초록

2000년대 들어 언론을 통해 접하는 범죄의 수위는 매우 높아졌으며 도저히 ‘정상’적인인간의 범주에서는 설명할 수 없는 폭력성과 잔혹성을 띄는 경우들이 늘어갔다. 그리고 이에 대한 불안은 문화예술의 범주에도 자연스럽게 반영되었다. 이러한 맥락에서 한국 영화는 새로운 장르물에 대한 시도로 캐릭터와 사건의 측면에서 사이코패스를 적극 활용하였는데, 영화로 전유되는 사이코패스에 대한 의미는 사회적, 병리적 측면과는 차이를 갖는다.
한국 TV드라마 역시 이 무렵은 추리나 스릴러와 같은 장르물의 성장을 도모하던 시기였기 때문에, 사이코패스는 놓칠 수 없는 화소였다. 그러나 영화에 비해 TV드라마에서 사이코패스는 범죄/추리/스릴러 장르의 악역 클리셰로 축소되어 활용되어왔다. 이 과정에서 다양한 담론의 의미는 휘발되고 오락영화의 선정적 시선만이 TV드라마에서 차용된다.
<사이코지만 괜찮아>는 기존의 장르드라마들과 결을 달리하여 전형적 악역 캐릭터로서의 평면적 활용을 벗어나 보다 예술지향적인 영화들이 취하는 방식을 확보하고 있다는점에서 기존의 TV드라마들과 구분된다. 그리고 이러한 극적 재현의 과정에서 발생하는 다양한 의미가 현재 한국사회가 갖는 문화적 징후를 예민하게 드러내고 있다는 점에서 이작품은 더 큰 의미를 갖는다고 볼 수 있다.
작품의 전반에서 정상과 비정상의 경계는 매우 모호하게 제시된다. 비정상의 존재는 제목에서 지칭하듯 ‘사이코’로 호명되는데, 서사가 전개될수록 비정상의 존재들은 ‘이상한’, ‘낯선’ 존재로 순화된다. 극의 초반, 정상과 비정상의 구분에 대해 해체적인 화두를 던지며서사되는 작품은 결국은 선과 악의 담론으로 치환되었고, 치유를 통해 더 이상 문제적 행동을 하지 않게 됨으로써 ‘착한’ 정상인이 되는 과정을 보여주는 것에 그치고 있다. 궁극적 악인으로 설정된 문영의 엄마가 모성애를 갖춘 어머니상에 대한 전형에서 탈피한 사이코패스 안타고니스트라는 점은 이 작품이 노린 가장 큰 반전의 지점이다. 그러나 이러한의외성이 결국 괴물로서의 악역이라는 전형으로 회귀된다는 점에서 모성과 가족 담론에대한 긍정적 회의는 한계를 갖는다. 오히려 그 과정에서 어머니의 사랑을 받지 못한 아이들이란 결국 망가진 상태의 비정상 인간이 될 수밖에 없다는 점을 강조하게 된다.
한편 이 작품에서 잔혹동화는 동화작가인 문영이라는 캐릭터의 설정 요소를 넘어 서사적으로, 그리고 영상적 미장센으로 적극 활용되고 있는데, 메타포를 매력적인 방법으로 시각화하는 연출로서는 가치를 가지지만, 한층 내밀하게 서사의 측면에서 기능하는 부분은크지 않다는 점에서 아쉬움을 남긴다.

영어초록

In the 2000s, the level of crime that the media encountered increased substantially. An increasing number of cases of unexplained violence and brutality have been included in the category of “normal” human behavior. Anxiety about this is also naturally reflected in the culture and art. Korean films actively use psychopathic characters and occurrences in an attempt to create new genres. The meaning of psychopathic exclusive to movies differs from its social and pathological aspects. At this time, Korean TV dramas also sought the growth of such genres as mysteries and thrillers, so psychopaths were an element of the story that could not be excluded. Compared to movies, there are depictions of psychopaths in TV dramas, being depicted primarily as villains in crime, mystery, and thriller genres. In the process, the meaning of various discourses have been volatilized, and only the sensational gaze of entertainment films has been borrowed from TV dramas.
However, It’s Okay to Be Psycho is different from these genre dramas. Beyond its simply use as an incendiary villain character, it has secured a more art-oriented film position. Additionally, the various meanings of the process of dramatic reproduction are more meaningful in that they reveal particular aspects of contemporary Korean culture.
Throughout this TV series, the line between the normal and abnormal is highly vague. The existence of abnormality is called psycho, as the title suggests. As the drama and story progress, abnormal beings are purified into “strange” beings.
Mental illness is an abnormal condition, but it is like a disease. Mental illness is also because “it’s okay” can help with healing and recovery in the TV series.
At the beginning of the TV series, it asks a deconstructive question about the distinction between normal and abnormal. However, the TV series is limited to showing the process of becoming a “good” normal person by eventually replacing.
It’s Okay to Be Psycho with a discourse of good and evil and no longer engaging in problematic behavior through healing.
The actual psychopath in It’s Okay To Be Psycho is not the author, Moon-young, but Moon-young’s mother. Moon-young, Kang-tae, and Sang-tae are brothers who suffered at the hands of these psychopaths when they were children.
Moon-young's mother is not typical of a mother. She's a violent killer and a real psychopath in this drama. The image of a monster villain is stronger than the meaning beyond the typical maternal discourse. Therefore, positive skepticism about maternal and familial discourse is impossible. Rather, this emphasizes that children who have not been loved by their mothers are doomed to become abnormal human beings who are broken.
Brutal fairy tales are actively used the elements of the story and the visual elements, This is very effective in that the protagonist is a brutal fairy tale writer.
In It’s Okay To Be Psycho, fairy tales have value in the way they visualize metaphors. However, it is regrettable that the value as a discourse is not great.
