티베트 악기재료에 나타난 상징적 의미 - 티베트의 다마루(Damaru)와 캉링(Kangling)을 중심으로 - (A Research into the Meanings of Symbols Found on theTibertain Musical Instruments Damaru and Kangling)

초록

이 세상에는 다양한 악기들이 많다. 소리의 울림이나 악기의 구조만 다양한 것이 아니라 악기에 사용된 재료 또한 여러 가지로 많다. 인간은 원시시대부터 나무, 동물의 가죽이나 뼈 혹은 뿔 그리고 돌이나 금속, 흙 등 자신들이 거주하는 환경에서 손쉽게 구할 수 있는 자연적인 재료들을 이용하여 그들에게 필요한 악기들을 발명해 왔다. 그 중에서도 어떤 지역에서는 아주 특별한 재료로 만든 악기들이 발견된다. 바로 죽은 사람의 신체부위를 악기의 재료로 사용한 것이 그것이다. 그 대표적인 예가 티베트의 불교의식에 사용되는 사람의 두개골, 즉 정수리의 반구 두 개를 맞붙여서 만든 북인 다마루(damaru)와 사람의 넓적다리뼈로 만든 관악기인 캉링(kangling)이다.
본 논문에서 다루고자하는 주된 내용은 인간이 얼마나 해괴망측한 여러 재료들을 동원해 악기를 만들었나를 살펴보는데 있는 것이 아니다. 그보다는 하필이면 왜 이런 재료를 사용하고 있는가에 대한 그들 나름의 이유를 알아보는데 있다. 자세한 부연 설명이 없더라도 우리는 이러한 악기들이 일상적인 음악행위와는 거리가 먼 특별한 연행에 사용되었을 것이라는 것을 추측할 수 있다. 예를 들어 특별한 종교의식이나 주술적인 의식에 쓰이기 위한 도구는 신비감을 조성하기 위하여 흔치 않은 재료로 만든 악기가 필요했을 것이라고 생각할 수 있다. 그런 추측에서 죽은 사람의 몸에서 얻어낸 유골에 특별한 의미를 담아 악기로 만들었을 것이라고 충분히 짐작할 수 있을 것이다.
필자가 본 논문을 통해 밝히고자 하는 것은 악기의 정밀한 구조와 음향적 울림에 대한 세세한 정보가 아니다. 왜냐하면 그 악기들은 음악적 울림을 즐기기 위한 것으로 고안된 것이 아니라고 보기 때문이다. 그보다는 이 악기가 사용된 문화권에서 구성원들에게 어떤 역할과 상징적 의미를 담고 있는가에 대한 고찰이 본 논문의 주된 관심사가 되고 있다.
우리는 흔히 악기라는 것이 물리적 울림을 얼마나 구체적으로 실현하는가에 관심을 두고 만들어진 것이라 여기는 경우가 많다. 그러나 비서구 지역에서의 음악적 행위들을 관찰하다 보면 이러한 물리적 울림이 결과물로써 일차적 관심사가 아닌 경우를 만나게 된다. 즉 악기의 발명이 음향적으로 어떤 좋은 소리를 만들어 내는가에 관심이 쏠려 있기보다, 그 악기의 재료가 가진 특수성과 그에 따른 연주를 통해 구성원들에게 어떠한 상징적 의미를 전달하고자 하는 데에 목적을 두는 경우가 많다. 따라서 필자는 티베트의 사례를 통해 이와 같은 내용, 즉 다마루와 캉링에 담긴 역할과 기능 그리고 구성원들이 부여한 상징적인 의미들을 고찰해보고자 한다.

영어초록

There are many musical instruments in this world. The echo of sounds or the structure of musical instruments is various and there are many materials which are used in them. Men have invented musical instruments that they needed using natural materials which were easily found in their residential environments including wood, animal skins, bones, or horns, stones, metal, and dirt, etc. since the primitive times. The musical instruments which were made by very special materials were found in some areas. It is the body parts of the deceased that were used as the materials of musical instruments. A typical example is Damaru, the drum which was made by putting craniums which were used in the Tibetan Buddhist rituals, that is, two hemispheres of the tops of the heads together and Kangling, the wind instrument which was made by the thigh bones of men.
The major content that this paper tries to handle does not include examining how many extremely scandalous materials men made musical instruments with. Its purpose is to investigate why they used these materials. Even without further explanation, it can be estimated that these musical instruments were used in special annual events which are far from ordinary musical acts. For example, it can be thought that tools to be used in special religious rites or shamanistic ceremonies needed the musical instruments which were made by rare materials to create mystery. So you can enough guess that the remains from the dead bodies were made into the musical instruments with special meanings.
The thing that the author tries to determine through this paper does not include the detailed information on the precise structure of musical instruments and the echo of sounds. It's because it is thought that the musical instruments was not designed to enjoy the musical echo. Rather, The main concern of this paper is what roles and what symbolic meanings these musical instruments include in the cultural areas that they were used.
There are often many cases to be thought that musical instruments concretely realize the physical echo. But when musical acts were observed in the non-western areas, there are cases that this physical echo is not primary concern as the results. That is, there are many cases whose purposes are to deliver the distinct characteristics of the musical instruments and some symbolic meanings to members through their performance, not being interested in how their invention acoustically made good sounds. Therefore, the author tries to consider these contents, that is, the roles and functions of Damaru and Kangling and the symbolic meanings that the members gave through the Tibetan examples.
