초록

이 글의 주된 목적은 리쾨르가 설명과 이해의 갈등을 완화시키는 도구로 상정한 몸을 자연주의적 관점으로 살폈을 때, 그의 설명과 이해가 훨씬 더 적절하게 해명될 수 있다는 것을 전향적으로 검토하려는 데 있다. 리쾨르에 따르면 설명과 이해의 논쟁은 몸/마음, 자연과학/인문과학, 객관주의/상대주의와 얽혀서 학문영역의 분화를 불러 왔으며, 그 귀결로 학문의 격자화를 부추겨 왔다. 이러한 갈등과 맞물린 강한 자연주의는 과학주의 vs 반과학주의(선험주의)로 심화되어 객관주의적 환원주의라는 얼굴로 화해되지 않는 길을 걷게 되었다. 이러한 의미에서 오늘날 학제적 탐구에 대한 미래의 핵심적 논쟁은 객관주의적 환원주의를 넘어서는 문제로 집약되었다. 따라서 오늘날에도 여전히 격자화된 담론 안에 갇혀서 생산적인 대화의 가능성을 원천적으로 가로막고 있는 설명과 이해의 갈등에 몸을 완화의 도구로 주목하고 있는 리쾨르의 통찰은 매우 중요해 보인다. 설명과 이해의 탐구에 있어서 몸의 중심성에 관한 리쾨르의 새로운 제안은 자연과학과 인문과학 간의 갈등적 요소인 환원적 객관성과 방법적 상대성을 상호보완적으로 완화시키려는 선도적인 해석이며, 이분법에 따른 문제로 인해 분화된 인문학의 주요 난제들을 푸는 열쇠가 될 수 있기 때문이다. 인지과학의 경험적 탐구의 방향성에 주목하고 있는 체험주의의 상상력 이론은 리쾨르가 제시한 몸이 어떻게 설명과 이해의 이분법적 갈등을 완화시킬 수 있는지를 구체적으로 보여준다. 무엇보다도 몸의 중심성을 구체적으로 해명할 체험주의의 영상도식과 은유적 투사는 몸의 활동의 자연적 조건을 통해 직접 발생하는 상상력의 기제들이기 때문에 리쾨르가 상정한 몸의 역할이 첫째, 자연주의를 이미 선취하고 있다는 것을 보여줄 뿐만 아니라 둘째, 자연과학과 인문과학의 논쟁으로 창발된 객관주의적 환원주의의 문제를 전향적으로 설명하고 있기에 제3의 학제적 탐구의 중요성과 가능성도 열어 줄 것이다. 결론적으로 리쾨르의 몸의 중심적 해명은 실질적으로 경험하는 설명과 이해가 한데 묶여 하나의 철학적 이론으로 되어가는 과정에서 무엇이 억압되고, 과장되었는지, 그리고 어떤 두려움에 직면하게 되었는지를 선명하게 보여줄 것이다. 하지만 이 글은 설명과 이해에 관한 수정된 이론을 재구성하기보다는 그것들의 경험적 지반을 드러내고, 그것들이 안고 있는 갈등적 요소의 소재를 명료하게 보여주어서 완화된 사유의 이론적인 통로를 제시한다는 점에서 기존의 설명과 이해에 대한 철학적 논의와는 다른 차별성을 갖는다.

영어초록

The main purpose of this article is to review positively that the body presented as a tool to moderate the conflict of explanation and understanding by Ricoeur could be much more appropriately explained for his explanation and understanding when it is considered under the point of view for naturalism. According to Ricoeur, the dispute on explanation and understanding has brought the differentiation of academic territories by having the entanglement of mind/body, natural science/humanities and objectivism/relativism, and as a consequence, it has instigated the academic mesh discretization. The strong naturalism that is interlocked with such a conflict has deepened with the scientism vs anti-scientism (empiricism) to walk the uncompromised path of the face for the objectivistic reductionism. In this implication, the critical dispute of the future on the interdisciplinary study of today has been integrated into an issue beyond the objectivistic reductionism. Therefore, the insight of Ricoeur that pays attention to the body as a tool of moderation for the conflict of explanation and understanding that intrinsically blocking the possibility of productive communication by yet to be entrapped within the gridded discourse even today seems extremely important. With respect to the study of explanation and understanding, the new proposal of Ricoeur regarding the centrality of body would be the leading interpretation to moderate the reductionist objectivity and methodological relativity that are the conflict factors between natural science and humanities in mutually supplementary way, and it could also be the key to solve main problems of humanities that have been segmented due to the issues under the dichotomy. The imagination theory of experientialism that pays attention to the direction of experiential inquiries in cognitive science demonstrates in details how the body presented by Ricoeur may moderate the conflict in dichotomy for explanation and understanding. More than anything else, image-schema of experientialism and metaphorical projection to explain in details of the centrality of body are the mechanisms of imagination directly occurring through the natural conditions of bodily activities that the role of body presented by Ricoeur displays, first, that it has already preoccupied of the naturalism, second, it positively explains the issue of objectivistic reductionism emerged from the dispute of natural science and humanities that it is expected to open up the importance and possibility of a third interdisciplinary study. In conclusion, the central explanation of body by Ricoeur would clearly demonstrate what has been oppressed, exaggerated, and what fear it encounters in the process of explanation and understanding empirically experienced are bounded into a philosophical theory. However, this article has different differentiation from the philosophical discussions on existing explanation and understanding in the point that it presents the theoretical passage of moderated reasoning as it succinctly display the experiential foundation as well as elements of conflicts within, rather than restructuring the revised theories on explanation and understanding.
