고려시대 귀족층의 사망률과 기대여명의 추세; 비교사적 관점을 중심으로 (The Trend of Mortality and Life Expectancy of the Nobility in Koryŏ from Comparative Perspective)

초록

The goal of this article is to examine the population behaviors of the nobility in Koryŏ, focused on computing mortality and life expectancy and in comparison with the other countries' cases. The object of the analysis is a memorial inscription of the nobility in Koryŏ. They had mainly lived in around Gaeseong (the capital city of Koryŏ dynasty) for around tenth- to fourteenth-century. Based on Hollingsworth's consideration, I made a 200-year-cohort for investigating fluctuation of mortality and life expectancy. Based on year at birth, each cohort group is: around tenth-to twelfth-century cohort and thirteenth-to fourteenth-century cohort.
In result, the characteristic of the nobility in Koryŏ shows one of stable population; the mortality and life expectancy of the nobility had maintained the similar pattern without any meaningful fluctuation for a given period. And the figures of mortality and life expectancy was the highest in comparison with Chinese Wang clan and the British peer at the same period as well as the Andong Kwŏn clan Sijun pa. And Life expectancy level of the nobility in Koryŏ falls into Eastern region level 8 in Coale and Demeny’s Regional Life Table. On the basis of the life table, I estimate the life expectancy at age 0; 34.8. It shows the highest level in pre-industrial Korea.
But, the results of the analysis this article attempted have a obvious limitation caused by biased data. And I cannot estimate the life expectancy at age 0 for ordinary people in Koryŏ. For that, we cannot help but wait new methodology to overcome problematic biased data.
