새로운 소설의 성공과 풍자 형식의 실패 -이인직의 『혈의 루』와 『은세계』를 중심으로 (A study on serial novel and satirical novel in Lee In-Jik's literary works -focusing on 「Tears of Blood」 and 「the World of Silver」-)

초록

이 논문은 이인직의 대표적인 소설인 『혈의 루』와 『은세계』를 각각 연재소설이라는 형식과 풍자 기법에 주목해서 읽어보았다. 『혈의 루』에 대한 선행 연구들은 대개 이 소설이 장편 소설이기 이전에 신문 연재소설이었다는 당연한 사실을 주목하지 않았다. 당시 이인직 소설을 대면한 독자들에게 새로운 것은 『혈의 루』에 내장되어 있는 신문명에 대한 견해나 이것을 표현하는 부속국문체만이 아니었다. 매일매일 발표된 이야기들이 연결되어 장편 분량의 소설로 완성되는 과정 그 자체가 당시 독자들에게는 새로운 형식이었다. 그런데 이러한 새로운 특성은 연재소설의 작가가 이율배반적으로 보이는 이중의 제약을 무사히 완수할 때 비로소 성공적으로 드러날 수 있다. 일차적으로 연재소설의 작가는 매일 비슷한 분량의 서사를 발표해야 하는 부담을 안게 된다. 그런데 더 큰 문제는 단지 분량의 제약에 있지 않다. 일 회 서사 분량 안에서 하나의 이야기를 완결시키면서 동시에 다음 회 이야기에 대한 독자의 기대를 이끌어내야 하는 이율배반적인 특성에 바로 연재소설만이 지닌 새로움이 담겨 있다. 이른바 ‘연관 속 단절’의 실현 여부가 연재소설의 성공과 실패를 가름하는 기준이 된다. 이인직의 『혈의 루』는 독자와 등장인물 간의 정보량을 조절함으로써 연재소설의 ‘연관 속 단절’의 특징을 비교적 성공적으로 수행하고 있다. 심지어 이인직은 연재소설을 단행본으로 묶는 과정에서 많은 부분을 수정하고 있는데, 이는 이인직이 연재소설과 장편 소설의 미학적 특성을 다르게 이해하고 있음을 보여주는 증거이다. 그러나 소설의 새로운 기법과 장르에 대한 뚜렷한 미적 자의식을 지니고 있었던 이인직이지만 현실 세계에 대한 그의 인식은 문명과 야만의 이분법적 구도에서 벗어나지 못한 한계를 지닌다. 이는 이인직이 풍자라는 형식을 소설에 도입하여 사유를 전개시키는 『은세계』를 통해 증명된다. 풍자는 풍자 주체와 풍자 대상 사이에서 교묘한 균형을 이루어야 하며 심지어 완벽한 균형을 이룬 작품이라 하더라도 의도와 다르게 독자에게는 지적 쾌감만을 전달해 줄 수 있기에 문학적으로 실현하기 어려운 기법이다. 이인직의 『은세계』는 풍자 주체가 풍자 대상에서 벗어나 있다는 착각을 불러오게 하여 문학 비판의 복합적 시선을 잃고 있다. 한편 이러한 풍자 기법은 흥미롭게도 소설의 문장 차원에서도 시도되는데, 이인직 소설에서 빈번히 등장하는 대칭 구조의 복문은 아쉽게도 오로지 이분법적 판단을 실현하도록 만든 데 조력한다. 이처럼 『혈의 루』와 『은세계』를 꼼꼼히 읽는 과정을 통해 이인직 소설의 미적 새로움과 그 한계를 살펴보는 게 이 논문의 목표이다.

영어초록

This article is a trial for understanding serial novel and satirical novel in Lee In-Jik's literary works. Especially, this article analyzes his two novels 「Tears of Blood」 and 「the World of Silver」. There are two reasons why this article covers these texts. First of all, this writing departs from the simple fact that 「Tears of Blood」 is a serial story in newspaper. It is a well-known fact to every researcher of the korean literature, but this common sense makes everyone overlook this fact. Advanced researches usually analyzed 「Tears of Blood」 not as a serial novel but as a novel. Such researches knew the only difference between the two novels but they did not investigate the aesthetic value of that difference. The serial novel has a special function as compared with a novel. When novelist writes a serial story in newspaper, he finds himself in an antinomic situation. The story should be expressed each day in the limited section of newspaper but that finished story should be connected with the next story which will be published tomorrow. So serial novel has a lot of partial stories and each part has not only the self-sufficiency but also the connectivity. In other words, the success of serial novel while each story of the day is being published serially in a daily newspaper depends on its antinomic feature. Lee In-Jik excellently actualized these aesthetic antinomy by adjusting amount of information which lies between readers and characters. For example, readers well know all the situation more than characters can recognize in the uncivilized city(Pyongyang-story). On the contrary, readers and protagonist do not well know circumstances more than civilized people in the story can recognize in the civilized city(Japan-story, USA-story). Thus, controlling the amount of information gives the daily published story both completeness and expectation. Second reason for researching Lee In-Jik's literary works is in the fact that his aesthetic interest leads to a satirical attitude. However his satire did not keep the balance between the blamer and the blamed. It is the very weak point of satire that man who blames others easily misunderstands himself as innocent person. 「the World of Silver」 is the typical satirical novel of all Lee In-Jik's literary works, but it does not overcome the satirical defect. Such a weakness results from his dichotomous way of thinking. He looks upon the world as a dichotomy between civilized country and savage country. In 「the World of Silver」, he combines dichotomy with satire. Subject of satire is always on the side of the civilized country but object of satire is on the opposites side. This rule remains unchanged throughout the novel 「the World of Silver」. This study is written for such two reasons, and following conclusion can be accepted : Lee In-Jik succeeded in creating a new novel, but failed to find the balance point of satire. Hidden behind the success of 'New-style roman' is the failure of satirical novel.
