“Working  through  Trauma”:  Comfort Womenʹs  Self‐Representation  in  the  Nazen  Moksori  Trilogy

This  paper  explores  how  the  Nazen  Moksori  trilogy  has called  up  the  former  comfort  womenʹs  self‐representation  by working  through  post‐traumatic  symptoms  in  LaCapraʹs  term at  both  individual  and  social  levels. While  The  Murmuring  depends  on  a  confessional  mode  of testimonies  for  urging  the  historical  truth,  Habitual  Sadness  is made  up  of  songs  and  jokes  as  a  vehicle  for  articulating  the comfort  womenʹs  long  repressed  desires  and  needs.  In  My Own  Breathing,  the  idea  of  one  comfort  woman  interviewing another  shows  us  the  collective  processes  of  the  comfort womenʹs  “working  through  trauma”  towards  self‐representation.  In 2010,  when  many  of  the  Grandmothers  have  already  passed away,  this  trilogy  has  become  much  more  invaluable  for teaching  past  colonial  history  and  for  letting  us  know  how the  former  comfort  women  have  struggled  with  their unspeakable  and  unbearable  experience  through  the  narrative with  performance  in  the  films. From  this  perspective,  the  feminist  director  Byun  Young‐jooʹs contribution  to  the  history  of  Korean  comfort  womenʹs  issues should  be  re‐evaluated.  Her  achievement  of  calling  up  the former  Korean  comfort  womenʹs  self‐representation  by communicating  with  the  next  generation  has  finally  enabled  the imaginary  community  to  share  their  struggling  processes  of working  through  their  own  post‐traumatic  symptoms  with  other Koreans  and  finally  opened  up  the  new  perspective  for  looking at  the  history  of  the  Korean  comfort  women  issues.
