현행 「한글 맞춤법」 준말 규정에 대한 일고 (A study on the abbreviation rules for the current 『Hangeul Matchumbeop(1988)』)

This paper aims to review the abbreviation rules in the current “Hangeul Matchumbeop”(한글맞춤법, 1988) and to highlight the problems associated with these rules and to also propose a road-map to correct and improve them. To this end, Chapter 2 examines the evolutionary process up to the current “Hangeul Matchumbeop(한글맞춤법, 1988)” rules. The abbreviation notation first appeared as a separate code from the “Hangeul Matchumbeop Tongiran”(한글마춤법 통일안, 1933) and later, the revision of the rules was discussed in the “Hangeul Matchumbeop revision draft”(한글맞춤법 개정 시안, 1978) conducted by the Ministry of Education which led to the current regulations.
In Chapter 3, each regulation was reviewed to examine the aptness of the abbreviation rules of the current “Hangeul Matchumbeop”(한글맞춤법, 1988). In particular, 2,526 abbreviated head-words listed as head-words in the “Pyojun-Gugeo-Daesajeon”(표준국어대사전) under the current code were compared. Thereafter the appropriateness of the rules was reviewed in a direction in which all the abbreviation-related head-words could be explained, and the direction of revision was briefly considered.
In Chapter 4, we synthesized the current body of data and presented the revised abbreviation rules proposed by this study. The most important thing to consider in the revision process is practicality and conciseness. Therefore, while there are 9 abbreviations in the “Hangeul Matchumbeop”(한글맞춤법, 1988), in this study, 2 more were added and a total of 11 abbreviations were proposed. In addition to the two newly added provisions, the existing rules were also revised in terms of detail by changing the attached provisions or changing the examples. Finally, Chapter 5 summarizes this study. This study is meaningful in that it reveals the problems of the abbreviation rules, which have not been treated as important in studies related to Korean spelling, and in that it suggests the direction for further revision.
