초록

본 연구는 백제 쌍릉 능원의 수학적･기하학적 설계 특징과 그러한 설계의 이면에 담긴 의도를 정밀한 수치 분석과 GIS 기술을 활용하여 탐구한다. 쌍릉 능원은 기존의 백제 왕릉과는 구별되는 입지와 구조를 보이는데, 특히 '2'라는 숫자의 중요성이 두드러진다. 석실의 현실에서 대왕릉은 소왕릉보다 '2척'씩 큰 규모로 설계되어 '2배'의 체적 차이를 보이며, 봉분의 직경 또한 대왕릉이 소왕릉의 '2배'에 달한다.
능원의 배치는 남쪽의 석왕동 건물지, 대왕릉, 소왕릉이 정사각형과 직각삼각형의 형태로 기하학적 규칙성을 이루도록 설계되었다. 특히 석왕동 유적의 건물지를 기준으로 볼 때, 소왕릉은 약 30도, 대왕릉은 약 15도의 각도로 배치되었으며, 대왕릉까지의 거리는 소왕릉의 2배가 되도록 설계되었다. 흥미로운 점은 봉분 직경이 2배 더 큰 대왕릉이 2배 더 멀리 배치됨으로써, 참배자의 시점에서는 두 능묘가 좌우 대칭을 이루며 동일한 크기로 인식되도록 설계되었다는 것이다. 더욱이, 건물지 바닥으로부터 당시 성인 남성의 시선 높이에서 바라볼 때, 두 능묘의 원봉분이 동일한 수직 시야각을 형성하여, 참배자는 두 능묘의 크기와 높이가 균형을 이루는 좌우 대칭적인 시각적 경험을 하게 된다.
특히 이러한 시각적 균형은 단순한 형태적･기하학적 대칭이 아니라, 거리, 크기, 각도･상대높이의 복합적인 비례관계를 통해 구현된 정교한 수학적 대칭성을 보인다는 점에서도 주목된다.
이러한 정교한 수학적 구조는 왕과 왕비의 권위 차이와 부부로서의 동등성이라는 상반된 개념을 시각적으로 구현하고자 한 능원 설계자들의 창조적 기획 능력을 보여준다. 요컨대 쌍릉 능원은 수학과 기하학적 지식을 활용하여 위계와 평등이라는 대립적 관념을 참배자의 시각적 경험 속에서 통합해낸 공간인 것이다. 나아가 이러한 공간적 구성은 단순한 시각적 균형을 넘어, 참배자의 동선과 체험을 통해 왕실의 위계와 조화를 감각적으로 체현하고 내면화하는 장소로 기능했을 가능성이 있다.

This study investigates the mathematical and geometric design features of the Baekje Ssangneung Royal Tomb Complex and the intentions behind such designs through precise numerical analysis and GIS technology. The complex exhibits distinct location and structural characteristics compared to other Baekje royal tombs, with particular emphasis on the significance of the number '2'. In the main chamber of the burial chamber, the Great Tomb was designed to be '2 chuk' larger than the Small Tomb in all dimensions, resulting in a volume twice that of the Small Tomb. Similarly, the diameter of the Great Tomb's mound is twice that of the Small Tomb, although both mounds were designed to have identical heights.
The spatial arrangement of the complex was designed to create geometric regularity through squares and right triangles formed by the Seokwang-dong building site to the south, the Great Tomb, and the Small Tomb. Notably, when viewed from the building site, the Small Tomb was positioned at approximately 30 degrees and the Great Tomb at approximately 15 degrees, with the distance to the Great Tomb being adjusted to twice that of the Small Tomb. Intriguingly, while the Great Tomb's mound diameter is twice as large, its placement at twice the distance ensures that from the worshipper's viewpoint, both tombs appear symmetrical and of equal size. Furthermore, when viewed from the eye level of an adult male of that period at the building site, the original mounds of both tombs create identical vertical viewing angles, allowing worshippers to perceive both tombs as balanced in size and height, creating a symmetrical visual experience.
This visual balance is particularly noteworthy as it demonstrates sophisticated mathematical symmetry achieved through complex proportional relationships of distance, size, angle, and relative height, instead of relying solely on formal or geometric symmetry.
This intricate mathematical structure reveals the tomb designers' creative planning abilities and their intention to visually manifest the abstract and contrasting concepts of hierarchical authority between king and queen and their equality as a married couple. In essence, the Ssangneung Royal Tomb Complex represents a space where mathematical and geometric knowledge was utilized to create a unified spatial expression of the opposing concepts of hierarchy and equality. Furthermore, this spatial configuration may have functioned as a medium through which the successors, officials, and visitors could physically and sensorially internalize the order and harmony of the royal family.
