『芝峯類說』 소재 壬辰倭亂 기록에 대한 고찰 -筆記의 壬辰倭亂 기록물로서의 특성에 주목하여- (Aspects of Imjin War(壬辰倭亂) Records in 『Chibong Yuseol(芝峯類說)』 -Focusing on Characteristics of Pilgi as Imjin War Records-)

초록

본고는 李睟光이 저술한 筆記 『芝峯類說』에 담긴 임진왜란 관련 기록들을 고찰한 결과물이다. 이러한 고찰을 시도한 이유는, 필기인 『지봉유설』에는 임진왜란 기록물의 대부분을 차지하는 일기 자료에서는 발견하기 힘든 종류의 기록들이 다채롭게 수록되어 있기 때문이다. 필기는 일기 자료가 가지는 현장성과 즉시성은 없지만 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 수합한 다양한 견문과 정보를 종합하여 기록함으로써 일기 자료보다 넓은 시야를 가질 수 있는 장점이 존재한다. 본고에서는 필기의 이러한 특성에 주목하여 『지봉유설』에 수록된 임진왜란 관련 기록을 검토한 결과, 여타 임진왜란 관련 일기 자료에서는 발견하기 어려운 세 가지 종류의 기사를 발견할 수 있었다.
『지봉유설』에서는 임진왜란의 전체적인 경과를 요약한 기사와 전쟁의 승패 요인을 분석한 기사들을 발견할 수 있다. 이수광은 전쟁 초기 朝鮮의 연이은 패전의 요인을 훈련과 인력 확보 등 평소의 전쟁 대비가 미비했다는 점과 일본군이 鳥銃을 효과적으로 운용한 것에서 찾고 있다. 또 그는 일본군을 한반도에서 축출하는 데에는 明나라의 지원이 큰 역할을 한 것으로 기록하면서도 조선 장수들의 공로도 인정하고 있다. 이러한 전쟁의 전말에 대한 거시적인 조망과 승패 요인의 분석은 사건으로부터 시일이 지난 뒤 정보의 수합과 작자의 판단이 이루어진 뒤에 가능한 것으로, 개인의 경험에 의존해 즉각적으로 저술되는 일기 자료에서는 발견하기 어려운 종류의 기록이다.
『지봉유설』은 필기로서 임진왜란 속에서 후세에 전할 만한 행적을 드러낸 인물들에 대한 기록을 수록하고 있다. 이는 수시로 보고 들은 정보들이 집적되는 필기의 저술 방식에 의해 이루어진 기록이다. 이러한 기록들은 비록 단편적이고 『지봉유설』 군데군데에 흩어져 있지만, 영웅적인 활약을 보인 장수들, 순국하여 절의를 빛낸 의병들, 절개를 위해 목숨을 버린 열녀들, 전쟁 속에서 이익을 위해 일본군과 결탁한 배반자들, 자신에게 아무런 의무나 이익이 없음에도 이수광을 위해 헌신한 역노 연풍 등 임진왜란 속에서 드러난 다양한 인간상을 보여준다.
『지봉유설』에는 임진왜란이 휩쓸고 지나간 조선 사회에 남은 상흔도 기록되어 있다. 이수광은 전쟁 직후의 식량난과 그 해소 과정, 일본군의 폭력이 남긴 신체의 훼손 등 종전 후의 조선 사람들이 겪어야 했던 고초들이 기록되어 있다. 이러한 전쟁 후의 상흔에 대한 기록은 대체로 전쟁의 종결과 함께 끝을 맺는 일기 자료에서는 찾아보기 어렵다.
『지봉유설』은 임진왜란을 직접 경험한 중앙 관료인 이수광이 경험한 임진왜란의 면면이 기록되어 있는 필기이다. 중앙 관료라는 작자의 입장과 필기라는 저술 형태는 임진왜란 기록물로서는 매우 드문 사례이며, 특히 본고에서 고찰한 바와 같이 『지봉유설』은 임진왜란 기록물의 대부분을 차지하는 일기 자료에서는 찾아보기 어려운 종류의 기록들을 다양하게 담고 있다. 그런 점에서 『지봉유설』은 필기가 가지는 기록의 단편성과 파편성이라는 연구상의 난점이 있을지라도 임진왜란 연구를 위해 일고할 가치가 충분한 자료라고 할 것이다.

영어초록

This study examined the records of the Japanese Invasion of Korea (Imjin War) found in a pilgi(筆記) titled 『Chibong Yuseol』 written by Yi Su-kwang. The reason for such an attempt was because 『Chibong Yuseol』 contains diverse and rich records of the Imjin War, which are hardly seen on diary materials that take up most of the Imjin War records. Although pilgi lacks vividness and immediacy of other diary materials, it still has broader view than other diary materials by integrating experiences and information collected over a long period of time. This study focused on such characteristics of pilgi and examined the Imjin War-related records from 『Chibong Yuseol』, and found three types of articles that are hard to find in other diary materials that record about the Imjin War.
『Chibong Yuseol』 has articles that summarize the overall progress of the Imjin War and articles that analyze the factors for victory and defeat. Yi pointed out that Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty recorded series of defeats in the beginning of the war due to lack of war preparation, such as training and manpower, and effective utilization of matchlock by the Japanese army. Yi also recorded that the supports from Ming(明) Dynasty played an important role in expelling the Japanese army and recognized the contributions made by the generals of the Joseon Dynasty. The macroscopic view on the war details and analysis on victory and defeat were only possible by collecting information and making judgements after days from the event. So, such records are rarely found in the diary materials that were written immediately based on the personal experiences.
『Chibong Yuseol』 is a pilgi material, and it contains the records of human figures who made deeds worth transmitting to posterity during the Imjin War. These records are made by compiling the information seen and heard. Although these records are fragmentary and scattered throughout 『Chibong Yuseol』, they reveal the heroic deeds of the generals, righteous army leaders who died for the country and honor, faithful ladies(烈女) who sacrificed themselves for fidelity, traitors who colluded with the Japanese army to gain profit during the war, station servant(驛奴) Yeon-pung(年豐) who went through risks and hardship even without the sake of duty, and various other human characters seen during the Imjin War.
It also records the scars left on the war-swept Joseon society. Yi recorded the hardships that people of Joseon Dynasty went through in the postwar years, including food shortage and its solution process, and physical damages that the Japanese army left. Such records of scars are often neglected in the diary materials that usually finishes with the end of war.
『Chibong Yuseol』 is a pilgi that records the detailed aspects of the Imjin War that Yi directly experienced as a central official. Considering that there are relatively few records of Imjin written by the central officials and that most of Imjin War records are diary materials, 『Chibong Yuseol』 is a rare case that reflects diverse Imjin War records, which are difficult to find in diary materials that make up the majority of Imjin War records. Even though『Chibong Yuseol』 is a pilgi with fragmentary records, it is worth considerable for the studies on the Imjin War.
