초록

본 논문은 조선왕실의 의례음악을 위해 사용되었던 비파류(琵琶類) 악기인 향비파(鄕琵琶) · 당비파(唐琵琶) · 월금(月琴)을 실록(實錄) · 오례서(五禮書) · 악서(樂書) · 의궤(儀軌) · 고악보(古樂譜) · 문집(文集) 등의 기록을 통해 통시적 · 공시적으로 조명한 논문이다.
비파는 손가락이나 연주도구로 뜯거나 튕겨서 소리를 내는 발현악기(撥絃樂器)로 서역(西域)에서 건너온 것으로 여겨지며, 우리나라에서는 삼국시대부터 연주된 것으로 보인다. 비파가 우리나라에 전래된 이후 궁중과 민간에서 활발한 연주활동이 있었음을 여러 문헌에서 확인할 수 있으나, 조선후기를 지나 일제강점기를 거치면서 점차 그 모습을 찾아보기 힘들어졌다.
그간 복원사업과 함께 비파에 대한 사적 연구, 연주법 및 조현법 연구, 악보연구, 악기의 형태와 재료에 관한 연구 등이 이루어졌으나, 아직까지 다른 악기에 비하여 진행된 연구가 매우 적고, 특히 우리나라에서 비파의 전승부터 단절까지의 역사를 밝혀내어 체계적으로 정리한 논문이 없어 아직도 비파에 관련된 연구는 매우 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본고에서는 조선시대 왕실의례에서 사용된 비파류 악기에 대해 살펴봄으로써 우리나라 역사 속에서 비파의 의미를 재조명해보고자 하였다.
조선왕실의 각종 행사는 오례(五禮) 즉 길례(吉禮) · 가례(嘉禮) · 빈례(賓禮) · 군례(軍禮) · 흉례(凶禮) 중 하나로 거행하였다. 조선전기 왕실의례에서 사용된 비파류의 악기는 오례서와 악서를 통해 자세히 드러난다. 시기 · 의례 별로 사용되는 악기의 종류에 차이가 있으나, 이들 비파류의 악기가 길례 · 가례 · 빈례 · 군례의 의식에 모두 포함되었다. 흉례의 경우에는 앞 시대와 같이 진설은 했지만 연주는 하지 않았다. 또한 명기악기로서 사용된 비파의 모습도 볼 수 있다.
조선후기 왕실의례의 비파류 악기는 정조(正祖: 1776~1800)대의 오례서 『춘관통고』(春官通考)와 함께 각종 의궤를 통해 살펴본다. 이는 국가전례에 포함된 비파류의 악기와 더불어 실제 의례에서 비파류 악기의 쓰임을 살펴보는데 도움이 된다. 나아가 의궤에는 특정 목적을 위해 제작한 악기의 수 · 재료 · 치수 등 또한 상세히 기록되어 있어 비파류 악기의 제작 전통까지 짐작케 한다.
이와 더불어 비파의 음악이 남아있는 고악보를 정리하고, 의궤와 문집 기록을 통해 비파를 연주한 음악인들의 활동양상을 살펴본다. 조선시대 장악원(掌樂院)에 속했던 악공(樂工)들의 연주와 음악 자체 이외에도 그들의 삶에서 비파의 의미 혹은 그 시대 비파 음악인의 지위 등을 아울러 고찰한다는 의미를 지닌다.

This study sheds light on the hyang pip'a 鄕琵琶 (lit. native Korean lute, i.e. five-stringed lute), tang pip'a 唐琵琶 (lute of Chinese origin, four-stringed lute), and wŏlgŭm 月琴 (moon lute), which are court musical instruments for the royal family used during the Chosŏn period, by investigating such old sources as the Chosŏn wangjo sillok 『朝鮮王朝實錄』 (Annals of the Chosŏn Dynasty), Oryesŏ 五禮書 (Books of Five Rites), Aksŏ 樂書 (Treatise on music), ŭigwe 儀軌 (official record of court events), koakpo 古樂譜 (historical music scores), munjip 文集 (collected writings) and others from both diachronic and synchronic standpoint.
The pip'a 琵琶 (short lute) is a kind of lute where players pluck or twang the strings by using their fingers or instrumental tools. It appears to have come from the countries bordering the western regions of Asia, and has been used since the Three Kingdoms period in Korea. The pip'a had been widely and vigorously used in both the royal court and civilian community since being introduced to Korea, as has been confirmed by various literatures. However, the transmission of Korean lutes has become gradually discontinued since the Japanese occupation of Korea.
Research on the pip'a is relatively rare compared to other Korean instruments, even though restoration works through multiple studies about the historical facts, techniques, accordatura, scores, shape, and the materials of it have been attempted. Particularly, there are currently no methodically reasoned reports about the history of its rise to its discontinuity. Therefore, in this study the value of the pip'a in Korean history is reviewed, observing the types of Korean lutes used in the royal court, especially in the Chosŏn Dynasty.
All types of the Chosŏn royal courts were held in accordance with one of the Five Rites — Killye 吉禮 (Auspicious Rites), Karye 嘉禮 (Congrtula- tory Rites), Pillye 賓禮 (Guest Rites), Kullye 軍禮 (Military Rites), and Hyungrye 凶禮 (Ominous Rites). The different types of the pip'a are present in the national Five Rites and musical books of the early Chosŏn period.
Korean lutes performance consists of Killye, Karye, Pillye, and Kullye, though there are differences among the types of instruments by periods or rituals. In the case of an Hyungrye, they were set out but not performed, and they were used as musical instruments for Burial.
In this work, Korean Lutes in the late Chosŏn period are dealt with Five Rites in the reign of King Chŏngjo 正祖 (1776-1800), on the basis of Ch'un‘gwan t'onggo 『春官通考』 (Comprehensive Study of the Rites Officials), and of many other ŭigwe 儀軌 (official record of court events). This consideration helps in researching the usage of Korean lutes as the national rites along with the actual rituals. Furthermore, the detailed record of the quantity, materials, and dimensions of instruments for special purposes in ŭigwe sheds light on even the production of the pip'a.
In addition to this, ancient scores with pip'a music and the pip'a players’ activity pattern through ŭigwe and other anthologies are also treated in this report. This approach guides us to not only focus on the performance and music itself, but also consider the comprehensive meaning of the pip'a in the player’s life and its influence in their social class.
