초록

본 연구는 方志類 편찬을 중심으로 『한국고전총간』 지리류 편찬 방향을 논하였다. 방지란 각 지방의 지리지 즉 지역지리지를 가리키는 중국식 표현이다. 방지는 읍지로 대표되지만 이 외에도 변방지, 진영지, 촌동면지 등이 있고, 내용에 따라서는 기행일기(여행기)까지도 포함될 수 있다.
방지류 편찬 대상 선별에서는 서종의 분류가 필수적이다. 방지류는 한 지역의 객관적 사실들을 기록한 것이지만, 해당 지역에 접근하는 저작자의 지리 철학과 관점, 자연환경에 대한 인지 특성, 지역 정체성에 대한 지향성 등 한 지역의 비가시적, 주관적 이해 측면을 담아낸다. 따라서 방지류 편찬 대상을 선별함에 있어서는 내용의 풍부함이나 체제적 완성도에만 집착해서는 곤란하다.
방지류의 존재 이유는 ‘한 지역의 지속과 변천’을 보여준 다는 데 있다. 방지류 편찬 대상을 선별함에 있어서는 독자들로 하여금 국토 각 지역의 지리적 지속과 변천상을 한편으로는 공시적으로, 다른 편으로는 통시적으로 살필 수 있도록 해야 한다.
한편 국토의 지리정보를 기록한 측면에서는 관찬 읍지가 체제적 일관성과 내용의 지역간 비교 가치를 지니지만, 우리나라 지리사상사 측면에서는 사찬 읍지가 훨씬 중요할 수 있다. 따라서 방지류 고전적의 편찬 대상을 선별함에 있어서는, 적어도 사찬 읍지류에 관한, 서문이나 발문 내용, 주요 항목, 목차 구성 및 전개 등에 내포된 지리학적 특징과 의미를 검토하여 지리사상사적 가치와 전통지리학에서 차지하는 학술적 의미에 가중치를 두고 선별할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This study discussed the direction of compiling of 'geographies' classics of 『The Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections』, focusing on the 'regional geographies' or 'local geographies'(方志類). 'Regional geographies' classics are represented by Eupji(邑誌), but there are other sort of regional geographies such as those of border towns, camp towns, and settlements, and depending on the content, even a travel diary (travel diary) may be included.
In the selection of the subject for the compilation of regional geographies classics, the classification of 'type of book' is essential. Although the regional geographies records objective facts of a region, it contains aspects of invisible and subjective understanding of the region, such as the author's geographical philosophy and perspective, the cognitive characteristics of the natural environment, and the orientation toward regional identity. Therefore, in selecting the subject of the compilation of regional geographies classics, we have to pay attention to things other than the richness of the contents or the completeness of format.
The reason for the existence of the regional geographies is that it shows the continuation and change of a region. Therefore, in selecting the subject of the compilation of regional geographies calssics, we must keep in mind that the readers are able to examine the geographical continuity and change of each region of the country synchronously on the one hand and diachronically on the other side.
On the other hand, in terms of recording geographical information of our national territory, official-eupji(官撰邑誌) has systematic consistency and comparative value between regions, but private-eupji(私撰邑誌) may be much more important in terms of the history of Korean geographical thought. Therefore, in selecting the subject of compilation of the regional geographies classics, at least in relation to the private-eupj catogory, the geographical importances and meanings contained in the preface or introductory text, main items, and the composition and development of the table of contents are reviewed to determine the value of the books.
