초록

퇴계학은 ‘정情’의 문제를 다루고 있다는 점에서 그것은 미학과 통하며, 퇴계 ‘이발기수’의 서예미학적 특징은 ‘위기지학爲己之學’을 지향하는 실천적인 인간가치의 예술이다. 이러한 점은 퇴계 ‘이발기수’의 논리구조에서 이理[도道]가 예술에 의미 있는 정신성을 주었다면, ‘기발이승’의 예술은 오히려 이理[도道]에 형상形象과 그 생명성을 부여하였다고 말할 수 있다.
퇴계가 강조한 ‘이발기수’의 서예정신은 바로 직심直心, 직립直立, 직필直筆, 직서直書이다. 여기서 ‘직直’은 ‘정正’과 통하며 서예작품을 창작할 때 중봉의 운필과도 관련이 있다. 그것은 바로 ‘이발기수理發氣隨’에 기초한 ‘기발이승氣發理乘’의 서예창작방법이다. 서예는 하나의 기예에 불과하지만 그것은 오히려 인생경계, 도덕경계, 예술경계를 투사할 수 있다. 퇴계가 주장한 ‘이발기수’는 심성을 수양하여 맑은 기운의 품격이 넘쳐 흘러나오도록 하는데 있다. 그것은 심신수양과 함께 서예생명의 의미를 드러나게 하는 것이다. 따라서 퇴계가 주장한 ‘이발기수’의 서예미학적 사명감은 바로 여기에 있다.
본고는 퇴계가 거경궁리居敬窮理라는 도학자적 입장에서 모든 미는 ‘이발기수’의 ‘낙樂’이고, 서예정신으로 말한다면 그것은 천리가 유행하는 쇄락灑落한 기상의 담화적淡和的 서예임을 고찰하였다.

영어초록

A study of Toegye is related to the aesthetics in terms that it deals with the issue of the emotion, and one of the calligraphic aesthetic features of Toegye’s ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’ is the practical art which emphasizes human values and pursues ‘Wèijǐzhīxué(爲己之學, learning for self-improvement)’. If the principle[the Way] provided a meaningful spirituality to the art in the logical structure of Toegye’s ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’, we could say that the art of ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’ rather provided the form and the life to the principle[the Way].
The calligraphic spirits of ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’ which Toegye emphasizes are a straight mind, a straight standing, a straight brush, and a straight handwriting. In here, ‘Straight’ is close to ‘Rightness’ and related to the wielding the brush of Zhōngfēng(中鋒, to make the brush centered) in creating a calligraphic artwork. It is the very method of creating a calligraphic artwork based on ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’. Although calligraphy is nothing but an art, it can rather project the boundaries of life, ethic, and art. ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’ that Toegye insists is to overflow with the dignity of a clear energy by cultivating mind. It exposes the meaning of life in calligraphy with the cultivation of mind and body. Therefore, it is the calligraphic aesthetic sense of duty of Toegye’s ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’.
This study insisted that a beauty was represented by the pure and harmonious calligraphy of a free and easy energy in terms of the calligraphic spirit as Toegye insisted that a beauty is the very ‘Lè(樂, delight)’ of ‘Lǐfāqìsuí(理發氣隨, the principle issues and the material forces follow)’ from the point of view as a moralist of ‘Jūjìngqiónglǐ(居敬窮理, to reserve the reverence and pursue the principle)’.
