초록

본 논문은 진일재(眞一齋) 류숭조(柳崇祖)의 대학십잠 과 성리연원촬요 를 중심으로, 조선 전기 유학의 수양론이 지닌 실천적 성격과 그 철학적 구조를 고찰하였다. 류숭조는 성리학이 추상적 이념에 머무르지 않고, 군주를 비롯한 개인의 도덕 실천과 정치적 책임으로 연결되어야 한다는 문제의식을 바탕으로, 내면의 수양과 사회적 교화를 통합한 실천철학을 제시하였다.
대학십잠 은 대학 의 삼강령과 팔조목을 재구성하여, 마음의 본래적 밝음[明德]을 회복하고 수기치인(修己治人)의 이상을 실현하는 방법을 짧고 간명한 잠언(箴言) 형식으로 제시한 저술이다. 특히 마음의 수양을 강조하며, 도학적 이상이 정치와 윤리에 어떻게 실질적으로 구현될 수 있는지를 모색하였다. 성리연원촬요 는 성리학의 주요 논변을 뽑아서 구성한 책으로, 본연지성과 기질지성, 마음의 작용과 도덕 실천의 가능성에 대한 탐구를 통해 수양론의 이론적 기반을 정밀하게 드러낸다. 특히 류숭조는 기질의 차이를 도덕적 한계가 아닌 변화 가능한 조건이자 수양의 출발점으로 전환하고, 지속적인 마음공부를 통해 그것이 극복될 수 있음을 강조하였다.
대학십잠 과 성리연원촬요 는 실천과 이론의 양 축에서 류숭조의 도학적 이상을 구조화한 상호 보완적 수양론으로, 성리학이 개인의 기질과 현실 조건 속에서도 구현 가능한 도덕 철학임을 보여주는 사례라고 할 수 있다. 나아가 류숭조가 강조한 명명덕(明明德), 기질 변화의 가능성, 마음의 지속적 점검이라는 수양론의 요소들은 오늘날 도덕성과 인격 교육, 공적 윤리 회복을 위한 교육철학적 자산으로서의 의의 또한 지닌다.

영어초록

This article examines the practical dimension and philosophical structure of self-cultivation theory in early Joseon Neo-Confucianism, focusing on Ten Admonitions on the Great Learning and Essentials of the Sources of Neo-Confucianism by Jiniljae Ryu Seungjo. Ryu advocated a Neo-Confucianism that does not remain confined to abstract ideals, but is instead grounded in moral practice and political responsibility, particularly for the ruler and other members of the sociopolitical order. His philosophy integrates inner moral cultivation with social transformation, presenting a coherent model of practical moral thought.
The Ten Admonitions on the Great Learning reorganizes the “Three Guiding Principles” and “Eight Steps” of the Great Learning into ten concise moral maxims. This work provides concrete methods for manifesting one’s bright virtue and realizing the Confucian ideal of cultivating oneself and governing others. Emphasizing the centrality of mind cultivation, it explores how Neo-Confucian ideals may be embodied in political and ethical life.
The Essentials of the Sources of Neo-Confucianism compiles core arguments in the Zhu Xi tradition of Neo-Confucianism, laying out the theoretical foundations of self-cultivation through detailed analysis of original nature and the nature of temperament, the operations of the mind, and the conditions for moral transformation. Ryu interprets differences in temperament not as fixed moral limitations but as transformable conditions and necessary starting points for the path of cultivation. He underscores the role of continuous self-reflection and disciplined effort in overcoming such dispositions.
Together, these two texts constitute a complementary system of cultivation that expresses Ryu Seungjo’s Neo-Confucian ideal as both philosophically rigorous and practically realizable within the constraints of individual temperament and historical context. His emphasis on manifesting bright virtue, the malleability of temperament, and ongoing moral vigilance offers valuable insight into contemporary discussions of moral education, character formation, and the philosophical foundations of public ethics.
