송국리유적의 시기와 성격, 그 학술적 가치 (Periodization, Characteristics and Academic Significance of the Songguk-ri Site)

초록

본고는 송국리유적의 시기와 성격 및 그 학술적 의미를 다시 한 번 생각하기 위하여 작성되었다. 먼저 최신 발굴 조사 성과를 바탕으로 유적의 시기와 성격을 살펴본 결과, 최초 대지 조성과 함께 방형계 주거 집단의 점유가 시작된 이후 원형계 집단이 등장하면서 대지 조성면을 목주열이 자리하는공간으로 활용하였으나, 기존의 주거형을 일부 인정하여 양자를 모두 축조하였을 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 과정에서 점유 기간의 공백은 없었으며, 전체 기간도 짧지 않았을 가능성이 높다. 한편, 송국리유적에서는 유력자 또는 유력 집단의 존재가 상정되는데, 그들은 대규모 노동력 동원, 식량 조달 및분배에 대한 적극적 개입, 제사권 장악 등을 통해 지배력을 강화하였을 것이다. 일반 주민들도 어느정도 안정적인 삶을 유지하여 인구가 점차 증가하였으며, 이와 같은 내부적 안정을 바탕으로 주변 유적들과 다양한 관계를 맺으면서 그 정점에 위치하는 중심 취락으로 성장하였음이 짐작된다.
다음 송국리유적의 학술적 의미와 가치에 대해서는 크게 세 가지 범주로 나누어 설명하였다. 첫 번째로 송국리유적의 발굴 및 보고는 송국리유형과 송국리문화를 설정케 한 기초 자료의 최초 제공이라는 측면에서 학사적으로 의미가 크다. 하지만 최초만을 지나치게 강조하기보다는 다른 유적에서 찾아볼 수 없는 유일무이한 특성을 더욱 부각시키는 편이 바람직하다. 다음 두 번째로는 완전한 형태를 갖춘 대단위 취락으로서의 자료적 가치를 들 수 있다. 송국리유적은 점유 기간이 청동기시대 중기라는시간 범위를 벗어나지 않기 때문에, 특정 시기의 취락 구성 원리나 해당 기간 내에서의 변화 과정을살피는 데에 양호한 자료를 제공한다. 마지막 세 번째는 조사할 부분이 많이 남아있다는 측면에서의학술적 발전 가능성에서 그 가치를 찾을 수 있다. 조사 기법의 발전과 더불어 앞으로 훨씬 더 다양하고 많은 정보가 획득될 것이 분명한데, 이것이 다른 유적과 비교할 수 없는 송국리유적의 가장 큰 학술적 가치라고 생각한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to reevaluate the periodization and characteristics of the Songguk-ri site and its academic significance. First, as a result of examining the time scale and characteristics of the site based on the latest excavations and research results, it is revealed that the settlements were initiated by the square-type house group followed the clearance of the terrace, then round-type house group appeared which used the space for the raw of wood pillars with a partial overlapping period. There was no gap in the occupancy period, and the duration of the site was not short. On the other hand, the presence of influential persons or groups in Songguk-ri is presumed to have reinforced their dominance through controlling large-scale labour force, active intervention in procurement and distribution of food resources, and ritual rights. It is presumed that the general residents also maintained a stable life to some extent, and the population gradually increased. Based on this internal stability, it had grown into a core settlement establishing various relationships with the surrounding villages.
In addition, the academic significance and value of the Songguk-ri site were considered and divided into three categories. First, the excavation and reporting of the Songguk-ri site are of great academic significance because it was the first provision of the basic data that established the Songguk-ri assemblage and Songguk-ri culture. However, rather than overemphasizing only the first, it is desirable to highlight the unique characteristics that cannot be found in other sites. Second, there is a data value as a large-scale settlement with a complete form. Since the Songguk-ri site is in the middle of the Bronze Age, its occupied period does not exceed the time span of the Bronze Age, so it provides good data for examining the principle of settlement formation in a specific period and its changing process. Third, the value can be found in the possibility of academic development in the aspect that there are many areas to be further investigated. With the development of analytical techniques, it is obvious that much more information will be obtained in the future, which the author thinks is the greatest academic value of the Songguk-ri site, uncomparable to others.
