초록

본 연구는 무형유산 보호를 위한 새로운 접근 방식으로 다크투어리즘과의 연계 가능성을 분석하였다. 다크투어리즘은 죽음, 재난, 비극적 사건과 관련된 장소를 방문하고 역사적 교훈을 성찰하는 관광 형태로, 기억의 전승과 사회적 치유를 촉진할 수 있는 문화적 접근 방식으로 주목받고 있다. 본 연구는 무형유산과 다크투어리즘의 속성을 비교·분석하고, 양자의 교차 지점에서 나타나는 문화적·관광적 활용 가능성을 체계적으로 고찰하였다. 특히 죽음, 재난, 어둠, 치유와 관련된 다양한 무형유산을 문화적 기능과 상징에 따라 유형화하고, 다크투어리즘 스펙트럼을 적용하여 무형유산의 경험적 가치와 활용 가능성을 네 가지 범주로 구체화하였다. 이를 통해, 무형유산이 현대 사회의 정서적·윤리적 요구에 대응하며, 관광객의 공감과 참여를 유도하는 살아 있는 유산으로 기능할 수 있음을 제시하였다. 또한, 무형유산의 장소성을 ‘유연한 공간 개념’으로 확장하여, 무형의 기억이 상징적 장소로 구현되는 가능성을 분석하였으며, 관광을 통한 유산 보호가 전승주체의 삶과 공동체의 지속 가능성으로 연결되어야 함을 강조하였다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 다크투어리즘과 무형유산의 융합이 무형유산 보호의 실천적 방향을 모색하는 데 유효한 접근이 될 수 있음을 제안하며, 기억의 전승과 문화적 소통의 새로운 가능성을 제시하였다.

영어초록

This study explores the potential of integrating dark tourism as a new approach to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH). While ICH reflects the historical memory, identity, and way of life of communities, it faces increasing threats of disruption and disappearance amid rapid social and industrial changes. Dark tourism, which involves visiting sites associated with death, disaster, and historical tragedy, has emerged as a meaningful cultural practice that facilitates reflection on historical lessons and the transmission of collective memory. By comparing and analyzing the core attributes of dark tourism and ICH, this study systematically examines the cultural and touristic points of intersection between the two. In particular, various forms of ICH associated with death, disaster, darkness, and healing are classified according to their cultural functions and symbolic meanings. Applying the dark tourism spectrum, the study categorizes ICH into four groups—rituals of death and mourning, rituals of disaster recovery and consolation, interactions with spirits, and mythological or liminal beings—thereby identifying the experiential and educational value of ICH in the context of dark tourism. The study highlights the potential of ICH as a “living heritage” that actively addresses the emotional and ethical needs of contemporary society and fosters empathy and participation among visitors. It also broadens the concept of place inherent in ICH to a more flexible notion of “symbolic space,” illustrating how intangible memory can be spatially represented in meaningful ways. Furthermore, it emphasizes that tourism-based heritage protection must be closely linked to the lives of heritage bearers and the sustainability of local communities. Ultimately, this study suggests that integrating dark tourism with ICH offers a practical and effective approach to heritage safeguarding, while presenting new possibilities for memory transmission and cultural engagement.
