『겨레말 큰사전』의 성격과 과제 (The Character and Task of Gyeoremal Keunsajeon)

초록

남과 북의 사전 편찬자들이 공동으로 편찬하고 있는 『겨레말 큰사전』은 남북통일을 전후하여 상대방의 언어와 사회 문화를 이해하는 데에 꼭 필요한 사전이다. 또한, 이 사전은 남쪽과 북쪽 및 해외 동포의 우리말도 포함하여 민족어 사전의 성격을 갖는다.
이 사전은 기존 사전에서 고른 25만 개에, 새 어휘 10만 개를 포함하여 30여 만 개의 올림말을 계획하는데, 남과 북에서 나누어 집필한 뜻풀이 내용을 서로 교차 검토하여 각 올림말 별로 최종 합의안을 만든다. 뜻풀이에는 남과 북, 해외에서 쓰이는 의미와 용례를 모두 포함하며, 이념이나 정치적 가치를 배제한다. 이 사전만을 위한 남북통일 표기 형태나 문법 체계를 채택한 것도 특징이다. 남북의 편찬자들은 서로를 이해하며 논의를 하여 협의안에 상당한 진전이 있지만, 두음법칙 적용 등 아직도 해결해야 할 과제들도 적지 않다.
남과 북으로 불행하게 나뉘어 각자 변화해 온 우리 언어는 한편, 더욱 다양하고 풍부한 언어 모습으로 발전했다고도 볼 수 있다. 이러한 우리말을 미래지향적으로 통합 통일하여, 남과 북에서 모두 사용하는 민족어의 총화를 거두는 훌륭한 사전을 만들어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Gyeoremal Keunsajeon is the dictionary essential for South and North Korean to understand each other's languages and sociocultural systems considering the unification of the two Koreas, and lexicographers of the two Koreas have worked together to compile it for a while. Furthermore, the dictionary is thought of as a national language dictionary since it includes words used by Koreans abroad as well as words used in South and North Korea.
The dictionary is planned to contain 300 thousand lemmas which include 100 thousand new vocabularies added to 250 thousand words chosen from several existing dictionaries, and the lexicographers of South and North Korea have division of labor to write definitions of lemmas and later will examine each others' work to make the final version of them. Even though the definition of lemmas includes meanings and examples used by Koreans living in the two Koreas and foreign countries as well, ideological and political value is totally excluded from it, The dictionary is very unique in that it follows unified orthogra phic and grammatical system which resulted from the compromise between the two Koreas. Although the South and North Korean lexicographers reached to an agreement on several issues based on understanding and concession, a few issues including the spelling rule for the initial sound of a syllable remain unsettled and still wait for consensus.
It seems that the language change which took place indepen dently in South and North Korea has provided enrichment and diversity to the Korean language. Thus, for the bright future of our national language, there is an urgent need to make an excellent dictionary to collect the essence of the Korean language and to be used by Koreans in the whole world.
