근대 조선인의 만주 체험 기록에 나타난 언어 인식과 표상 -기행문과 수필류를 중심으로- (Recognition and Representation of Languagein the Records of Joseon People’s Experiences in Manchuin Modern Times -Focusing on the travelogues and essays-)

초록

본고는 근대 조선인의 만주기행문 및 수필류에서 발견되는 언어 체험의 기록에 주목하였다. 이들 텍스트는 상당수가 신문이나 잡지에 발표된 것으로, 기획된 만주 담론과 필자들이 경험한 만주의 실상 및 감상이 교직된다. 특히 언어 체험은 다수의 글에서 인상 깊은 장면으로 묘사된다. 본고에서는 이들 기록에서 발견되는 만주 공간의 언어가 이국풍(異國風)과 제국의 역학을 비추는 거울이자, 오족협화(五族協和)의 땅으로 선전된 만주국의 허상을 드러내는 균열의 기제라는 점에 주목하였다.
만주 공간에서 위계화된 언어의 현실은 필자의 시각에 따라 다르게 해석되었다. 언어 현실로 반영된 제국의 역학을 수용하는 관점에서는, 일본어가 명실상부한 국제어로서 오족협화를 실현하는 수단이자 제국의 희망찬 전망을 보여주는 지표로 여겨졌으며, 타자화된 언어는 곧 정치 현실에서 타자화된 국가와 국민의 표상으로 인식되었다. 반면에, 모어(母語)를 자유롭게 사용할 수 없는 불통의 상황을 목도하거나 체험하는 과정에서는, 식민지 조선이 처한 현실이 자각되거나 부조리한 구조가 비판적으로 성찰되기도 하였다.
여행 중에 만난 조선인 동포나, 때로는 외국인의 목소리로 감각된 조선어는 식민지 조선과 조선인의 현실을 상기시키는 민족의 표상으로 해석될 수 있었다. 조선어의 지위는 미미하고 때로는 양지로 드러날 수 없는 것이었지만, 조선어는 기획된 만주 서사 이면의 개별 조선인의 삶을 포착하는 수단이자, 재만조선인이 투쟁으로 지켜내야만 하는 ‘민족’의 언어이자 ‘자신’의 언어였다.
조선인의 만주 체험 기록 속의 언어 현실은, 필자의 관점과 텍스트의 성격에 따라 재현되고 해석되며, 만주 공간의 역학 속의 균열과 불협의 단면을 드러내고 있었다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the records of language experiences found in modern Koreans’ Manchu travelogues and essays. Many of these texts have been published in newspapers and magazines, and the planned Manchu discourse is intertwined with the reality and appreciation of Manchu experienced by the authors. In particular, the language experience is described as an impressive scene in a number of texts. This paper notes that the language of Manchu space found in these writings is a mirror reflecting the dynamics of nations and the exotic atmosphere, as well as a mechanism of cracks that reveal the illusion of Manchukuo, which was promoted as the land of the Harmony of Five Nations.
The reality of language hierarchy in Manchu was interpreted differently according to the author's perspective. From the perspective of accepting the dynamics of the empire reflected in language reality, Japanese was regarded as a means of realizing the Harmony of Five Nations as an international language and indicator of the hopeful prospects of the empire, whereas the otherized language was recognized as a representation of otherized nations and people in political reality. However, in the process of witnessing or experiencing a lack of communication when the native language cannot be freely used, the reality faced by colonial Joseon was recognized and the absurd structure was critically reflected.
The Korean language, sensed through the voices of Korean compatriots or sometimes foreigners met during travel, could be interpreted as a representation of Joseon and Joseon people, reminding them of the colonial reality. Although the status of the Korean language was insignificant and sometimes it was even a hidden language which could not be used publicly, the Korean language was a means of capturing the lives of individual Koreans behind the planned Manchu narrative and a language of the people that Koreans living in Manchu had to protect with struggle.
As such, the language reality in the records of the Joseon people's experience in Manchu was reenacted and interpreted according to the author’s perspective and the discourse of the texts, showing cracks and disharmony in the dynamics of Manchu space.
