to de-construct,
and he breaches the copyright of the original photographer, demonstrating
the dilemma of this post-modern art theory of‘author.’
