The objective of this study was to analyze lawsuits between Koreans and Chinese, which have been rarely covered in research on the Chinese modern history of diplomacy and the history of Korea‐China relationship, focusing on the case of the dismantlement of Korean residents’ houses from the Samrichae Chinese settlement in Incheon. This issue was raised in 1891 when Chinese Wu Ri‐tang (吳禮堂) filed a lawsuit against Koreans living in his land within the Samrichae Chinese settlement in Incheon, but with the change of the Korea‐China relationship after the Sino‐Japanese War such legal disputes were expanded to other areas such as Jeongdong, Sachon and Yongdong in the settlement and settled at the end of 1899. This is an appropriate case for understanding diplomatic negotiations between Korea and China before and after the Sino‐Japanese War and examining Korean people’s perception of and reaction to Chinese settlements and the positions of the Korean government and other powers about the settlements.
In this study, we reviewed how the Samrichae Chinese settlement had been established and examined Wu Ri‐tang’s case before the Sino‐Japanese War. Then, we analyzed the process that the dispute over the dismantlement of Korean residents’ houses had been expanded to the Jeongdong, Sachon and Yongdong areas in the Samrichae Chinese settlement. Lastly, we traced the situation that this case was developed into a controversy over the legitimacy of the Samrichae Chinese settlement.
