『자기만의 방』과 『여인무사』를 통해 본 「뮬란」의 여성 주체 번역 실천 : 주디스 버틀러의 문화 번역에 나타난 정치와 윤리의 가능성 (The Female Subject in Mulan through A Room of One's Own and The Woman Warrior : the Overlapping Between Politics and Ethics in Judith Butler's Cultural Translation)

이 논문은 버틀러의 문화번역에 나오는 ‘경쟁하는 보편성’과 ‘수행적 모순’의 중요성을 고찰하고 영국 여성작가 버지니아 울프의 『자기만의 방』(1929)과 중국계 미국 여성작가 맥신 홍 킹스턴의 『여인 무사』(1976)을 경유해 디즈니 애니메이션 「뮬란」(1998)에 나타난 보편 여성 주체에 대한 문화번역의 정치성과 윤리성의 접합 가능성을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 울프가 여성 해방의 조건으로 제시했던 ‘돈’과 ‘방’의 의미를 중심으로 근대적 주체로서의 여성의 인권에 관한 보편적 주장의 의미와 힘이 형성되는 이 세 텍스트의 수사적이고 문화적인 맥락에서 버틀러의 문화번역 논의를 탐구하고자 한다. 버틀러에 따르면 우선 보편성에 대한 어떤 주장도 문화적 규범과 별개로 발생할 수 없으며, 국제적인 장을 구성하는 경합하는 규범들의 배열을 생각한다면 그 즉시 문화번역을 요구하지 않고는 보편성 주장은 이루어질 수 없다. 이런 ‘경쟁하는 보편성’에 대한 번역 없이는 보편성의 개념 자체가 자신이 넘는다고 주장하는 언어적, 문화적 경계를 넘을 수 없다. 경쟁하며 중첩되는 보편주의를 판정하고 구성하는 가운데 다문화주의의 정치성은 번역의 정치로 이해될 수 있다. 두 번째로 특수성의 보편성으로의 동화는 그 흔적, 즉 동화불가능한 잔여물을 남기는데 이것이 보편성을 스스로에게 유령적이게 만든다. 문화번역의 과제는 바로 이런 보편성안의 유령 같은 특수성이라는 ‘수행적 모순’을 필요로 하며 내부에서 보편자로 말할 권한이 없지만 그 용어를 주장하는 사람에게 목소리를 주는 것이다. 번역이 헤게모니 투쟁이 되기 위해서는 배제되고 주변화된 이들이 지배담론 안에서 보편성을 주장하고 지배 담론이 외래 어휘를 자국어 사전에 수용하면서 지배 담론 자체가 변화해야 할 것이다. 『자기만의 방』과 『여인 무사』를 통해 「뮬란」에 재현된 ‘돈’과 ‘방’의 변화된 문화 번역은 ‘경쟁하는 보편성’과 ‘수행적 모순’의 관점에서 정치학과 윤리학을 연결할 가능성을 밝힐 수 있다. 버틀러의 문화번역은 창의적 틈새와 격렬한 운동으로 경쟁하는 보편성을 다시 무대화하여 규제적 규범과 법을 수행적으로 재의미화하고 재발화할 수 있다. 번역의 틈새는 나의 외부에 있는 것과의 접촉, 즉 탈아적 관계성의 매개이자 한 언어가 다른 언어를 만나 타자와의 접촉이 발생하는 윤리적 장면이다.

영어초록

This study examines the significance of 'competing universalities' and 'constitutive contradiction' in Judith Butler's 'cultural translation' and explores the possibility of overlapping between politics and ethics of the cultural translation in the female subject of Disney's animated feature Mulan(1998) through A Room of One's Own(1929) by Virginia Woolf and The Woman Warrior(1976) by Maxine Hong Kingston. For this it investigates the task of Butler's cultural translation in the various rhetorical and cultural contexts of the three texts in which the meaning and force of universal claims of human rights of women as modern subjects are made, focused on the meaning of 'money' and 'a room' that Woolf suggested as requirements of women's liberation. According to Judith Butler, no assertion of universality takes place apart from a cultural norm and no assertion can be made without at once requiring a cultural translation given the array of contesting norms that constitute the international field above all things. Without the translation of 'competing universalities', the very concept of universality cannot cross the linguistic and cultural borders it claims to be able to cross. The politics of multiculturalism could be understood as a politics of translation in the service of adjudicating and composing a movement of competing and overlapping universalities. Secondly, assimilation of the particular into the universal leaves its trace, an unassimilable remainer, which renders universality ghostly to itself. The task of cultual translation is one that necessitated precisely by the 'performative contradiction' of the ghostly particular, the spectral doubling in the universal that takes place when one with no authorization to speak within and as the universal nevertheless lays claims to the terms. For the translation to be in the service of struggling for hegemony, the dominant discourse will have to alter by virtue of claiming universalities of excluded and marginalized particular ones in the discourse, admitting the foreign vocabulary into its main lexicon, and changing the dominant discourse itself. Transformed cultural translation of 'money' and 'a room' represented in Mulan through A Room of One's Own and The Woman Warrior can shed light on the possibility of connecting the politics and ethics and broaden the horizon of cultural translation in terms of 'competing universalities' and 'performative contradiction'. By creative chasms and violent shuttling, Butler's cultural translation can restage competing universalities and lead to performative re-signification and re-articulation of regulatory norms and laws. The chasm in translation can become the condition of contact with what is outside me, the vehicle for an ec-static relationality and the ethical scene where one language meets another and contact with alterity happens.
