松沙 奇宇萬의 학문 활동과 蘆沙 性理說의 계승 (A Study on the Academic Activities and Nosa(蘆沙) Ki Jeong-Jin(奇正鎭)’s neo-Confucianism Succession of Songsa(松沙) Ki Woo-Man(奇宇萬))

초록

본고는 奇正鎭(1798-1879) 사후에 蘆沙學派의 嫡傳으로 평가받으며 세 차례에 걸쳐 진행된 『蘆沙集』 간행을 주도하는 등 노사학파의 결집과 확산을 주도한 松沙 奇宇萬(1846-1916)의 학문 활동과 蘆沙學 계승 면모가 두드러지게 드러나는 그의 성리설을 분석 정리한 것이다.
기존의 기우만에 관한 연구는 대체로 그의 의병 활동 내지는 문학 활동에 초점이 맞추어져 그의 생애 및 활동도 학문 활동보다는 의병 내지 문학 활동에 초점이 맞추어졌다. 하지만 기정진 사후인 19세기 말부터 기우만은 호남 유림을 대표하는 인물로 평가받는 등 학문적 영향력이 상당하였을 뿐만 아니라 체계적이고 지속적인 강학을 통해 수많은 문인을 배출하며 노사학의 계승 및 확산에 주력한 인물이었다. 특히 영남과 호남을 넘나들며 펼친 그의 학문 활동은 理를 중심으로 한 노사학의 계승 면모가 뚜렷하게 드러나는 것이었다.
본고에서는 기존에 상대적으로 유의하지 않았던 기우만의 학문 활동과 그의 성리설에 초점을 맞추어 그 구체적인 내용을 정리 분석하였다. 성리설과 관련한 별도의 저작을 남기지 않았고, 『노사집』 三刊 당시에 노사의 성리설을 둘러싸고 전개되었던 기호학계의 논쟁 과정에서 구체적으로 자신의 성리학적 입장을 표명하지 않을 정도로 신중한 태도를 견지하였지만, 기우만은 문인과의 강론 과정에서 지속해서 자신의 성리학적 입장을 구체적으로 드러내었다. 특히 그는 리의 실현에 초점을 맞추어 실천 지향적인 심성론을 제시하여 도덕 실천 및 의리의 구현을 강조하였다. 이러한 점에서 그의 성리학적 입장은 새로운 이론적 모색이나 변론이 아니라 善의 실현을 위한 방향에 주안점이 두어졌으며, 이것은 당시 혼란한 세태를 극복하고 유학적 질서의 회복과 국난을 극복하기 위한 방향점으로 제시된 것이었다고 이해할 수 있다. 그리고 다각적으로 전개된 그의 학문 활동과 성리설을 통해 그의 위상은 노사학파의 핵심이자 근현대 호남 유학의 상징적인 학자라 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

Songsa(松沙) Ki Woo-Man(奇宇萬) was evaluated as a representative literary figure of the Nosa school(蘆沙學派) after the death of Nosa(蘆沙) Ki Jeong-jin(奇正鎭), and led the publication of the Nosajip(蘆沙集) that was conducted three times. Through this process, he developed academic activities that led to the gathering and spread of Nosa school, and presented neo-Confucian theories that show the succession of Nosa Studies(蘆沙學). The existing studies on Ki Woo-Man were mainly focused on his righteous or literary activities, and his life was not relatively interested in academic activities. However, since the end of the 19th century, after the death of Ki Jeong-jin, Ki Woo-Man was regarded as a representative of Honam Confucian Scholars and had a considerable academic influence. In addition, he was a person who focused on the succession and spread of Nosa Studies by producing numerous literary people through systematic and continuous lecture. In particular, he has been engaged in academic activities across Yeongnam and Honam areas, and the succession of Nosa studies centered on principles has been clearly revealed.
This study summarizes and analyzes the specific contents of Ki Woo-Man's academic activities and his Confucian theories, which were not relatively significant in the past.
He did not leave a separate work on neo-Confucianism in the Songsajip(松沙集), and he maintained a cautious attitude so that he did not express his position on Confucianism theory in detail even in the process of controversy in Kiho academia that was developed around the theory of Confucianism at the time of the third publication of Nosajip. However, he continued to express his views on Confucianism in the course of his lecture with his disciples. In particular, he emphasized the implementation of moral practice and righteousness by presenting a theory of practical mind-oriented mind-set focusing on the realization of principles. In this regard, his view on neo-Confucianism theory was not a new theoretical search or argument, and the focus was on the direction for realizing the Confucianism, which was presented as a direction to overcome the confused situation at the time and to overcome the restoration of the Confucian order and the national crisis. Through his various academic activities and neo-Confucianism, his status can be regarded as the core of the Nosa school and a symbolic scholar of modern and contemporary Honam Confucianism.
