이혜구 만당학 성립의 시대적 배경과개인적 경험에 관한 논구 (A Study of Historical Background and Personal Experienceof the Establishment of Mandanghak School)

초록

만당 이혜구는 한국음악학의 초석을 다진 선구자이다. 그의 음악학, 즉 ‘만당학’은 현재까지도 한국음악학계에서 가장 유용한 연구방법론으로 이어지고 있다. 이글에서는 만당학이 정립되는 과정을 20세기 전반의 당대 학계 흐름이라는 ‘역사적 지평’ 또는 ‘텍스트의 지평’과 만당의 개인적 경험을 통한 ‘현재의 지평’ 또는 ‘연구자의 지평’이 어떻게 상호융합의 과정을 거쳐 정립되었는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 만당학의 한계와 향후 국악학의 발전방향을 모색해보았다.
만당학의 과학적․실증주의적 학문성향은 성호 이익의 성호학과 궤를 같이 한다. 성호는 경학자 및 실학자로서 서구문화를 받아들여 개방성․다양성․객관성․경험성을 중시했다. 이런 성호학의 학문성향은 만당학과 궤를 같이 하기에, 만당학 성립의 역사적 지평은 성호학이라 할 수 있다. 만당의 경성제국대학교에 만연하던 비교방법론은 당시 식민지 조선의 근대 학문계에서 널리 유행하던 학풍이었다. 그리고 만당은 이런 비교방법론을 받아들여 그의 첫 학술논문에서 『양금신보』의 4조를 중국 및 서양 악조와 비교하여 분석하였다. 방송인이었던 만당이 첫 번째 학술논문을 쓸 수 있었던 기회를 제공한 다나베 히사오, 다나베의 스승이자 만당의 첫 논문이 수록된 회갑기념논문집의 주인공인 기시베 시게오, 그리고 만당은 제국대학이라는 커넥션을 갖는다. 즉, 만당의 연구자적 지평은 제국대학 시절의 비교방법론과 제국대학 커넥션에 의해 형성된 것이다.
만당학은 귀납적 추론, 실증주의, 비교방법론으로서, 20세기 전반 학문세계를 이끌던 가장 선진적인 학문성향이자 방법론이었다. 그러나 21세기에 만당학의 학문방법론은 유효하지 않다. 포스트모더니즘 세계에서 만당학의 모더니즘적 경향은 딛고 넘어서야 할 연구방법론이다. 만당학이 추구했던 개방성과 과학성은 받아들이고, 서양음악중심적 사고와 지나친 실증주의를 넘어서서 21세기의 한국음악학 연구방법론을 개척해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Lee Hye-ku(1909~2010) was the pioneer of Korean musicology whose academic orientation and methodology, which I term ‘mandanghak’ school, are still regarded as the most effective view in Korean musicology. Lee Hye-ku had no systematic musicological train at all and established his academic methodology by himself. Mandanghak was made both by the academic orientation of the time and Lee Hye-ku’s own persoanl experience. In this paper, I will explore the historical horizon or the textual horizon of the time and present horizon or scholar horizon of Lee Hye-ku’s own experience. I will discover how the two affect the establishement of Mandanghak school.
Lee Hye-ku was born and raised in a prestigious family and is a born Confucianist. His scientific and positivism has transmitted by Seonghohak school established by Yi Yik (1681~ 1763). Yi, a Confucian scholar, admitted Western academism of open mind, diversity view, objectivity, and experientiality. The academic orientation of Seonghohak school has handed down to Lee. In this sense, the historical horizon for the establishement of Mandanghak school was Seonghohak school.
Lee Hye-ku had not followed traditional education system but went to Japanese schools from elementary to college levels. His teacher at the English Literature Department of Kyojo Imperial University was Sato Kiyoshi (1885~1960) who emphasized the comparative study. The methodology was very popular among the scholars of the time. Lee Hye-ku accepted the methodology and wrote his first academic thesis comparing Korean traditional music with Chinese and Western musical theory. Lee Hye-ku was able to write his first thesis asked by Tanabe Hisao who was preparing a publication to dedicate his teacher Kishibe Shigeo. The connection between the three people was the Imperial University which was core of the academism of the time to raise the “elite of (Japanese) empire.” In this sense, Lee’s personal horizon was built up on the Imperial University.
The essence of Mandanghak is inductive method, positivism and comparative view. The methodology of Mandanghak was most advanced and effective in the first half of the 20th century. However, it is not totally acceptable in this 21st century. We need to accept the advantage of Mandanghak, the open and scientific mind and discard the disadvantage, the tendency toward Western musicology and heavy positivism, in order to open an new era of Korean musicology.
