초록

수혈식석곽묘는 가야의 대표적인 무덤으로, 그 구조와 무덤에서 출토되는 다양한 유물은 고고학적으로 가야사를 연구하는데 중요한 자료가 되어왔다. 수혈식석곽묘에 대한 지금까지의 연구경향을 살펴보면, 무덤구조와 출토유물의 형식분류 및 속성분석을 통한 편년과 정치체 연구에 집중되어 왔음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 연구경향으로 인해 수혈식석곽묘의 발굴조사도 표면적으로 드러나는 구조와 규모, 출토유물을 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. 최근, 각지에서 봉토분 조사예가 증가하면서 봉토 조사방법에 대한 논의가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이러한 논의는 봉토조사에서 점토낭의 사용, 구획석열, 분할성토와 같은 다양한 정보를 확인할 수 있게 하였다. 그러나 매장주체부인 석곽 조사방법에 대한 논의는 미진하여 석곽조사는 여전히 드러나는 현상의 관찰로 이루어지고 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 석곽 조사방법의 문제점과 한계점을 살펴보고, 봉토조사와 같이 다양한 정보를 추출할 수 있는 발전적인 조사방법을 모색하고자 하였다. 먼저, 한 유적을 대상으로 최근까지의 발굴조사 방법을 검토하고, 그 유적에 대한 실질적인 발굴조사를 통해 기존 조사방법의 문제점과 한계점을 극복하고자 조사방법의 수정을 시도하였다. 조사방법의 수정은 석곽을 각 시설별로 구분하여 축조과정과 축조과정상 에서 예측되는 사항에 대해 사전조사를 통해 충분하게 검토하였다. 그리고 실제 조사에서 그 사항을 확인할 수 있는 조사방법을 시도하였다. 다음으로 실제 조사에서 수정된 조사방법을 통해 얻어진 성과에 대해 살펴보고, 수정된 조사방법의 효용성을 검토하였다. 수정된 조사방법을 통해 얻어진 성과는 대표적으로 벽석의 세부적인 축조공정을 들 수 있는데, 내벽면 관찰로 파악한 세부공정을 뒷채움층의 토층조사와 묘광벽면의 기울기변화로 검토한 결과, 벽석의 축조공정과 일치하는 선상에서 뒷채움층이 분층(分層)되고, 묘광의 벽면이 단(段)을 이루면서 경사각도가 바뀌는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 축조공정상의 분리는 다른 조사 예를 통해서 피장자의 안치시점과 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 추정할 수 있었다. 각 시설에 대한 조사성과는 조사방법의 효용성을 적극적으로 보여주는 단서로, 조사성과에 따라 조사방법을 수정·보완하여 수혈식석곽묘 조사방법을 제시하였다. 마지막 으로, 수정된 조사방법을 통해 얻어진 성과를 바탕으로 석곽의 축조공정을 복원해 보고, 제시된 수혈식석곽묘의 조사방법의 효용성과 한계점을 검토하였다.

영어초록

The vertical entrance stone-lined burial is the representative burial type of Gaya. The architectural features of this burial type, as well as the various artifacts excavated from the structure, have provided important information for the archaeological study of Gaya. Studies on vertical entrance stone-lined burials until now have generally focused on chronology and political systems, through form classification and attribute analysis of architectural features and grave goods. Due to this tendency, the investigation of vertical entrance stone-lined burials carried out in the field has also tended to focus on the superficial observation of burial structure, size and grave goods. The recent increase in the excavation of mounded tombs has led to active discussions on methods for excavating the mound structure of these tombs. Such discussions were possible due to the existence of data such as dividing stone lines, sectioned earth layers and bags filled with clay. However, in the case of the stone wall of the burial chamber, investigation has still focused on observing superficial phenomena. This paper addresses the problems and limitations of the previous method of investigating the stone wall feature of vertical entrance stone-lined burials, and attempts to search for an investigation method which may provide a wider range of information, as has been achieved for burial mounds. Therefore, recently implemented investigation methods are reviewed and their problems are pointed out. In addition, through the actual excavation of burials, attempts are made to modify investigation methods in order to overcome the problems and limitations of the existing method. Regarding the modification of investigation methods, the stone walls are classified according to function. Preliminary investigation is carried out on the stone walls in order confirm the construction process, as well as expected characteristics of the construction process. The newly established investigation method is then tested through actual excavation. Next, the results obtained through the modified investigation method are assessed and the utility of the modified method is reviewed. Results obtained through the modified investigation method include an understanding of the specific process of constructing the stone wall. Observation of the soil layers of the earth backfill and the slope angle of the burial pit wall led to an understanding of the specific construction process, and this made it possible to confirm that the earth backfill was deposited in layers which corresponded to the construction process of the stone wall, as well as that the burial pit wall also evidenced layers which had different slope angles. It is possible to assume that these separate stages of the construction process were closely related to when the corpse was interred. The information obtained regarding the different components of the burial structure demonstrates the utility of an excavation method. The excavation method was modified and supplemented according to the excavation results, and the final modified excavation method for vertical entrance stone-lined burials was presented. Finally, based on the results obtained through this modified excavation method, the construction process of the burial's stone wall was restored, and the method's utility and limitations were reviewed.
