성주 백전․예산리 유적 목관묘의 축조와 매장방식 (The Construction and Burial Methods of Baekjeon and Yesan-ri Wooden Gasket Tombs in Seongju)

초록

이 글은 원삼국시대 성주 백전‧예산리 유적 목관묘에 대해서 크게 두 가지 관점에서 접근하였다. 즉 목관묘의 구조를 정리하고 축조양상을 통한 매장방식을 의례과정에서 여러 차례 매납이 진행되는 부장품에 주목하였다.
첫째, 백전‧예산리 유적 목관묘의 구조는 ①묘광 ②요갱 ③목관 ④충전토 ⑤실토(實土), ⑥봉토(목개)로 구성되어 있는데, 영남지역의 그것들과 큰 차이는 없으나 충전토가 없는 예가 간혹 확인되기도 해서 구조적 특이성을 보인다.
둘째, 백전‧예산리 31호 목관묘의 구조적 특징을 통해 일련의 행위과정을 유추하여 축조양상과 매장방식을 유추하였다. 즉 묘광 내 함몰토의 양상과 유물출토상태 등을 종합하면 묘광 내부에는 요갱 설치 후 목관을 안치하고 충전과 실토(實土)는 하지 않고 빈 공간으로 두었다. 이후 목관 및 망자 안치와 함께 목관 내부와 측부(묘광 바닥), 상부에 유물을 부장한 후 묘광은 목개로 덮고 봉분을 축조하였다. 따라서 요갱을 파서 묘광을 완성한 다음의 의례→ 목관의 안치 후 의례→ 목관 내부와 측부(묘광 바닥)에 유물부장 과정의 의례→ 목관 상부에 유물부장 과정의 의례→ 봉분 축조의 의례 순으로 매장행위가 이뤄졌을 가능성이다.
한편 백전․예산리 31호 목관묘는 다양한 칠기류, 금속류, 토기류, 석제품이 출토되었는데, 그 중 원통형칠기, 칠기두, 칠기완, 금동개궁모, 칠초철검, 검부속구, 호형대구 등으로 볼 때 영남지역 원삼국시대 목관묘 중에서도 1부류에 해당하여 당시 그 위상을 대변한다. 따라서 목관묘의 위계에 따라 의례과정이 간소화되거나 복잡화가 결정되는데, 상차림 또한 매장행위에서 중요한 기물 중 하나로 고려해야 한다.

영어초록

This passage discussed the Baekjeon and Yesan-ri wooden gasket tombs from the Three Kingdoms Period of Yuan in Seongju, Yeongnam region from two main perspectives. In particular, it mainly focused on the structure of wooden gasket tombs and the layers of burial goods through the ritual processes.
First, the structure of wooden gasket tombs in the Yeongnam region consists of ① burial pit (grave pit), ② wooden gasket, ③ backfill soil, ④ actual soil, and ⑤ mound soil (earth mound). In connection with this, the characteristics were discussed concerning the Baekjeon and Yesan-ri tombs. Specifically, while the structure of the Baekjeon and Yesan-ri wooden chamber tombs does not significantly differ from those in the Yeongnam region, there were some examples without backfill, indicating structural uniqueness.
Second, after reviewing the construction patterns of wooden gasket tombs in the Yeongnam region, the burial method was inferred focusing on Tomb No. 31 in the Baekjeon and Yesan-ri sites. Based on the condition of the burial pit soil and the state of artifact excavation, it was deduced that after installing the burial pit, the wooden chamber was placed inside without backfilling or adding mound soil, leaving it as an empty space. After placing the deceased and wooden gasket, artifacts were placed inside the wooden gasket and around its sides (the floor of the burial pit), and on the upper part of the wooden chamber. Then, the burial pit was covered with mound soil to construct a mound. Therefore, the burial process likely followed the sequence: ritual of excavating the burial pit and completing the burial pit → placing the wooden gasket and conducting rituals → ritual of placing artifacts inside the wooden gasket and around its sides (the floor of the burial pit) → ritual of placing artifacts on the upper part of the wooden gasket → ritual of constructing the mound.
Meanwhile, Tomb No. 31 in the Baekjeon and Yesan-ri sites contained a diverse array of artifacts, including lacquerware, metals, earthenware, and stonework Considering the cylindrical lacquerware, lacquered heads, lacquered bowls, bronze ornaments, iron swords with inlaid designs, sword fittings, and dagger-shaped ornaments, it represents a top-tier category among the wooden gasket tombs of the Three Kingdoms Period in the Yeongnam region, representing the social status and significance of that era. Therefore, the ritual processes are determined to be simplified or complex based on the hierarchy of the wooden gasket tombs.
