皇南里 乙墳의 재인식: 신라 왕도 초기 횡혈식석실묘 일례 (Re-recognition of Hwangnam-li No. Eul(乙) Tomb : Early Stone Chamber Tomb of Silla’s Capital City)

초록

황남리 을분은 일제강점기에 조사된 ‘경주 황남동 소형 고분군’에 속한 고분 중 하나이다. 필자는 이와 관련된 자료들을 살피는 과정에서 이 고분이 ‘신라 왕도 초기 횡혈식석실묘’라는 판단을 내리게 되었다. 신라 왕도에서의 횡혈식석실묘 도입은 신라 고분문화 전개상에서의 큰 획기임에 틀림없으므로 황남리 을분이 이러한 변혁 상에 자리하고 있다면 우리는 그것을 자세히 파악할 필요가 있다.
황남리 을분은 월성북고분군의 현 91호이다. 이의 매장시설은 호석보다 3척(약 91㎝) 낮게 조영된 반지하식이며 하나의 봉분에 우편재연도의 횡혈식석실묘인 2실(주실)과 횡구식 구조의 1실(부․측실)이 L자형으로 배치되었다. 2실(주실)의 현실은 평균 너비 7.5척(약 2.27m), 길이 9척(약 2.73m) 정도로 장단비는 1:1.2이다. 현실 내부에는 시상이 ㅠ자형 배치로 총 3회 설치되었다. 양 측벽은 내경하고 4매의 개석을 얹은 제형 평천장이다. 1실(부․측실)에는 파수부호, 대호, 장동옹, 철제 등자 등 실용성이 강한 것들을 포함한 약 200점의 부장품이 안치되었다. 출토 토기로 보아 이 고분의 조영 연대는 6세기 2/4분기로 비정된다.
또 황남리 을분을 통하여 그간 보문동합장분 횡혈식석실묘 등을 중심으로 설명되어 온 신라 왕도 횡혈식석실묘 도입 과정을 보론하였다. 이는 신라 왕도 중심고분군의 묘제 변화와 장지 이동, 황남리 을분의 구조적 계보와 그 의미에 집중한 것이다.
본고의 의의는 1926년에 조사된 이래 100년에 약간 못 미치는 기간 동안 우리의 기억에서 멀어져 있던 황남리 을분을 새롭게 자료화하였다는 점, 이를 통해 신라 왕도 초기 횡혈식석실묘 도입 과정을 더욱 면밀하게 하였다는 점에 있다.

영어초록

Hwangnam-li No. Eul(乙) Tomb is one of the ‘Hwangnam-dong Small-sized Tumli’ in Gyeongju which were surveyed during the Japanese Colonial Era. During the process of examining the materials related to this tomb, I concluded that this tomb is the ‘early stone chamber tomb of Silla’s capital city’. The introduction of stone chamber tombs in Silla’s capital city must have been a major milestone in the development of Silla’s tumuli culture. If Hwangnam-li No. Eul(乙) Tomb was constructed during the process of the introduction, there is a need to have a deeper understanding of it.
Therefore, this paper organizes materials related to the Hwangnam-li No. Eul(乙) Tomb. The materials include five short reports and thirty-nine gelatin dry plate photos. Through these materials, information on the location of the tomb, its mound, depth, direction of the main axis, Room No. 1 (auxiliary chamber), and Room No. 2 (main chamber) can be identified. In particular, Room No. 1 and No. 2 are analyzed in detail in the order of their chamber’s internal structure, and the excavated artifacts.
Furthermore, based on the restored content from the analysis, this paper provides a supplementary explanation of the process of introduction of stone chamber tombs in Silla’s capital city which used to be explained mainly by the double burial of Bomun-dong in Gyeongju and other stone chamber tombs. This focuses on the changes in the type of tombs and the location of tumuli in Silla’s capital city and the structural genealogy of Hwangnam-li No. Eul(乙) Tomb and its meaning.
This paper’s significance lies in the fact that Hwangnam-li No. Eul(乙) Tomb, which has been far from our memory for a period of slightly less than 100 years since its survey in 1926, is newly examined and documented, and through doing so, the process of introducing early stone chamber tombs in Silla’s capital city is studied more detailed.
