계곡 장유의 논설류 산문 연구 (A Study on Persuasive Style Proses of Kyekok Chang Yu)

초록

본고는 谿谷 張維의 論說類 산문을 검토하여 그 특징을 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 장유의 논설류 산문을 개관하고, 작품의 주제의식 및 그 구현 방식에 나타나는 특징적 양상을 세 가지 측면에서 논하였다.
장유의 논설류 작품은 권3 雜著에 수록된 辯 3편, 論 3편, 解 1편, 그리고 권4 說에 수록된 10편의 설까지 모두 18편이다. 이 중 두 편은 字號說로서 논설류로서의 성격이 미약하며, 「設孟莊論辯」 역시 작가의 견해가 제시되지 않은 가상의 대화로서 논설류로 보기에는 모호한 측면이 있다. 이 3편을 제외한 나머지 15편은 형식 및 내용의 측면에서 명백히 논설류 산문의 범주에 속한다.
장유 논설류 산문의 주제의식 및 그 구현 방식에는 다음과 같은 양상이 나타난다. 첫째, 인물에 대한 논평의 글에서 인물의 성격 및 그가 처한 상황을 고려하여 그 심리를 세세하게 분석해 나가는 방식이 활용되고 있다. 「漢祖不錄紀信論」이 그러한 작품인데, 같은 주제를 다룬 주세붕 및 어유봉의 작품과 비교할 때 이러한 특징이 더욱 두드러진다. 「靑白眼說」에서도 유사한 방식의 인물 분석이 나타난다. 둘째, 文의 불후한 가치에 대한 믿음이 확고히 표명되고 있다. 「柳宗元死而爲神論」에서는 천지의 精英한 기운이 文章에 깃들어 있는데 유종원은 間氣를 받아 그러한 재주를 지니게 되었으며, 그 때문에 죽어서 신이 될 수 있다고 하였다. 「詩能窮人辨」에서는 시인의 재주는 元精이 그 靈性을 부여한 것으로, 大化와 더불어 流通하는 것임을 역설하였다. 또, 「覆醬瓿解」에서는 군자와 達人은 비록 현실에서 곤궁함을 겪더라도 의연한 태도로 글을 남겨 道를 밝힐 뿐이라고 하였다. 셋째, 외물에 흔들리지 않는 초연한 자아에 대한 지향이 나타나고 있다. 「風竹說」에서는 感應無心하는 대나무의 형상을 통해 현실의 온갖 변화 앞에서 의연히 자신의 본모습을 지켜나가는 자아의 모습을 구체화하였다. 이 글에서는 성리학의 마음공부가 필요함을 강조했는데, 「福田說」에서는 불교적 깨달음을 통해 그러한 경지로 나아갈 수 있다고 하였다. 또한 「복전설」에는 齊物의 인식이, 「海鷗不下說」에는 逍遙遊의 경지가 나타난다. 외물의 구애를 받지 않는 독립적인 자아상은 장유 산문에 나타나는 주된 이상이며, 그에 이르는 방법은 성리학이기도, 불교이기도, 또 장자적 초탈이기도 한 것이다.
이상 제시한 몇 가지 양상은 장유 논설류 산문의 전체 특징을 모두 아우른 것은 아니다. 또한 이러한 특징들은 증서류나 서발류 등 장유의 다른 文類들과 연결 지어 논할 필요가 있다. 여러 한계가 있지만, 장유 산문 세계의 한 측면을 선명하게 읽어내는 데 본고의 논의가 작으나마 보탬이 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the persuasive style proses (論說類) of Kyekok (谿谷) Chang Yu (張維), with an aim to identify their traits. Chang Yu’s persuasive style proses will be first surveyed before proceeding to the discussion on three characteristic aspects visible in the subject matters of the writings, as well as the employed methods of expressions.
There are eighteen works in persuasive style proses by Chang Yu: three assessments (辯), three arguments (論), one explanation (解), and ten theories (說). Among those writings, two works do not show as strong character of persuasive style prose as others; and “An Assessment on the Hypothetical Argument between Mencius and Zhuang Zhou (設孟莊論辯)”, being an imaginary conversation which does not convey the author’s opinion, could be hardly distinguished as a persuasive style prose. Fifteen works, except these three works, overtly belong in the persuasive style prose category in terms of their format and their contents.
The subject matter and the modes of expressions in Chang Yu’s persuasive style proses reveal following key characteristics. First, commentary on a person carefully takes into consideration one’s personality and their circumstances when analyzing their psychology. An Argument on “Why Emperor Gaozu of Han Did Not Honor Ji Xin (漢祖不錄紀信論)” is one of such works; when compared with the thematically identical writings by Chu Sepung and Ŏ Yupong, this trait becomes more apparent. Similar method of profiling is also apparent in “A Theory on Blue and White Eyes (靑白眼說)”. Secondly, Chang Yu expresses his firm belief in the immortal value of literature (文) in his writings. In “The Argument that Liu Zongyuan Died and Became a Deity (柳宗元死而爲神論)”, he argues that the extraordinary energy of the heaven and earth is embodied within ‘the literature (文章)’, and that the talent and postmortem deification of Liu Zongyuan had been possible for he was bestowed with unprecedented energy (間氣). In “An Assessment on Whether Poetry Impoverishes a Man (詩能窮人辨)”, he claims that the talent of a poet is constituted by the spiritual energy bestowed by the spirit of heaven and earth, and that the poetic talent circulates alongside the force of universe (大化). Also, in “An Explanation on the Lid of a Pickle Jar (覆醬瓿解)”, he contends that in the face of adversity, a junzi (君子) or daren (達人) merely illuminates the Way (道) through unwavering writing. Thirdly, his writings feature a pursuit of a dispassionate ego, which remains unaffected by external objects. In “A Theory about Bamboo Swaying in the Wind (風竹說)”, the bamboo tree materializes the self which soberly preserves one’s true colors despite varied changes. This work also emphasizes the need for the Neo-confucian way of cultivating one’s mind. Yet, “A Theory on the Soil for Fortune (福田說)” argued that the advancement to such stage is possible through Buddhist enlightenment. Furthermore, A Theory on the Soil for Fortune features the notion of seeing all things equally (濟物), while “A Theory on the Seagull that did not Descend (海鷗不下說)” features the stage of Enjoyment in Untroubled Ease (逍遙遊). The self which is independent and irrespective of external objects is the main ideal featured in Chang Yu‘s proses; and the paths to the ideal take from in Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist transcendence.
The suggested traits do not completely encapsulate the characteristics of Chang Yu’s persuasive style proses. Also, these traits should be discussed in connection to the other writings ― such as farewells writings (贈序類) or prefaces and postscripts (序跋類) ― by Chang Yu. Despite the limitations, hopefully the findings presented in this study would be of help in scrutinizing an aspect of the Chang Yu’s writings.
