초록

이 논문에서는 현재 개신교 구약 성경에서 연이어 나오는 사사기 19-21장과 룻기를 여성 등장인물을 중심으로 비교하였다. 첫 번째는 여성에 대한 서술방식을 통해 두 본문을 비교하였다. 서술방식에서는 여성의 이름과 여성의 목소리와 여성의 행동을 중심으로 비교하였다. 그 결과 사사기 19-21장에서는 여성의 이름도 없고, 여성의 목소리도 없고, 여성은 대부분 행동의 대상으로 서술되어 있다. 이것은 여성이 하나의 온전한 인격으로 여겨지지 않고 존재가 부정당하고 있다는 것과 여성들이 말할 수 없거나 여성의 말이 무시되는 억압적인 사회라는 것을 드러낸다. 그리고 여성이 자신의 인생의 주체가 되지 못하고, 스스로 결정하지 못하고, 남성들의 결정에 끌려 다니고, 희생당하는 사회라는 것을 드러낸다. 반면에 룻기는 여성이 이름과 자신의 목소리를 가지고 있으며 주체적으로 행동한다. 이것은 그녀들이 온전한 인격으로 존중받으며, 자신의 요구를 당당하게 말하고, 주체적으로 자신의 운명을 개척해 나가는 인물이란 것을 드러낸다.
두 번째는 환대와 헤세드와 하나님과의 관계라는 주제를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 사사기 19-21장에서 여성은 환대와 헤세드의 대상에서 제외되고 남성을 향한 환대와 헤세드를 위해 희생된다. 그리고 여성이 죽임당하고 희생당하는 상황 속에서 하나님은 등장하지 않는다. 반면 룻기에서는 모압 여성 룻도 이스라엘 안에서 정착할 수 있도록 환대를 받는다. 또한 강자인 보아스가 헤세드를 베풀고, 약자인 나오미와 룻이 헤세드를 받으며 서로 돕는 관계가 된다. 그리고 하나님께서는 그들의 헤세드에 더 큰 헤세드로 응답하셨다.
결론적으로 사사기 19-21장과 룻기는 여성 등장인물에 대해 대조적인 모습을 보인다. 그 원인은 그 사회와 하나님과의 관계에서 온다. 하나님의 뜻을 무시하는 공동체는 여성들에게 폭력적이다. 반면 하나님의 은혜가 넘치는 공동체는 여성들이 존중받는 곳이다. 그러므로 약자인 여성에 대한 태도가 바로 그 공동체의 신앙의 바로미터가 된다.

The essay compares Judges 19-21 and the Book of Ruth, books adjacent each other in the protestant Old Testament and the focus of the comparison is women characters. The first area of comparison is the ways to describe women characters. The comparison focuses on their names, speeches, and actions.
It turns out that all women in Judges 19-21 are not given names and voices and are described as objects of others’ actions. This indicates that they lived in an oppressive society where they were not considered as whole human beings, their existence was denied, they could not speak publicly and their views were ignored. It is also observed that women lived in a society where they could not be the subjects of their lives, could not make decisions for themselves, were subjected to men’s decisions, and were sacrificed without their consent. On the other hand, in the Book of Ruth, main characters are women and are given names. They are described as agents of their own life as they decide their own destiny and take bold actions. The way they are described in Ruth reveals that they were respected as whole human beings in the community as with confidence they expressed their needs and secured their future subjectively.
The second area of comparison focuses on the theme of hospitality, hesed and the relationship with God. In Judges 19-21, women are excluded from hospitality and hesed. Rather, they are sacrificed for hospitality and hesed for men. In a situation where a woman is killed and sacrificed, God does not appear. On the other hand, in the Book of Ruth, Ruth the Moabite is welcomed to settle in the land of Israel. In addition, Boaz, a strong man in the community shows hesed, and Naomi and Ruth, the weak experience hesed and support each other. And God responds with a greater hesed to their hesed.
In conclusion, Judges 19-21 and the Book of Ruth show a contrasting attitude toward women characters. The author of this essay suggests a reason for the different descriptions of women in the two texts: It has to do with the relationship between the community and God. Communities that ignore God's word tend to be violent against women. On the other hand, communities full of God's grace respect women. Therefore, attitudes towards women can be a barometer of the community's faith.
