칼라차크라 만다라에 대한 문헌학적, 도상학적, 해석학적 試論 (Some Remarks on the Kālacakramaṇḍala from the Philological, Iconographical, Hermeneutical Perspectives)

본 논문은 수백 종의 불교만다라들 중에서도 가장 독창적이며 웅대하다고할 수 있는 칼라차크라 만다라에 대해 종래의 형이상학적 해석을 지양하고,문헌학적, 도상학적, 해석학적 방법을 단계적으로 시도한 試論이다. 종래의형이상학적 해석은 만다라를 그 의례 행위인 만다라 의례들과 분리시켜, 전통적으로 이해되어온 만다라의 참된 의미를 왜곡하고 있다. 특히 만다라의상징주의에 근거하여 실제의 수행과 분리된 이론에 치우치는 경향이 있다.
이와는 대조적으로 만다라에 대한 문헌학적, 도상학적, 해석학적 방법은 만다라를 만다라 플러스 만다라 의례라는 인식에서 출발하여, 인도 후기밀교의3대 수행법에 그 방법론을 대응시키고 있다. 즉 문헌학적 방법은 ‘통과의례(abhiṣeka)', 도상학적 방법은 ’생성의 단계(utpattikrama)', 해석학적 방법은 ‘완성의 단계(utpannakrama/niṣpannakrama)’에 각각 대응한다고 할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 이러한 방법론을 ’케이스 스터디(a case study)’로 칼라차크라만다라에 적용하고 있다. 이러한 목적을 위해 『칼라차크라 탄트라』(Kālacakratantra)와 그 방대한 주석서인『비말라프라바』(Vimalaprabhā)이외에 아바야카라굽타의 『금강의 화환』(Vajrāvalī)의 칼라차크라 만다라에 대한부분과『완성된 요가의 화환』(Niṣpannayogāvalī)의 마지막 장인 제 26장이 제1차 자료들로 사용된다.

영어초록

This paper includes some remarks on the Kālacakramaṇḍala, which is probably the most creative and complicated Buddhist maṇḍala ever created. Having jettisoned the previous theoretical interpretations of the maṇḍala, they present the philological, iconographical, and hermeneutical methods for understanding the true meaning of the maṇḍala instead. Most of theoretical interpretations of the maṇḍala tend to separate the maṇḍala from maṇḍala rituals, and distort its true meaning. In other words, they tend to focus on only theory,neglecting practice, the core of any religion, since they rely on maṇḍala symbolism. It is so interesting that the Kālacakra tradition also created a theoretical Mahāsaṃvaramaṇḍala of 73 deities out of the Cakrasaṃvaramaṇḍala of 62 deities, applying the symbolism of the Kālacakramaṇḍala to it in order to show its superiority to the Saṃvara tradition. The explanation of the Vimalaprabhā on the Mahāsaṃvaramaṇḍala is curiously similar to some theoretical interpretations of the Kālacakramaṇḍala. However, the Mahāsaṃvaramaṇḍala is completely separated from its ritual contexts, and consecration ceremony has never been performed on it.
In contradistinction to the theoretical interpretations of the maṇḍala, the philological, iconographical, and hermeneutical methods start from the realization that maṇḍala amounts to maṇḍala itself and maṇḍala rituals. Accordingly, these three methods correspond to the three fundamental practices of late Indian Tantric Buddhism, viz., the consecration ceremony (abhiṣeka), the creation stage (utpattikrama),and the perfection stage (utpannakrama/niṣpannakrama). This paper applies this methodology to the Kālacakramaṇḍala as a case study. For this purpose, along with the Kālacakratantra and the Vimalaprabhā, its authoritative commentary, Abhayākaragupta's Vajrāvalī and the Niṣpannayogāvalī is also used in this paper as the primary sources.
