무령왕릉에 구현된 도교적 세계관 (The Taoistic view of the world embodied in the Tomb of King Muryeong)

초록

본 논고에서는 무령왕릉에서 출토된 유물과 喪葬禮에 대한 분석을 통해 도교적 세계관이 어떻게 구현되고 있는지 알아보았다. 무령왕과 무령왕비의 지석에서 27개월의 殯葬이 확인된다. 이는 시신을 온존히 보존하여 영혼을 담을 수 있게 하고자 27개월 동안 殯殿을 만들어 살아있는 듯 예를 표한 것이다. 그런 점에서 중국 유교의 3년상을 도입하되, 백제적으로 변용한 것이며, 유교와 도교적인 상장례가 결합된 것이라고 할 수 있다.
무령왕의 지석은 이면의 방위능역도, 매지권과 동시에 작성된 것으로, 文券의 작성자는 도교에 능통한 술사 내지는 도사였다. 무령왕 지석의 ‘立志如左’ 다음의 형상이 모호한 글자는 도교의 符籙에 쓰이는, ‘尸’자로 시작되는 부호일 가능성이 높다. 매지권에서는 도교적 장례풍속의 영향이 강하게 드러난다. 매지권은 토지를 매각하는 주체, 즉 지하세계의 신들로부터 돈을 주고 매장지역을 사는 형식을 취했다. ‘不從律令’이라는 문구는 도교의 주문에 많이 쓰이는 ‘急急如律令’이라는 문구의 변용으로서 도교적 呪文으로 볼 수 있다. 방위능역도는 式盤이라는 점복 도구를 모방하여 묘역의 방위를 표시한 것이다. 신의 뜻에 맡긴다는 차원에서 식반이 원용된 것으로 보인다.
무령왕릉에서 출토된 유물 중에는 辟邪와 昇仙을 목적으로 한 것이 많다. 도교적 관념에서는 亡者의 영혼을 지옥에서 구출시키고, 천상세계로 올려보내며, 거기서 재생하여 不死의 세계로 가기를 바랐기 때문이다. 진묘수는 이마에 꽂힌 철제 뿔, 앞 다리 상단에 표현된 날개 등으로 보아 벽사의 기능만이 아니라, 死者의 昇仙을 돕는 역할을 했던 것으로 생각된다.
거울은 칼과 함께 도교에서 사악한 귀신을 물리치는 데 사용하는 벽사･주술적 기능을 가진 神物이었다. 무령왕릉에서 출토된 3점의 동경 중 方格規矩神獸文鏡은 신선사상을 반영하는 명문과 死者의 내세로의 여행길을 안내하는 TLV 형의 특징적인 도안을 가지고 있다. 이들 동경은 악귀를 물리치는 기능과 함께 死者인 무령왕이 仙界로 무사히 도착하는 것을 도와주는 신성성과 위력을 갖춘 장치였다.
무령왕릉에서 도교적 색채를 띤 유물이 많이 출토되고, 상장례에서도 도교적 요소가 많이 보였던 것은 당시 백제인, 특히 백제 왕실의 도교에 대한 이해가 있었기 때문이다. 무령왕릉에는 유교･불교･도교적인 요소가 共存하고 있다는 점에서 백제의 사상 및 문화의 다양성이 드러난다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This paper investigated the Taoist world view in Baekje through the analysis of the relics found in the tomb of King Muryeong and his funeral ritual. Looking at the memorial stones of the King and Queen Muryeong, we can see the fact that there was a bin-jang(殯葬) for 27 months. The bin-jang, which buried a corpse in a motuary until the mourning finishes, was to keep the bodies intact and show the respect for them as they were alive. These facts indicate that Baekje imported 3 years mourning from Chinese Confucianism, and transformed the original style into the style of Baekje. As a result, the funeral rituals of Baekje had mixed style of Taoism and Confucianism.
The memorial stone of the King Muryeong was made together with the tomb direction figure of the rear side of it and the land purchase record. The authors of the memorial stones of the King and Queen Muryeong might be the Taoist ascetics who were familiar with the Taoism. The ambiguous letter appeared at the end of the inscription of the King Muryeong's memorial stone might be the symbol of Taoism started with the letter ‘尸'.
The land purchase record strongly shows the influence of Taoist funeral ritual. The land purchase record has the form of land purchase contracts with the gods of the underworld. ‘不從律令(does not follow the Statute)' is the phrase that was written by replacing '急急如律令(like the enforcement under the Statue, quickly proceed)' which can be classified as the Taoist incantation. Tomb direction figure was mimicked after the divination tool like compass(式盤) and showed the direction of Tomb area, which meant the acceptance of God's power.
Among the artifacts excavated from the tomb, there are a lot of symbols of evil avoidance and ascension. Taoist wanted rescue the souls of the dead from the hell, and sent them to the heavenly world, where they revived and acquired the immortal life. Guard animal in the tomb of King Muryeong had steel horns on the forehead and wings on the front legs. These facts might mean that tomb guard animals had the role of evil avoidance and ascension of the dead.
Among the Taoists, mirror and knife were the tools for defeating the ghost following the will of heaven. Among the 3 bronze mirrors, section detail mirror decorated with mystic animals[方格規矩神獸文鏡] has the letters that reflects the ideas of Taoist hermit and the TLV type characteristic pattern of guiding the dead to the afterlife. From these facts, I can conclude that the mirrors excavated from the tomb of King Muryeong have the ability to defeat the ghost and guide the king to the heavenly world with the divinity and power.
Taoist relics from the tomb of King Muryeong and the Taoist funeral ritual means that people in Baekje, especially the royal family of Baekje, had the deep understanding of Taoism. The mixed elements of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism that can be found in the relics from the King Muryeong's tomb shows the diversity of the philosophy and culture of Baekje.
