고려시대 세한삼우도의 상징과 양식 고찰 -太祖 王建陵 벽화와 海涯 題 <세한삼우도>를 중심으로- (A Study on Style and Symbol of The Three Friends of Winter in the Goryo Dynasty -Based on Taejo Wang Geon's Tomb Murals and Hae-ae's The Three Friends of Winter-)

초록

본 논문은 고려 전반기 王建陵에 그려진 현존하는 우리나라 최초의 <세한삼우도>와 고려 말기 화폭에 그려진 海涯가 題한 <세한삼우도>의 상징과 양식을 고찰한 연구이다. 이 두 작품은 현존작이 희귀한 고려시대회화 연구에 있어서 소중한 자료이며, 세한삼우를 주제로 한 회화가 당시 중국에서도 드물어 연구가치가 크다.
왕건릉의 세한삼우도는 고분벽화라는 특화된 공간에 표현되어 있지만 주제나 스케일, 표현기법에서 독보적인 가치를 지닌다. 특히 왕건릉의 벽화를 고찰한 결과 고구려의 전통을 이으면서 10-14세기 요, 송, 금, 원대의 고분벽화의 영향을 받아 새로운 경향의 독자적인 벽화양식을 발현해 내었음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 왕건릉 벽화는 세한삼우 도상이 文人畵로 일반화되기 전에 장의예술로 등장한 벽화며, 기년작이기 때문에 고려 전반기 왕실의 미의식과 문인화의 면모를 보여주는 기준작이라고 할 수 있다.
고려는 유교를 정치·사회적으로 활용했으며, 송·원과의 상호교류를 통해 유교 서적을 수입했는데, 이러한 환경을 바탕으로 고려의 문인들은 문인화에 대한 인식을 갖고 애호하게 되었고 시와 그림의 주체자가 되었다.
세한삼우도의 소나무 구성이 雙松을 모티브로 한 ‘歲寒’의 주제임에 착안하여, 쌍송과 梅竹, 竹石 등의 조합을 살펴보았다. 즉 元代 후기의 작품과 고려 회화, 서체와의 비교분석을 통해, 세한삼우도의 도상이 쌍송도를 기본으로 하고 梅竹이나 竹石 등의 소재가 가미되어, ‘곤경의 극복을 혼자보다 사람과 ‘더불어’ 하는 것(同人)’과, ‘덕이 있으면 따르는 사람이 있으므로 외롭지 않다(德不孤, 必有隣)’라는 유교적 덕목을 보다 강화시킨 작품으로 해석해 보았다.

영어초록

The Three Friends of Winter(歲寒三友) found in Wang Geon's Tomb(王建陵), which was built in the early Goryo Dynasty, is the oldest Three Friends of Winter extant in South Korea. Hae-ae's Three Friends of Winter is the first work drawn on a canvas in the late Goryo Dynasty.
Although the Three Friends of Winter in Wang Geon's Tomb was expressed in a special space as a tomb mural(古墳壁畵), it has matchless values in the aspect of theme, scale, and expressional techniques. Especially, our comparative analysis with other tomb murals, built in the Liao, the Jin, the Song, and the Yuan dynasty during 10-14 centuries, supports that the Three Friends of Winter in Wang Geon's Tomb created an originative style by inheriting the traditional style from Goguryeo kingdom and converging various styles of tomb murals in Northeast Asia.
The Three Friends of Winter in Wang Geon's Tomb is also known as the first mural to antecedently express an artistic style as funerary art before being generalized in a literati painting. The mural of Wang Geon's Tomb built in 943(1276還葬, 修復) is considered as a standard artwork to reflect the aesthetic sense of the Goryo Dynasty and the true feature of a literati painting.
While the Three Friends of Winter in Wang Geon's Tomb represents Royal art of the early Goryo Dynasty, Hae-ae's(海涯) Three Friends of Winter possessed by Japanese Myoman-ji is a masterpiece to represent literati paintings in the late Goryo Dynasty. Based on Confucianism to dominate the political and social ideology of the Goryo Dynasty, literary persons were attracted by literati paintings shown in books imported from the Song and the Yuan dynasty and became artists in poetry and painting.
This study analyzed combinational expressions of twin pines(雙松), a plum tree and a bamboo, and a bamboo and stone in Hae-ae's Three Friends of Winter focusing on that its theme is a winter season motivated by twin pines. Specifically, through a comparative analysis with artworks of the Yuan dynasty, paintings of the Goryo Dynasty, and handwriting, this study proposes a novel interpretation of the artwork in the highlighted expression of Deokbugo (德不孤) and Pilyulin (必有隣) which mean overcoming of troubles by not oneself but company and no loneliness of the virtuous because of their followers, respectively.
