부재하는 실재에 관한 세일럼 사람들의 불안과 공포- 아서 밀러 각색 영화 <시련>과 장 보드리야르의 시뮬라크라 시뮬라시옹을 중심으로 (Hysteria and Panic by the Absence of Reality in Salem - A Study on the Movie Adapted from Arthur Miller’s The crucible with Jean Baurdrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation)

초록

1952년 발표 된 아서 밀러 Arthur miller의 희곡 『시련 The Crucible』은 작품의 배경이 된 17세기 세일럼의 마녀사냥과 당대 매카시즘열풍이 맞물리면서 큰 주목을 받은바 있다. 특히, 이 희곡은 비평가들로부터 “개인의 저항”과 “사회적 집단광기”의 이분법적 작법 구도로 큰 호응을 얻은 바 있다. 이러한 작품의 이분법적 구도에 관한 비평은 1997년 밀러의 각색에 의해 탄생한 영화 <시련>에 대한 평가에서 역시 달라지지 않았는데, 대부분의 비평가들은 이 영화가 원작의 완벽한 재현에 성공했다고 평가함으로써, 영화적 각색으로 인해 확장된 <시련>의 비평적 지평을 제시하지 못하고 있다. 특히 작가인 밀러가 고백했듯, 현대에 <시련>이 주고 있는 의미는 “정의 내릴 수 없는 어떤 불안”같은 부분인데, 지금까지의 비평은 “정의내릴 수 없는 어떤 불안”이 내포하는 의미상의 모호함 때문인지, “집단광기” 이외의 다른 어떤 주제적 측면에서의 분석을 제시하지 않고 있다.
따라서 본고는 밀러가 고백한 “정의내릴 수 없는 어떤 불안”을 현대적 의미에서 어떻게 해석할 수 있을지에 대한 새로운 비평적 지평을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 정의내릴 수 없는 어떤 불안에서 파생하는 집단광기의 연쇄작용을 장 보드리야르 Jean Baudrillard의 시뮬라크라 시뮬라시옹 Simulacra and Simulation을 통해 분석함으로써 이러한 집단광기의 중심에는 부재하는 실재에 대한 불안이 존재하고 있음을 주장하고자 한다. 나아가 밀러가 이러한 불안을 통해 <시련>을 텍스트 고유의 지시적 사유의 범주로부터 포스트 모던적 탈 지시적 사유의 예술작품으로 새롭게 각색하고 있음을 주장하고자 한다.

영어초록

The Crucible was published in 1952 by Arthur Miller and has received attention from critics and readers because of the witch-hunt in 17th century Salem as it overlapped with the hysteria generated by Senator Joe McCarthy’s hunt for Communist. Thus, The Crucible was applauded and criticized at the same time by critics due to its dichotomous structure between individual resistance and social hysteria. When the movie, “The Crucible” was released in 1997, critics also evaluated and concluded that The Crucible showed the fidelity of film adapted which focuses on dichotomous structure between individual resistance and the social hysteria.
However, Miller has revealed his assumption itself of his work; yet The Crucible brings about the message of indefinable personal panic or anxiety to contemporary audiences. In an interview with the Washington Post, Miller talked about the contemporary meaning of The Crucible as being: “I hard to name, but it's there — there is some apprehension that has no definition.” Nevertheless, contemporary criticism cannot suggest any new critical point of view about this indefinable apprehension that Miller mentioned. Therefore, this paper will present a new contemporary critical point of “indefinable apprehension” related to the collective hysteria of the times. Especially, adapted to film, The Crucible shows that the subjective anxiety of suspending judgement of good and evil by not only focusing on the collective hysteria, but also visualizing individual panic is destructive. Furthermore, this paper will extend critical horizons for The Crucible by analyzing a chain of collective hysteria caused by indefinable personal panic with the notion of Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation. In consideration of the fact that inexistent metaphysical value is devised in reality, The Crucible shows a Simulation, which means a chain of hyper-reality with the absence of reality such as social manipulation as a being, this is another simulation replaced within a whole other simulation.
In conclusion, the paper will argue that through apprehension, Miller liberates The Crucible from a text in the scope of indicative thinking to a postmodern art piece in an indefinable philosophical system by suggesting Jean Francois Lyotard's theory of sublime in postmodern aesthetics reveals and stresses the absence of truth.
