초록

秋齋 趙秀三(1762～1849)의 작품을 연구함에 있어 竹枝詞類의 파악과 분석은 매우 중요하다. 그는 명실상부 조선 후기의 걸출한 한시작가로서 그의 문학작품 대부분이 詩로 이루어져있으며 6차례에 걸친 연행의 경험도 일반적인 ‘연행록’의 형태가 아닌 ‘연행시’의 형태로 남아있다. 또한 본고에서 중심 텍스트로 다루고자 하는 竹枝詞에도 특장이 있어 「外夷竹枝詞」, 「海甸竹枝詞」, 「上元竹枝詞」 등과 같은 작품을 남겼으며 竹枝調 로 쓰여진 「高麗宮詞」를 남기기도 하였다.
추재가 이렇게 다수의 죽지사류를 남기게 된 배경은, 외적으로는 당시 문단의 흐름과도 연관이 있으며 내적으로는 추재 개인의 독특한 인생편력, 紀俗에 대한 酷好 등에서 찾아 볼 수 있다.
18, 19세기의 조선 사회가 역사적으로 큰 의미를 지니는 이유는 매우 다양하겠지만, 가장 우선적인 것을 들자면 바로 ‘지식 정보의 팽창과 기록’이라는 점에 있다. 17세기 중반부터 활발하게 보급된 세계지도와 지리서 등은 지식인들의 대외인식 변화에 큰 영향을 준다. 또한 燕行에 참여하는 인사들의 범주가 중인층까지 확대되면서 이들의 지식정보 향유와 매개, 산출은 이 시기의 文化地圖에 주목할 만한 足跡을 남겼다 해도 과언이 아니다. 필자가 그간 연구 대상으로 삼아왔던 추재 조수삼은 당시의 이러한 문화적 현상과 그 궤적을 함께한 인물이다.
추재의 竹枝詞, 특히 「外夷竹枝詞」로 대표되는 해외를 소재로 한 작품은 문화적 다양성을 역력히 담아내고자 한 것들이다. 때문에 이는 작자의 異文化를 대하는 관점, 접근 방식을 살피는데 있어 매우 유용한 자료가 된다.
추재는 연행이라는 직접 체험을 통해서 중국의 선진 문물을 목도했다. 傳聞했던 사실들을 눈으로 확인하는 순간이라 할 수 있는데, 그 처음으로 착목한 대상의 화려함과 기이함을 竹枝詞라는 한시 형식을 빌어 사실적이고도 정확하게 전달하려 했다. 이러한 경험은 본격적으로 바깥세상에 대한 호기심을 촉발시키는 계기가 된다. 때문에 그는 「방여승략」 외의 여러 지리서를 탐독하는 간접 체험으로 세상 밖(즉 중화 문명권 밖)을 경험하게 된다. 이러한 他者에 대한 관심의 총체를 詩化시켰고, 면밀하게 注를 다는 방식으로 대상에 대해 적극적인 접근 방식을 취했다. 즉 낯선 것을 익숙하게 만드는 통로로서 죽지사를 활용한 것으로 보인다. 타자를 향한 그의 시선에서, 자신의 주관적 감상 즉 華夷論에 입각하여 문화적 우열을 논한다든지 하는 주관적 감상은 극도로 자제하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이는 곧 선입견을 배제하자라는 의도로 보인다. 타자에 대한 그의 태도를 통해 그가 철저히 타자의 입장이 되어 문화의 다양성을 인정하는 ‘상대주의적 관점’을 지녔다라고 말하기에는 분명 이른 감이 있다. 기실, 20세기로 넘어가면서도 문명과 야만을 나누는 잣대는 그대로 존재하지 않았는가라는 물음에는 여전히 명징한 답을 찾지 못한다. 하지만 ‘海中諸夷’에서 보여지는 타자에 대한 접근방식과 시선은 분명 문화의 다양성을 인정하고 전달하려는 단초를 내포하고 있다.

영어초록

It is important to recognize and analyze several pieces of Bamboo-branch poems in the course of studying the works of Chujae Cho Susam, who, in fact, is a significant poet whose works, most of all, consist of poems. Especially, his experiences of six-time-journey to Peking was ordinarily embodied in the form of poems different from his contemporaries, who generally wrote their journey in the form of prose. His main capabilities as a outstanding poet lie in Bamboo-branch poems such as 「Oui jukjisa (Bamboo-branch poems of the barbarians)」, 「Haejun jukjisa (Bamboo-branch poems of the coastline)」, 「Sangwon jukjisa (Bamboo-branch poems of full moon day)」and 「Koryo Gungsa (Palace poems of Korea dynasty)」which, one of his major works dealing with Korean folklores and customs, is particularly written in Bamboo-branch-poem style.
Two things could be pointed out for understanding background of his writings of Bamboo-branch poems: externally, main stream of the literati of that time was newly concerned about Bamboo-branch poem as a genre, and internally, poet's life and his deep concern for folklores and customs.
And historically, we'd better consider changes of society in the eighteenth and nineteenth-century: first of all, there was a great expansion of knowledge/information. From the seventeenth-century wide spreads of world maps and geography books marked a big impact on the intelligentia on the recognition of other world, and journey to Peking of the bands of intellectuals brought a change even to the middle class clerics, whose share and reproduction of knowledge/information left a great traces on the cultural map of that time. It is Cho Susam who is a typical poet to take step by step with these kind of phenomenal shift.
「Oui jukjisa (Bamboo-branch poems of the barbarians)」, one of his masterpieces, which dealt with many foreign countries unknown at that time deserves to note and reread owing to its encompassing of cultural varieties. It could be a useful data and touchstone to know not only poet's viewpoint but also intellectual's approaches to other cultures.
To sum up the writing-process and values of his works of Bamboo-branch poems might be like these: he eyewitnessed the developed society of Qing China and was attracted by their beauties and specialties, and tried to described it realistically in the form of Bamboo-branch poem that, he would think, is best fit to transfer his intentions. It was just a first stage to provoke him to get curiosity about other world. Then, he read various geography books, for example, 「Bangyo sungryak (Excellent extracts of the world)」, and this reading of indirect experience was served to crystallize into poems and to add it, he annotated detailed notes on them, which could be interpreted as a evidence of positive approaches to the other. In brife, we could estimate that his attitudes to the other manage to escape from a trap either between the culture and the barbarians or superiority and inferiority. Actually, strict speaking, it is difficult to say and judge his viewpoint is a model of a cultural relativism accepting foreignness itself of the other. However, we could see and discover a clue that he concedes cultural varieties and tries to make a bridge to connect us with them.
