초록

8.15 해방 후 임진왜란의 영웅 이순신은 ‘외세를 몰아낸 민족의 수호자’라는 점에서 ‘탈식민’의 표상이 됐고, 연극무대에도 빈번하게 소환됐다. 카프 출신의 극작가 김태진 또한 이 같은 추모 열풍 속에서 월북 전에는 「이순신」을 무대에 올렸고, 월북 후에는 「리순신 장군」을 발표하기에 이른다. 이처럼 작가가 삼팔선을 넘어 북한 체제로 편입되는 과정에서, 흥행지향적 연극이라는 평을 듣기도 했던 「이순신」은 훗날 북한에서 획기적 성과작으로 인정받은 「리순신 장군」으로 재탄생하게 된다. 곧 「리순신 장군」은 작가가 월북 전 지향했던 민족연극의 관념을 구현한 창작물인 동시에, 북한연극의 역사적 인물 전형화 및 북한체제의 이순신 주조 양상의 단초를 확인할 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 자료가 된다.
「리순신 장군」에서 이순신의 적대세력으로 부각되는 것은 왕을 비롯한 조정 대신들로, 작가는 외세에 대한 항쟁 대신 조선의 내부 갈등을 극대화시키고, 이 과정에서 봉건적 지배 구조를 전면적으로 비판한다. 여기서 백성, 난민, 의병 등으로 지칭되는 피지배계층은 “봉건 유제 소탕”과 “민중의 현실 직시”라는 작가의 지향점을 체현한다. 그러나 이들은 이순신과 별개로 행동하지 못하며, 철저하게 그에게 구원받는 대상으로 존재한다는 점에서 극의 주체가 되지 못한다. 이순신과 대비되는 봉건 군주 ․ 관료들의 무능함이 부각되고, 민중은 이순신과의 연관성 속에서만 기능함으로써 「리순신 장군」은 이순신이라는 우상에 대한 텍스트로 남게 되는 것이다. 김태진은 월북 전 발표한 민족연극론에서 민주개혁의 주축을 근로계급으로 규정하고, 민족계몽의 기초는 인권에 두어야 한다며 연극을 통한 인민의 계몽을 제창했다. 하지만 「리순신 장군」에서 작가가 기획했던 민족연극의 근간이자 지향점인 인민은 후경화됐고, 장군 혹은 어버이라는 우상만이 부각됐다. 김태진 또한 당대의 거대한 시대적 흐름에 휩쓸리면서, 그의 민족연극론은 종국에 수령이라는 절대자로 수렴됐던 것이다.

영어초록

Yi Sun-shin who was the hero of the Imjin War became the symbol of decolonization after the 8․15 liberation in that he was a national guardian who had driven out foreign power, and he was one of popular characters who frequently appeared in theatrical performances. Playwriter Kim Tae-jin who was once a member of the KAPF also presented a play「Yi Sun-shin」 on the stage in admiration of him before he went to North Korea, and he presented another play「Admiral Lee Sun-shin」on the stage in the North after he went there. The「Admiral Lee Sun-shin」was a creation of the playwriter that embodied the idea of national play that he had pursued before he went to North Korea, and that is one of important materials in that it is an example for the typification of historical figures in North Korean play and gives a clue on the aspects of idolization in the North.
In this play, the king and the bureaucrat were regarded as the adversaries of Yi Sun-shin. The playwriter put emphasis on the inner conflicts of the Joseon Dynasty rather than struggle against foreign power, and severely criticized the feudal ruling classes. The subjugated people who were called the subjects, refugees or an army raised in the cause of justice were meant to be the embodiment of what the playwriter pursued: removal of feudalism and reality check of the general public. In fact, however, they couldn't be the subject of the play since they were just the objects to be saved by the admiral. The incompetency of the king and of the bureaucrat were played up in contrast with the superiority of Yi Sun-shin, and the public could be significant only in terms of their relationship with the admiral. As a consequence, the play「Admiral Lee Sun-shin」just functioned as a text of idolization. Kim Tae-jin had presented a theory of national play before he went to the North. In that theory, he defined the working class as the key people of democratic reform. He argued that the people should be enlightened through the play, and human rights should be the first thing they should learn about. In the play「Admiral Lee Sun-shin」, however, the people were actually disregarded, though they should be the core of national play according to the intention of the playwriter, and only the admiral was highlighted as an idol. Kim Tae-jin wasn't able to go against the current of the times, and his national play theory was just used as a means of idolization of the absolute.
